"Relics of the Lost Age" Post-Release Discussion Thread

Makes sense for RO’s. I always found rome interesting. Another question is could you disclose the current RO’s or would that be a bit too much?

And I will say while im not an expert in firearms I know a little bit about them. So if you are ever interested in implementing a more diverse set of firearms or firearm styles I’d love to help.

ROs in the current game: Esme, Abdul (or Esme and Abdul!), Cleo and Zhu . I can announce some of the ROs in the sequel, since this has been discussed already on the sequel WIP thread: Maria, The Amazonian, and a male character who you haven’t met yet. You also have the option to continue a relationship with your chosen RO from the first game. And thanks for the offer of gun expertise: one of the things that happens in the sequel is you get a chance to “upgrade” your firearm from your trusty old revolver, so I may well get back to you on that at some point!

Sounds good on the guns. And I thought so on the ROs but wasnt sure. So thank you.

I’m thoroughly enjoying my run through Relics! I’m pacing myself as I read it, so I can fully savor + think through the narrative. At this point in time I’m only halfway through the third chapter.

The prologues and chapters 1-2 have mostly been typo-free (I remember seeing maybe 1 or 2 typos, but they haven’t seriously detracted from my story immersion). However, in Chapter 3, I noticed the museum director’s last name keeps changing between Parker and Price?
I’m fairly certain this wasn’t a deliberate choice, so I just wanted to call attention to that!

Otherwise, the game is pretty great! Love the little Indy easter eggs especially. I don’t regret my $3.99!

Love the game and I love the setting. Honestly, I was pretty excited, since I played the one of the versions on forums. Congratulations on the release!

But I have a slight criticism and it’s only from my personal viewpoint. It just felt a little bit off with how many characters weren’t “traditional” (might not be the best word to use but English isn’t my first language). It felt forced in a way, maybe its because I’m not used to it in media, in general. But it took my out of the world, it felt fake. Starting in England. But if that’s the authors vision for the characters, I’m completely fine with that.

But hey, still loved the game and keep them coming.

Can anyone tell me the solution to the clock puzzle in ch 5

I agree with you on that. The presence of Sam and them being able to walk around in public as a non-binary felt immersive-breaking for the setting. Academics recognizing their binary nature is understandable, but goverment heads and others? Too unrealistic for me.

I would like to point out the use of Hindu holy word swastika as Hitler party symbol swastika is very ancient Hindu symbol used in every holy ritual or drawn before initiating any new work . Hitler himself never used the word “Swastika” to refer to his symbol. He called it “Hooked Cross”(“Haken Kreuz”). Hitler first saw the Hooked Cross symbol in a Christian monastery (Lambach Abbey) which he attended as a boy. He later adopted it as an emblem for his party. There is no evidence that he ever heard of the word “Swastika”.

My reply is on the verge of being off-topic, but Hitler referenced the swatsika in his autobiography ‘Mein Kampf’, though, when he was explaining why he chose that symbol to be the representative of the Nazi party. True, the symbol was around a long time before he came along and appropriated it for his propaganda purposes, but Hitler very much did know the term ‘swatsika’.

With that being said, I absolutely loved the whole adventurous atmosphere of this game! This is definitely one of my favourite Hosted Game as of yet. I was just wondering if there were going to be any future opportunities to get into a relationship with the ROs after this game, if you aren’t already - or is there only one chance to get into a romance with them, and after that, there is no more?

Regardless of the answer, I definitely enjoyed how each artifact came with its own unique episodic culture. Thank you so much for a fantastic story!!

@violet Thanks for your kind comments! And argh, the museum director is annoying. That museum director changed identity twice over the course of drafting, but I hoped that I’d purged all traces of his old names. I’ll change it in the next update, thanks for the spot!

@jurgeens and @AlexHaydenX : I’ve had a few comments like that in reviews, too. You’re totally right: nb people probably wouldn’t have been as widely accepted back then as (e.g.) Sam is in this game. I put in a comment at one point that Sam had faced some prejudice from some people at the university, as a way of indicating that, but yeah, it’s not very historically accurate. But hopefully it’s worth it in terms of nb readers feeling more included and represented.

@juniper890 : clock solution is 7:44

@Doveling_7 : Thanks for your comments, I’m happy you liked it! I wasn’t planning on letting players have another chance with the Book 1 ROs in the sequel, for the following reason. If a player gets all the way through Book 1 without getting with Cleo (for example), I should probably take that as a hint that that player isn’t interested in Cleo. That same player might find it annoying if they start the second book and they’re still getting hassled with “Hey, don’t you wanna hook up with Cleo?” type options! So, although Cleo (and the other ROs from Book 1) will appear in the sequel, they’ll be there in more of a “friend” role, unless the player already has an established relationship with them. But never fear if you ended the game single: there will be new ROs to explore!

Racism was depicted and portrayed in the story, I think Sam should’ve faced sexism and prejudice too.

I guess I’d say that the comment about Sam does indicate that they had faced those things, although you don’t see them having to face it in the narrative. And there’s a bit of misogyny represented, too, mostly in comments that both Paulus and McCrea make to Maria at different points. There’s going to be one antagonist in the sequel who expresses some homophobia, too. But this sort of thing is a very difficult balancing act, between (on the one hand) acknowledging the attitudes of the time, and (on the other hand) not making a game that’s massively offensive and exclusionary! I trod that line by occasionally putting historically-appropriate nasty remarks in the mouths of unpleasant enemy characters, while making sure that it’s clear that the MC and their allies aren’t down with those views. This inevitably involved playing down how much casual prejudices such characters would have faced in day-to-day life in the real 1930s, which I guess some people would find immersion-breaking. But I’m broadly satisfied with the balance I struck. As I said, I’m willing to trade off some historical accuracy for a more inclusive read.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think that characters being respectful towards Sam is necessarily any less realistic than, say, some nazis giving Stevo medicine or Indy riding out a nuclear blast inside a fridge.

Personally I had no issues with Sam, they felt developed as a character and its part of them. To me the sheer amount felt off.

Just a quick rundown so you can see where I’m coming

Sam - felt right being nb, like I said, felt developed.
Zhu - ok he is gay, don’t think that it would fly in Chinese spy military but I can believe that.
Jeff being gay(?) - ok, go Sam
But in England - Amazonian sending a note to papers that they are not female felt forced. Same goes to henchperson. It adds nothing in my eyes. Timmy I liked, that was a nice twist.

But in short it just started to feel forced

I’m going to be honest to you: I really don’t see the forced-ness of it. As someone who was with the author through most of the development process, I can assure you that everything in the game was there because they wanted it there, not because it was being forced through.
