[RELEASED] Don't Wake Me Up - A game about love in video games - 01/02/24

I am so so glad I’ve discovered this game. Just reached the True Ending after going through Len’s Bad ending, deactivation ending, and don’t wake me up ending. I ended up going to school with little sleep because I had to just continue and just–wow. I’m pretty sure this game will be on my mind for a long time, thank you.

I saw this meme and thought - well, Len. Technically. Then I also thought 'wait I really wonder whether he was systemically programmed to run through a series of safety hazard crash test dummy slipups as part of his angst machine learning.

ok, super important question: Len’s playlist/song recommendations anyone?

There is a canonical answer, this was what I listened to an awful lot of the time I was writing DWMU and it took me all those years to gradually add to it

But I am interested what everyone has to say!

ohh. my gratitude knows no bounds for the playlist and, of course, for your absolute gem of the game.

personally, I find “Burn The Circus” by Tardigrade Inferno kinda fitting.

damn, yeah, how I could forget: Bullet With Butterfly by The Smashing Pumpkins.

Is it possible to still get the True ending in the Wake Me Up chapter?

The only ‘true ending’ is possible if the player did the Len romance and figured out he was faking it all to them.

speaking of songs, “against the kitchen floor” by will wood especially reminds me of true ending len.

OH MY GOODNESS IT’S PERFECT.

I’ve added it and the other songs suggested here to the Len Aesthetic playlist.

Listening to music while working and thinking is such a big deal to me. It really helped me motivate myself especially to listen to the playlist made by younger me - in some ways it helped me remember the tone of the game and hype myself up.

It’s also just really sweet to me to listen to the playlist because so much of it was made in phases according to when development was being done. I. E. There are the 2020 songs, the 2016 songs and so on.

I also realise how much of a messed up teenager I was to already be aestheticising being killed by the person you thought was your partner so hard but there you go. I listened to Misfits ‘Helena’ and Paper Chase ‘We Know Where You Sleep’ so much when working on the bad endings.

But overall I just… Have listened to ‘21st century Vampire’ more than any of the others. It’s kind of a tired rendition of an older style of scene music song made in 2021 about being a vampire just because you’re a miserable young adult. I also kinda imagined Len looking like Huddy in the music video quite a bit aha.

OMG.

So, I gave this a go a while ago. I guess I was feeling very dour and sour at the time, because I decided I was not in the mood for something that seemed silly and frivolous, and stopped reading around chapter 2.

But last night a link to the game appeared as a rec on another site, and I thought I’d give it another try. Apparently I was in a much more receptive mood because soon I was chuckling along, and round about chapter 3 I was falling in love with the game. So much fun.

And then of course I hit Len’s bad end lol. And actually started laughing and shaking my head in disbelief while mentally adoring you, author. It’s brilliant. One of the best IF’s I have ever read. What a rollercoaster.

So I just want to say, if anyone else was a sourpuss like me and skipped the game for being too light hearted at first, pick it back up and read it. You will sorely regret it if you miss this!

Right, I’m off to actually try for a good end this time. I suspect I will struggle, but I’ll love every moment of it.

It sounds like you’ve put a lot of time and effort into creating a unique and intriguing game. The concept of being trapped in a virtual world with memories of video games is really interesting.
I appreciate the diversity in character choices and the various worlds inspired by different video game genres. And wielding a weaponized top hat? That’s a cool and quirky touch!

All right all. The copyediting stage for the game on steam has been completed.

It seems the eventual launch of don’t wake me up is in sight! I know that probably everyone has played it for free already, but thank you for your support on the way!

I haven’t played it yet, and I’m really looking forward to it. It sounds amazing!

Brilliant, congratulations! I’m excited for it coming out!

Honestly one of the best IFs I ever played. Bravo to the author. Bravo. I honestly did not expect the bad Len ending. Bravo

Firstly, The “give me true love or give me death” option with Len has an error

speaking in a whispered voice, “do you feel that? Why is the ship getting rocked about like this? Are we going through a what-do-you-call-it… an asteroid field?”

“It’s Len and Valentine.”

Idky, but this whole situation had me quite literally balled up in the bed laughing. They were back there making a whole ruckus- our poor team had to throw a whole concert just to drown out the noise :joy:

You ignore them, skipping and spinning your way towards the entrance of the station, eager to see the blaze which has fuelled your heart.

MC…Why so evil bro?? Lmao I love it.

Len bad ending made me cry Now I feel bad. Ofc I instantly replayed.
