First peek at Dr. Spillane’s big Oxford adventure:
Geez, I guess I joined this forum too late that I didn’t know there are 2 and 3 now.
I’m sorry I have to use a translation software to help me understand English and comment, but Relics 1 was my first text-based game (yes, because of language until I found a good translation tool earlier this year). I didn’t know much about this genre of games before and bought Relics1 out of curiosity when it came out. The result is that I really enjoyed your story. So I’m really looking forward to what happens in 2 and 3.
Since Relics2 is already in the release queue, I think I’d better wait and try 3 demo later. But I can’t wait to read the second story and be Dr. Spillane again.
Hey thanks! I’m so happy that you liked the game, and welcome to the wonderful world of text games!
Finally got around to read this and you didn’t disappoint. I have no shame in admitting that the very first choice in prologue had me lol since I chose historian speciality. That’s when I knew it’s going to be good. Also I’m really curious to see how chapter 3 will work out in case Maria is killed off.
Coming back to Relics world after a long time but didn’t feel like I was reading a new story, it was a really smooth transition and continuation. One more thing that I really liked about this one is the contrasting nature of adventure compared to first book where Spillane got to relics first and later they were retrieved by Nazis and the opposite is happening here. Will this trend continue like Egypt or is their another twist? This has really got me hooked. Btw my complaint from second book has not occured here and all specialities are given good time here but linguist must be toned down going ahead as it has the potential to become op very quickly given the international nature but I have full faith in your abilities as you have handled a similar situation in book 2 quite well.
One last comment that I will make is why has there been no chess player as a character in your books? Chess was a big fad in late 30s and 40s.
To be fair, it’s possible that some of the characters we’ve already met were in fact chess players, just not professional ones (that, I think, would be a little less common). It’s not as though any of the adventures so far have had anything to do with chess, so it wouldn’t have come up.
You never see the chess player, because they’re five moves ahead of you the whole time.
Thanks: I’m happy you liked it! And yes, I’m trying to watch the Linguist specialism (it won’t help at all in Chapters 1 and 3, which are set in English-speaking countries, so hopefully that will help keep it in check!)
As for chess, hmmm. Maybe I should do a chess-based puzzle some time?
Also, it looks like we have a tentative release date for Relics 2: June 2!
It seems the third game will be finished before the second game is out lol
YESSSSSSSS!!! FINALLY!!!
Playful thief romance! Does she snark? She felt like someone who snarks. Please tell me she snarks!
They snark!
Eeek! You are mentioning two of my favorite writers!
They were both Oxford professors, and members of a famous writing group called the Inklings, who used to meet up regularly at a pub called the Eagle and Child around this time. I just had to have them in this story somehow, even if it’s just a cameo appearance!
I was actually expecting JRRT to be speaking some variant of Elvish - from what I understand he was a pretty devoted linguist & poet before he became a writer of fiction (which happened after his military service).
Edit: I just realised he started writing after WW1! Seems he really didn’t enjoy being an officer.
“The most improper job of any man … is bossing other men. Not one in a million is fit for it, and least of all those who seek the opportunity.” -JRRT
I don’t know if anyone else here knows peak Simpsons as well as I do, but in the episode where Homer buys a gun, there’s a shot of him bouncing on his toes saying “come on, open up…”
That’s my level of anticipation for this chapter; most hyped I’ve been since Spillane went to Germany.
Hey @Schliemannsghost I was curious as to why do you want to know if we tried to kill Himmler? Are we getting another chance in Germany this time? Or perhaps the Failure himself?
Of course, to Spillane Elvish would just be gibberish… except maybe to the linguist Spillane who might notice similarities with some of the languages Tolkien took inspiration from.
It would probably be less recognizable to say ‘Another keeps speaking some language you can’t quite place’ as opposed to just mentioning hobbits.
And yet he REALLY loved monarchs, a job that is literally nothing but bossing people around.
IF I recall correctly, “hobbit” comes from “hobbitla”, which might have meant “hole-dweller” in archaic English or something. IF.
I can’t answer that yet without getting too spoilery, I’m afraid!
I was just reading the summery of characters that was given for chapter 3. Since the Nazi codeword is Winter only, is it not possible that Winter might not be a single person but a group of persons as no age or sex is mentioned ever? Can this case be like Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express where everyone was the culprit and everyone helped the cause with their own expertise? My word, they all might be traitors and we would not be able to pinpoint a single one.
