It does imply some time travel.
Then I would encourage authors to point people to the game “Holocure” which is a clone of Vampire Survivors, and arguably even better. Or they can point them to “Lies of P” which is a Pinocchio Dark Souls Clone. Or how Bladerunner and pretty much any other story about androids is a copy of an amalgamation of Isaac Asimov’s work.
To me, saying somethingnis bad or complaining about it being a clone is jist as selectively pedantic as saying “You didn’t write this on a mac!” It’s just people trying to gatekeep and become elitist. It only becomes a real problem from the aurhor’s side if it’s so blatant that it’s plagarism. People just need to be informed is all
Once again this issue seems to be cropping up, so I am going to circle back and link a very relevant article I had linked last month:
This deals with common misconceptions (or myths, as the author calls them) about plagiarism. This article should help firm up your understanding.
I do not think anyone is accusing @ViIsBae of taking any ideas whole-cloth from others. So let’s be clear about that.
Story elements and plots are often universal, but it is what each writer does with those that differentiates each from the other.
If you have not yet read the linked article, I would suggest doing so because it really does a decent job of explaining the issues brought up.
It is all about what a reader is exposed to first; I’ve seen people claim Tolkien copied Terry Brooks … something I think @Havenstone would find funny, I am sure.
I hope this week is going well for everyone.
I have completed 8,000 words of 16,000 in Chapter 4 for my current pass, so I am still on track to meet my November goal of completing Chapter 4 with this pass I am doing.
As is often the case, numbers alone do not tell the complete story because the remaining bits of chapter 4 will be more heavily changed and thus require more work.
For those doing Nano this year, I hope you are making your goals!
I’ve not taken part directly in nano this year but am using November to work on the first chapter of A Familiar Magic even though the past 8 days have mostly been getting idea down clearer (iirc the actual demo had just passed 2000 words so far.
Looks like I have bigger and peskier fish to fry, so that one is off the table for now.
Update: Maybe I will have to learn the basics of writing IF parser format. I’ll get to this and explain more stuff later.
Had a couple days where it didn’t feel like I was getting too much done. Kept at it today and enjoyed one of those moments where ‘I’ll make sure to do something’ gradually turned into feeling up for a little bit more, then a little bit more, etc. etc. wound up with a couple of interactions I really enjoy.
Came to some decisions about the scene I’m working on, mostly just that I’m going to excise most of what I originally planned in favour of getting to the parts that matter. I’m starting to get comfortable with the intracacies of working with CS and I realised that I was signing myself up for a fair bit of work that was detrimental to the pacing. Need to consider what bang I’m getting for my buck!
Also splatted some quicktest bugs, huzzah.
I finally finished the draft of Raishall (that last chapter was such a pain to get done. Remind me not to write any more fight scenes with action variables depending on MC build for a while .) It’s looking like being about 72k-ish words but still needs a good edit so the number might move up or down from there. Next step is to go bug hunting (of which I am sure there are many in this last section.)
Probably not a great month for Nano for me this year. I’m planning to clean up Raishall and Wizardry then with luck move onto Dragon Challenges so lots of editing, testing and rewriting rather than straight putting stories down.
My fights tend to be shorter than I like because of this very thing.
oh good grief it’s already hard enough doing minor scene variations I could not imagine structuring entire fight scenes around that x_x
Nice job getting out there and meeting other enthusiastic writers. Sometimes it is just nice to discuss the bones of writing or share ideas---- even get fresh perspectives.
I suffer this ailement. I took advice from our awesome moderator and spent two days geeking out on a video game. The game had a lot of dialouge so it was homework.
You said it. I often hit them with the blazing speed of the prior chapter’s velocity---- a giant water slide into the pool of the next chapter---- skimming across the water like a bird. Then WHOosh, I plunge into the abyss. “I lost my water wingies!”
Villains can be some of my most remembered characters. Some of my favorite characters in stories happen to be villains---- If they are stand alone characters with depth beyond the plot. Ok, so your villain is highly unlikeable. Are they proactive? Are they competent? As long as they have something. Then, maybe you just wrote a really good villain.
A sympathetic villain? That is interesting…
I ask myself these questions. I personally do not mind “game-like” features within the story when picking stats. From personal feedback, and just reading threads, anything that breaks emersion can potentially be bad. I now think in terms of emersion. It could be more distracting to create needless story entries to satisfy covering the stat choices in dialogue. And this is when you have to just go with your gut I think. Good luck.
I would love to hear your personal story about it should you have the time. Message me anytime.
That sounds really fun and insightful! I will look for the posts thank you.
Ok folks. What a lot of interesting conversations. The first 9 days of November are filled with writing and good discussion. I wish everyone the best. I do not have a birthday this month, but my pup Jake has his 3rd birthday today. I should get him outside to play and have fun. I posted a big update to my WIP---- A tour de dialogue---- About one and a half months of pain and learning. I also edited the entire thing for plot clarity. It may actually be a story. Thanks to all who deal with my long emails.---- And to all who are marching through the jungles of their own creations. Bring a machete.
It’s always interesting to see which parts different writers prefer (and not prefer). I personally love writing dialogue. If I could make a story with nothing but, I definitely would.
My favourite part of the set up to writing a story is when you are doing the basic worldbuilding.
Currently I am creating the system of magic for AFM.
I’ve got the source of mana, the wytchkin.
I now know that mana in its natural form is a negative energy and that witches filter it through their familiar to flip their mana to a positive energy and when a witch dies their collected positive mana then returns to the wytchkin which keeps a balance of positive and negative mana.
My next step it to come up with the primary branches of magic and the secondary branches.
I love world building as it’s something I can do while I’m stuck at work.
An example of mine:

My opening move is to reach out and telekinetically

I fly directly at them and dodge the opening swing of the leader. As I pass the group I
grab onto the foot of one of the super humans before whipping them to the side. They crash into two others and fumble to the ground.

Once one of them retreats, I shift the blast to another without letting the stream of ${BlastType} go.

The after jam is hitting me hard. Trying to return to ordinary nobody want to talk with me rest of the year. At least yesterday I wrote 1k
1k is good. I’ll have a look later, can you send me a link to your topic?
Topic? I have no topic. I give up years ago to have wips in the forum.
This forum is an amazing comunity very interesting and proactive…
If you are in the range of the only two things they care.
Romances and Size of an entire Encyclopedia.
I don’t work those. A serie of Children’s stories about a retired Racoon detective and Three kittens is something I can not expect people care about it.
Things are like they are. And People are totally in they right of only like certain things in a certain way.
It is it feels disheartening and sad being in this situation. But I bet most people here has suffered it before
No what, hold up, that sounds amazing! This might just be me, but I love reading children’s books as a guilty pleasure. I find them to be less serious than normal books, and I frequently go into my younger sister’s room to snag one of the Peter Rabbit books when I need a little calm down, they are very soothing. My favourite book of all time is The Polar Express, although I haven’t read it in a while - I highly recommend the movie, though.
I’d love to have a read through and give feedback if you’d be willing to share
I have currently two volumes of my Con series on Cys. Elvis and The Beauty contest And Madame Racoon and the missing instruments set in my own universe that I co authored
The feedback from kids, parents and teachers have been amazing!
And I love so much writing Kid’s stories! If It wasn’t for the fact I am adamantly focused on published here or dying trying I would have like ten volumes.
If you prefer working in shorter games. Have you considered maybe releasing them as an anthology of shorter games?
You get to keep doing the shorter games and still end up having a larger totally. After all four 50k games would still total 200k
