Officer of the Fleet (WIP)(~90k words)(Minor Update 5/5/25)

It is very possible to beat Wagner, especially if you focus on intelligence and adaptability

Yes. A close victory is the best you can get. There are four outcomes to that fight…

  1. Close victory
  2. Close defeat
  3. Defeat
  4. Clear defeat

This is partly why I think the fight needs to be harder, because it seems very few people are getting anything less than a close defeat which is kind of meant to be a minor victory in and of itself. We’ll see, I’ll keep tweaking things when I push the chapter 3 update

That sucks to be honest, even for a close (pyrrhic) victory.

I feel like the stat checks are already quite fine. If the difficulty were to be increased, I’d say give harsher stat checks only if the mc didn’t practice during prep (which would make sense since the story goes that the fleet that Wagner and mc are commanding are much bigger than usual). My mc is already hitting the lowest stat requirements, I feel like increasing it might actually make it impossible.

Pretty fun so far but not much to judge on yet since we basically just got introduced to the ‘combat system’ so to speak

Hey folks, just wanted to give a small update here. My computer died on me about a week ago. Thankfully everything is backed up and better yet a buddy of mine got it working again but it meant no progress was really made for the last ten days or so.

That said, I’m back into the thick of things now. Chapter 3 is progressing though still in its early stages. I don’t really want to guess when it will be done because things always grow bigger than I expect, but know I’m working on it everyday. That said, it is still quite a ways off. I appreciate you all coming along for the ride, and I’ll continue to keep you updated as things progress!

What does chapter 3 involve? {sorry for your computer btw}

It’s a very fun wip to play through, I’m excited to watch it continue.

I do appreciate how the varied options give both different stat boosts and flavor texts, so there’s quite a bit of replayability even with just a quarter of the game available so far.

Another thing I like is how the battles have quite a bit of options available even if you don’t/can’t unlock the options for other options, but passing the correct stats checks gives you more options, so there’s plenty of flexibility both before and during the combat (e.g. making a strategy for the first guy lets you fire torpedos but you still have a bunch of other options, like picking aggressive attack instead of cautious waiting, which wrongfoots him. Or how you(as in the player, not the character) can avoid Wagner’s trap by not assuming the undefeated commander screwed up the complex formation of…splitting your forces into four? and treating it as a trap.)

It avoids falling into the routine of ‘pick the best option/stats and stick to it’ or ‘stats don’t matter just go with your heart’ because stats unlock other options, but careful choices on the player’s end can benefit too, so if you’re a lucky dumbass strategic mastermind like me you can blunder into carefully pick the better options with or without passing the right stat checks/options. This means the game desn’t devolve into ‘slap correct option that picks your highest stats’ while still benefitting from the ‘numbers-go-up-wheeee’ from training your character’s stats, since the player can make up for deficiencies in their character, while character stats allow for more options, so they’re still plenty useful.

Also-will one of the ROs be a Raptor?

I’m just going to say wait and see on this one.

I’m very glad you felt this way, as it is something I’ve spent a lot of time and energy working on. It makes me happy to know its working so far!

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but no. These aren’t sexy aliens we’re talking about. If you ever find yourself in a room with a Raptor, you’ll be dead long before you can catch feelings.

There’s not a whole lot to comment on so far, but I just wanna say that this seems really promising! Aside from a few minor spelling/spacing errors the grammar is great, the characters are likeable, the aliens sound interesting, just all around great!

Just a question about the Raptors. What is the organization of their fleet. Also what will their ranks structure be? Will it be similar to the United Fleet or something?

They aren’t humanoid looking then?

Honestly I’m glad if they aren’t…hopefully they are as “alien” looking they can be

Thank you! I’m glad you’re enjoying it!

This is something that no one knows in universe. Their tactics are simple and almost animalistic (most ground forces killed and studied didn’t even wear clothing) so many experts aren’t even sure they have formal ranks or structure. Which of course begs the question, “How and why does an Alien race intelligent enough to make interstellar vessels rely on such rudimentary tactics when fighting?”

Not at all. I’ve kept the descriptions so far deliberately vague but
the nickname “Raptor” comes from a passing resemblance to a velociraptor. Just… add a few extra eyes, arms, and a barbed tail or two.
