"Professor of Magical Studies"—Will you save the world just to get tenure?

On the poly relationship: you can be in a relationship with Darcy and Manish, though only if you’re not dating anyone else in a late chapter.

This might be a stupid question  but does ‘anyone’ include not choosing to date Darcy or Manish individually earlier (say like in chapter 6)

That’s a perfectly reasonable question. And, yes, that includes not dating either of them.

It’s been a while since I played a CoG that left me feeling satisfied after the game was finished. Not-too-punishing stat checks, well-written characters and a refreshing take on magic systems were definitely a big part of why I enjoyed PoMS so much.

And I’ve only done one play-through! Can’t wait to get life stuff out of the way to embark on many more.

Hiya, really enjoyed the game, just wanted to point out a small bug I encountered:

Since I habitually code-dive (sorry!), I’m aware TK means undecided, but I was in a relationship with Darcy and the Lodger at the time, so something might have gone a bit funky here.

Hey, all. I’ve completed my review of Professor of Magical Studies. Thanks for reading!

@ct1618, thanks for pointing me at that. I thought I’d squashed all the bugs in that but if code, but clearly not.

@BourbonDingo, thank you for that thoughtful review!

I just finished playing the game, and enjoyed it a bunch more than I thought I would, which considering I came here to see others opinions of the game before buying it, it’s kind of saying something. Just to clarify, I figured I would enjoyed a bunch, and I enjoyed it a bunch more than a bunch? So yeah. Shrug

I have never encountered a magic system that is dependent on patterns before, which was interesting. Also the characters were nice, although I have only romanced Darcy so far.
My only small quibble is that I wished we could’ve seen Desmond again, if for no other reason then too slowly strangle him for what he did to our friends, but that’s just me. Shrug

Kayla was delightfully sarcastic, which was nice since I haven’t really seen very many well done sarcastic characters. Also, is it bad that I can kind of see why people hate on Darcy, but I just can’t really do it? I mean I kind of understand where she’s coming from. With the whole wanting to advance her career bar none thing, even if she does kind of screw you over a few times.

Also, not really a quibble but more question, when do you think when performing an extremely risky and possibly deadly ritual, you would, perhaps, just lock the door?
I mean technically Desmond could’ve pattern unlocked it, but do you think that you would at least look around and decide to lock the door on the infinitesimal chance that someone wanders in on you? Shrug
All I’m saying is, really good book, worth the money I spent on it, and will probably replay it, although with a lot more combat oriented characters, because, fire? Shrug

I would tolerate Darcy a lot more if they didn’t have the audacity to get angry when you run them down the exact same way they (repeatedly) do to you.

The hypocrisy makes me want to grind their hopes and dreams to dust under my shoe

I thought that fit with their already established petty self-centeredness. If Darcy would take it with grace, vowing to outdo you, I’d have a newfound respect for them. But that’s not how they roll.
Darcy is very much “what you see is what you get”.

Hard same. The audacity to get angry at the PC for even being even a little upset about a life-wrecking betrayal that’s still fresh because of a memory pattern that was THEIR idea to begin with, just chef’s kiss infuriating. Sometimes, Darcy can even get mad at you for NOT being mad at them.

I was almost disappointed we didn’t get a chance to say straight-out “You have no integrity or moral compass. I do not respect you and I wouldn’t trust you to so much as watch an empty bag. I understand we have to work together, and I’m an adult, so I can remain civil. Stay out of my way and I’ll stay out of yours.”

I enjoyed it

Right up to ending.

Which I emphatically did not enjoy.

I already forgot most of the plot

One tweak I would love to see: when you get your year end review and they pout about your research or whatever, you can throw right back at them,

“But you know what I did do? I saved the universe, and not only does that give me a pass here, let’s all agree that it goes on my CV toward promotion to full professor. Or would you have preferred the alternative, because that’s what this nickel and dime’ing me is saying to the wider community?”

I’m imagining something akin to Ed Exley and the police brass at the end of LA Confidential.

Honestly, I thought the game was ok but Darcey made the game almost unbearable for me. Like I actually didn’t want to hang out or be friends with her from the start but you are forced to be friends and even after she does the thing to you, as professors she still keeps trying to bother you. I had done everything to show I didn’t want to talk or be friends with her including ignore her and also put the noise cancelling rock down in that one part but even near the end when she asks where do we go from here and I chose our separate ways, she says she thought we were friends…

Darcy had literally done everything to get me to not like her and also ruin my job and had also gotten upset when finally did the same to her. Before then, I had just wanted to go the route of ignoring her as best as I could. I also didn’t like how the story seemed to wag a finger at you any time I tried to defend myself when it came to her or just when I didn’t cover for her with the boss. For the lunch meeting early on she tells you it’s a waste of time and when I got there and the boss asks why she didn’t come, I tell him literally what she told me and the story asks why am I trying to sabotage her…what?

I’m curious if anyone got an ending that didn’t involve the college.

Do you mean to go join the corporation? My student mentee for an offer to join there, but I wasn’t ever angling for it so I don’t recall it being an option.

A more explicit nudge for anyone interested: Depending on your choices during Chapter 11, it’s possible to end up escaping the Vastness rather than shielding the Earth.

Oh right. That choice. I’ll have to try that one out at some point if only to watch Darcy pout as I leave her behind.

Hi! One question - is it possible to do that alongside having a happy ending with the Lodger?
