Otome Games

oh that was a fun demo! i’ve been having trouble finding good romance and good story games where you can choose the gender of the mc or have a male mc t.t

idk if i piped up in this thread before i probably did i but i have the memory of a goldfish im sorry if i have already and suggest “The Overlord Isn’t Another Isekai Protagonist Is He?” on itchio/steam and, if you like yandere ros and horror you can’t go wrong with “Something’s Wrong With Sunny Day Jack” on itch owo YES I AM SPREADING SWWSDJ PROGAGANDA EVERYWHERE MY LITTLE GREMLIN HANDS TOUCH letsee…
There’s also Obscura and The Remainder although I haven’t played TR myself yet… I heard it’s good but… emotional? so i’ve been holding off.imanemotionalwreckofachicken The art is beautiful tho.

Oh my god i completely forgot that was a game. i bought it on itchio ages ago then things came up and i just… forgot about it…
ok sorry for rambling im goin gto bed now BYE

lol It’s a good game, I totally recommend doing a play through of it if you haven’t yet. It doesn’t have an earth shattering plot but it’s a nice change of pace from some other Otomes. And Cove is adorable.

the voice acting in the Sunny Day Jack demo is just…

10/10, Cirrus can punish me anytime.

Talking about emotions, just finished Moon Observatory Anholly, and it was beautiful but at the same time really really sad. I hope the sequel comes out someday.

Seconding WRMK! Definitely a cozy VN to get into! I’ve just finished Baxter’s route last week and still can’t stop replaying the route again but if you’re into childhood friend into lovers, Cove is definitely a sweetheart! Though you can control when your MC’s fondness to all ROs in each step!

Edit: Salty Hound looks interesting and wishlisted it! I’m going to wait for it to be out of EA though.

For male MCs you’ll want to look for bishoujo/galge VNs, or even BL games if you still want to romance men rather than women (since otome is exclusively female protags). Or more general dating/life sim games/VNs.

Though a lot of indie VNs are starting to give you the option to choose (like Our Life and it’s sequel) or some will give you two protagonists (such as Trouble Comes Twice - which offers two versions of each route depending on which protag your playing).

But here are a few games you may like with male MCs (ymmv based on your tastes):

And we shall name this the Lunaris games effect

I didn’t played the extra routes of Our Life because it feels like cheating Cove
This happens sometimes on otome games, right? One route is too good and the others feels like cheating the true love of your MC  people tell this specially about Hanzo from Nightshade and Noritsune from Birushana (both games are on my backlog waiting to be played lol)

@nulCat another game with male protagonist (it’s 18+)

Hanzo’s route saved the game for me. I loved it that much.

This is true in my case. Majority of the time for me, there’s an only one RO that caught my eye and never played the other routes because of it. There were rare instances that I created a new MC for another RO I was interested in like the Wayhaven Chronicles for example. Otherwise, I just stick to one. So I understand your predicament!

Cove was really sweet though and one of the few childhood friend ROs that I felt more than ok with. However, Baxter fell on my usual go-to ROs and it didn’t disappoint. I’m replaying his route again on PC because I only finished it on mobile last week! Now, I’m wishing he has a wedding DLC like Cove but oh well, OL 2 have to come first and Qiu peaked my interest me a lot so I’m looking forward to it!

This is why I ended up having to make a spreadsheet. I can’t normally play the same MC with different ROs… just doesn’t work for me. There are only two exceptions–I have a OC that I use to “test” games with (to see if I want to play them or not, and if I do, I start making a new OC for each romance route I want to play) and the other one is in Fernweh, where my Reese-mancer is also going the poly route. Thank goodness I have another spreadsheet with about 700 names to choose from, lol.

Even making different MCs, probably they’ll get the same name, even with different personalities. Also, I can’t bring myself to make rude or selfish MCs, as I always go for the more quiet/shy or outspoken/flirty. And they’re always selfless. To resume, my MCs are always balls of sunshine.
When I first got into IFs, I named all my MCs Anna. After some time, I got tired of the Annas and started using the name Morgan (that is the name I think I use the most). Well, sometimes I use the name Amaterasu too - especially if there is a nickname option - her nickname is Teru. It started in Wayhaven because I couldn’t pick the name Morgan.
When I’m playing IFs or some otome game that don’t show the MC, I always headcanon my MC looking like / using the clothing style of Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones - Leather Jacket, Scarf, Jeans, and Boots. It is totally self-insert, because I love her look! I like to dress like this irl.

I’d go crazy with them all named the same!

But, like you, I don’t really like RPing rude or selfish MCs. I don’t like the fluttery Uwu types, either, though. RPing that type of character makes me feel like I’m trying to RP a tweener and I can’t get into their heads. I hated tweeners when I was a tweener.

Mine are almost always outspoken, but sometimes I like the stoically reserved MCs because it’s fun to play. I default to sarcastic because I’m me, but as my MCs develop and I figure out who they are, some of them lose the sarcasm and get all genuine (Naia in Fernweh and Dezh in Wayhaven, for example).

I love the name Amaterasu! I may have to steal that one. One of my favorite names is Bast… she’s my Zillah-mancer in Superstition (and she’s about ready to bang her head into a wall).

For some VNs, I don’t bother making a name. A lot of them are too shallow to bother (looking at you, Andromeda 6), and others are too railroaded, so the MC can’t really “develop” and has an already set personality. For those, I just use the suggested/default name or play them with Mia (Mia Valentine, because it makes me laugh). She’s actually an OC, too, with her own story, but she’s easy to get along with.

I end up with different faceclaims for different MCs. Like Dezh is Marie Avgeropoulos as Octavia Blake from The 100, only with dark red hair and not as psychotic as Octavia got after Lincoln was killed. If Mason was ever killed, I think she might get that crazy.

I do love Krysten Ritter as JJ, though. That’s an awesome faceclaim!

 Actually I like those MCs too! I will call it a guilty pleasure

Love this name. Ouch, the Zillah romance is tough in S3. I don’t know who is my favorite in Superstition, Zillah or Rahim (I like to suffer, apparently). I used to like Chris, but his route is hard not to lose my patience.

 I like the Andromeda Six story and all, the problem is that the ROs - especially after we got locked on a route - are just flavor text. Every romance is exactly the same.

Well, in most of the Japanese otomes, I don’t change the MC name because of the voice lines, and I don’t mind if the MC has a set personality too, because is the default for those games. My favorite MC ever is Teuta from Bustafellows. She’s a little blushing/shy/uwu but I love how she is the kind of person that speaks her mind and goes after her dreams.
Some MCs from Tailor Tales get on my nerves - Gray MC is one of those.

I would love to something like this as a bad end.

Yes! lol i do that sometimes too, it’s tough doing Dereks and Baxters routes but im doing them first then Ima play a clean playthrough just for Cove uwu

I was in the middle of making one! i was making a list of all the vns/ifs ive played and which mc goes into which route along with notes on the mcs personality

For these who play Our Life did you know about new 18+ Bonus Moment of Wedding Night?

It’s supposed to come out in August!

I didn’t know :heart_eyes:consider me sold

I did not know that either. Definitely adding that to the to-buy list once I’m back on college funding.

Gonna add to this;

This is gonna be a Patreon perk just like the other 18+ bonus moment. Meaning you have to subscribe to GB Patch’s Patreon at least once to play it once it releases.

It won’t be released outside of Patreon. The bonus moments are also a separate build and you don’t need to have Our Life installed to play them.

Congrats to Cove mancers!

Also OL2 extended demo and the kickstarter launch will be soon as well! I’m looking forward to supporting it! I love OL 2 a lot plus we get to see monochrome man in there as well!

I don’t know the name of the anime, but this is too good

It’s Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun. The manga is also really good if you like 4koma romcoms (and it leans heavily into the comedy).
