We don’t have to pay money to submit individual apps. We just have an annual developer fee per company.
Steam has a $100 submission fee, but that’s just Steam. (And, in theory, we get that back once the game earns $1000 there.)
The $1000-per-app cost is in the salary-time that it takes to tick all the boxes and make all the art and screenshots and all the other tasks that go into a release.
In the spirit of embracing inevitability (I feel better now than I did at the start of the thread, but still have some deep reservations that don’t matter a lick given the power to change this rests solely in Cupertino), and providing positive suggestions for the app, I would say that if there’s any way to make achievement points accumulate within the app itself (as in, points from individual games adding to an aggregate, app-wide total) it would likely be a popular feature, and really encourage readers to buy more titles. And replay them too, which would then hopefully reduce dissatisfaction with short games.
As an Android-only user, I can’t really contribute to this discussion other than to register my unfortunate position, at this stage where I understand that Android decisions are still TBD, that omnibus-exclusive Android releases would prevent me from playing any further Hosted/Choice games unless they were released to Steam, simply because I don’t have room on my phone for a whole additional useless omnibus app. I’ve already got to make the heartbreaking decision to delete the previous game to get new ones when they come out, I have mega not got space for a placeholder app.
And to reiterate-- yes, I know decisions are not being made about Android right now. I’m commenting now because frankly, no guarantee that I’ll notice when those decisions ARE being made.
I don’t know if that is possible, but any overarching feature that would encourage customers to buy more games using the “collect them all!” subliminal power of achievements sounds like an idea to consider! I like your thinking.
If the Omnibus is successful on iOS and then done for Android and successful there, do you think it would also become available for Steam as well? - Partially answered.
Furthermore, would such an app allow for (eventually) cross platform purchasing for all future releases? Not that I don’t mind paying for a game twice if I want to use it on my phone (which is rare), but being able to use a single app and have access to every game would be nice (because a few games never released to Steam and I hate using my phone to play games due to battery issues).answered
Additionally, would the Omnibus (because it needs to be capitalized, right?) have the option to have a wallet, much like the play store and Steam? And would that wallet be able to be filled using our Steam or Play Store wallet if such a wallet in the Omnibus existed? Additionally, would this eventually lead to something like Patreon or Kickstarter or something, where we could use some funds in our wallet to give potential authors a monetary incentive to continue creating their games as a tip jar? (This is also assuming that some of the tip goes to CoG as well)
PS. Reading through 191 posts to make sure this question hasn’t been asked was fun…
From what I understand, the omnibus app will use the credit/payment method from what platform you downloaded it from since it is still like your regular individual app with in-app purchase.
Long term you’re actually likely to save space through an omnibus. There’ll be a lot of common “wrapper” code across each app that will no longer be duplicated. I’d also like to think that you’d be able to include only one master copy of the CS interpreter, for example. Although in practice, I appreciate: due to updates, backwards compatibility and the like, I’m sure that latter one might be “easier said than done”.
I don’t know if you people have figured out how the books that have already been purchased will be accessible in the Omnibus. So I was wondering, what if the save game feature which backs up the save files to your email, was tweaked so that it could back up some kind of license key or something. But I think this method can be easily bypassed if someone’s email was to be leaked, not that I believe anyone from this community would try and use it to their benefit. And also the fact that it would be a pain updating every book and figuring out how this license key will work, whether it would be random or not and the like.
I just pushed the button to release v1.1 of the Hosted Games omnibus app. It includes a new “Select a Game” screen that looks nicer than the plain text one we had before. (It typically takes several hours for new versions to be visible on the App Store; look for it Thursday morning.)
Maybe authors could incentivize the branching out as well, in the same vein as achievements. In ZESH, you gain access to more skill points if you played ZE. Extra bells and whistles like this may encourage buying more of an author’s game. Or even if authors implemented this working together, if there is a bundle released that contains possible opportunities like this.
I know it’s been mentioned before, but author pages would definitely be a plus.
