Officer of the Fleet (WIP)(~90k words)(Minor Update 5/5/25)

will this affect the save files before this update {also yay new update :grinning_face: }

Yeah, I think that’s just an unfortunate consequence of changing stuff around. Which is why I don’t want to push too many minor updates.

how does this work?

I would willingly frag both Wagner and that french fry if doing so moves me up the ranks.

If the first two chapters stay as they are currently written, here is my official “canon.” 12 year old Rogers is the son of a mining captain with lacking, but not destructively low leadership. His reputation is high, but expectations are still tame despite his impressive abilities and young age. Managed to beat Wagner without even practicing a large fleet, and spent half the prep time partying.

Realistically, I’d say this is too easy @T_Chaney. I’m able to have decent leadership, 2 age categories below the max, and STILL beat Wagner without cheating, who just doesn’t seem to be that big a deal. Granted, I had to play almost exactly right, but I still think I was able to get “everything” I wanted.

The reputation consideration? It’s just some flavor text in case your record is bad but your rep is high.

Yeah, I’d have to agree. Perfect play is one thing, and I’m fine with a result like this being possible, just don’t want it to be easy. Probably won’t mess with it much until the next big update, but yeah it would appear things are still not quite as difficult as I would like.

What could have caused the stats to drop at quite a scale every time before facing Wagner? It’s not like we suddenly got too old for the match?

I think it was too much tiredness or exhaustion that caused the drop in stats.

As Friedrich mentioned, this is the fatigue mechanic. Every time you go into battle (not just the Wagner fight but all battles in future chapters as well) you will suffer some stat decay if your fatigue levels are high. It is then recovered at the end of the battle, so the effects aren’t permanent. This is meant to give an actual mechanical incentive to rest from time to time, rather than to simply push yourself to your breaking point. Effects can range from nothing, to minor, to massive depending on fatigue levels.

Funny enough, my fatigue level was just 40% by the time of the Wagner fight.

Thank God my build doesn’t need to prepare that much against Wagner lol
(PS: know what else is massive?)

Cool, and just in case I didn’t make it clear, I wanna explain a couple of choices I made.

Why 12 years old? Well, I wanted to go young, but being 8 not only has 20 fewer points in starting attributes, but also an extra +1 to expectations, making the future battles harder and having higher bars to clear.

Why not admiral’s son? Once again, expectations. Being the admiral’s son gives you 25 extra attribute points, but +4 expectations. Military family or mining captain are both 20 points, but only a +2. Average civilian should still give +5 to each, in my opinion, because a 20 point drop is insane.

I didn’t go undefeated, though, “only” winning 3 of my 5 scripted battles, but won against Baker and Wagner, and got quite a bit of rep from other choices along the way. So as a 12 year old with only partial nepotism, the expectations are very minor despite a great deal of ability and respect.

I feel like this is about the best combination of “easy” future and strong legacy. Now, obviously I don’t know how expectations will work, but that hopefully gives some insight into what I weighed when building my character.

This is all very helpful. Thank you

It all depends on how you play I guess…

Playing as 8 year old is diabolically hard atleast imo :skull:

Playing as an 8 year old should be hard. I’d argue that it should be impossible to beat Wagner at 8, but that’s just my perspective. That said, being 8 does make it even harder than you might think, because starting expectations are even higher than a 12 or 14 year old.

Exactly! Is realistic…which is something that I like.

But I feel like the dev should make it a little bit harder for the 12 year olds too.

12+Mars+Admiral dad is too easy rn

I won’t even mention the mining captain start lol

12+Earth+Admiral is imo the best start for a twelve year old for that yummy intelligence bonus

The last fight seems too easy considering how good Wagner is supposed to be. The fight and prep leading up to it is good, but maybe there should be harsher stat checks and maluses based on how little prep you did? Imo an average build MC might be able win but the text should emphasize how close it was.

Is the best outcome that you can get against Wagner a close victory? If the question was not asked before.

You can win out right under the right conditions.
