Need Coding Help - Year-Long Bug

Okay, so, I’m the Author of Phoenix Rising, and if you’ve been following along with that game, you know that for the last YEAR I have been stymied by an error. I’ve fixed literally every other bug in the game, but this one… or it might be three… I’m not sure. all I know is, this is how it shows up:

It says it’s a boolean error, but there’s no goddamn way it’s a boolean error because I’ve removed every boolean that is in those red lines. multiple. times. Things I have tried so far:

  • Removing the section and rewriting it.
  • Removing this section entirely.
  • Changing this section from Multireplace to **if and **elseif statements.
  • Changing this section BACK to multireplace
  • Uninstalling & reinstalling VSCode.
  • Closing and reopening the project. (In case the error was there because VSCode was getting stuck on old code. It’s not.)
  • SWITCHING FULL ASS COMPUTERS.
  • Deleting and re-downloading the chapter1.txt file from my github account
  • Asking other choicescript friends, who all offered different ways of fixing the code, including but not limited to rewriting the entire damn game from scratch. I did not do that one for obvious reasons. Not ready to throw a years worth of work away yet.
  • and I know how people feel about AI, but after a year a girl gets fucking desperate, okay? I even threw it at AI, to see if the machine could hallucinate me an answer. It did not. I then went back to using the backup I’d created before I ever let AI touch it.
  • Oh and don’t forget updating the entire Choicescript engine, to see if THAT would help. It also did not.

Please. Please, help. I don’t know how you could help, honestly, not without reading through the entirety of the damn game and figuring out how the hell I managed to create a boolean error where there isn’t one?!

Basics:

  • I code in VSCode Studio, with the Choicescript Extension on
  • I save the file to a linked Google Drive folder.
  • This section is meant to be a daydream with each section meant to change specific key parts of the daydream based on the Gender, Sexual orientation and Romantic orientation of the player character. And yes, that’s a ridiculously complicated bit of fucking coding, considering the sheer number of combinations that creates.
  • Not to intimidate anyone, but to give an idea of scope, this chapter alone has 9109 lines of code.

I wish I could say I could pay for this help… I really do. But other than the thrill of solving a year long puzzle, I have no monies with which to pay. I’ll happily add your name to the credits. I’ll even sing your praises on every damn social media I have, including my patreon. Please. I’m desperate.

Just to make sure I have the full picture, a few questions.

  • What do you mean by it “might be three” errors?
  • I am unfamiliar with the UI of VSCode Studio, but is this error only flagged there? To put it another way, is this an error that comes up when you run quicktest and/or randomtest, as well?
    • And if it does occur during quick-/randomtest, what does the pop-up say?
  • Would it be possible to include the full snippet (preferably with text wrapping) and not just a screenshot so we could see the full line that’s returning an error?

Thank you, and sorry that this has been such a source of frustration for you.

I noticed there are nested *fake_choice sections. That might be causing problems. Have you tried changing the outer one to a *choice?

@writing_fever

No, thank you for even responding! You give me hope!

  1. I mean that the red lines appear in three seperate places, each one saying Boolean error, and I’ve yet to be able to isolate if theyre the SAME boolean error, or three seperate boolean errors. Or even if they ARE a boolean error. I’m not convinced this isn’t a test by the gods to see if I off myself out of frustration.
  2. I do not reliably know how to run quicktest and or random test. Every time I try, it comes back and says there’s a gamebreaking error. Aka, THIS error.
    3)I’m… Honestly not even sure where to cut the snippet OFF in order to put it here? I’m honestly just about ready to just hand the entire game file over to someone and say HERE. but I’ll try:

@Jonathan_Bagelman

The problem is, this is a matryoshka doll of nested choices based on multiple variables. and I don’t have an *else to put at the end of the choice in that small section. I did try that in some of the earlier iterations, months and months ago, and I can’t remember what it did, but I remember seeing a hell of a lot more red in there than I do now. The weirder part is, there are EXACTLY THE SAME kind of nested fake_choices in earlier parts of the code that WORK JUST GODDAMN FINE. and I haven’t been able to figure out what the differences are!

I have cried so many times over this damn code, omg.

**Edit: …does anyone know if there’s a limit on how much someone can put in a comment? Because if there isn’t, maybe I can just put the whole damn 9k line txt file right here…

Upload the scene files to CoGdemos and enable code sharing. I’ll try to see if I can reproduce the issue.

Even though it’s broken? …will that work?.. fuck it, I’ll try it. Gimme a bit

I think this might be your best bet if you want to share the whole text file.

On an unrelated note, though…

  • What do you mean by: “I don’t have an *else to put at the end of the choice in that small section”? Do you mean that the code returns another/different error when you include an else, preventing you from doing so, or that it worked fine without an else in a different spot in your code and so you chose not to include it in this snippet?
  • Are you absolutely, positively sure that “footnotes” is not a string or numerical variable? I don’t mean this as condescending – I know that I’ve just had similar errors in the past that have been caused by me glossing over my startup file and accidentally defining things wrong.

EDIT:

Oh, wait, I missed this. What does the error message say? Is there a line number listed? Also, just a reminder that your game needs to be able to pass both quicktest and randomtest if you want to publish it with Hosted Games.

I put it on COGDemos, but I don’t know if I got codesharing set up right? I think I did? I checked the box for open source code?

@Writing_Fever
I mean that at the end of a choice you have to put an else, which leads it to the next section, right? but that’s not the way I had this section working. See, it was supposed to be like this section:

*elseif pc_sexuality_a = 2

            *comment AceAro PC w/ Female Spouse

You imagine how you'd shake with joy during your three bows, one to heaven, one to your parents, one to your wife. You imagine the wedding feast and the wedding night, those soft, crimson-nailed hands holding yours as you explain your thoughts on what intimacies may or may not be necessary throughout your marriage.

              You imagine a year or two of just the two of you building a life together, a perfect partnership spent learning and benefitting from one another's presence, before one of you broaches the subject of children.

THIS section works without the error showing up, for some goddamn reason. TAT

Footnotes is a boolean:

As for Quickstest and Randomtest, yes I know it needs to pass them, and eventually it’ll be able to, I’m sure, but right now its NOT able to because of this fucking bug. TAT

And it gets the same thing back when I try to run the randomtest… but the thing is I don’t think I’m DOING it right, I dunno, it doesn’t seem the same as it used to when I tried to run it and I can’t remember HOW to run it through VSCode. TAT It’s been MONTHS and MONTHS since the last time I did this.

Okay, I didn’t get any different result trying to use randomtest (I think choicescript extension may not be working right???)

But I did do a quick playtest to show you guys what error happened:

So there’s that bit of data for you.

    Of course, if you can find a way to distinguish yourself, you could perhaps live on your own, earning a living. There were ways to do so, and while you'd have to pay homage and your family would still be free to try and make use of you, if you were clever you could manage it. For this one, I believe the error might be caused because you have multireplace trying to reference the variable “PC_sexuality” that you’ve described in your *comment as starting at 0 (and a player who chose to be “AlloAllo” could keep that number at 0). I am fairly confident that multireplace is still arrayed from 1, not 0 (see this post) so it may be returning an error because of that.

Good news. I found the error. It is upstream due to an indentation issue. (I was fixing a bunch of errors so I’m unable to point to to exactly where it is unfortunately!)

Bad news. You really need to run Quicktest on this. There are indentation issues all over the place, and some other issues with using numbers as booleans. Also ‘&’ is used for string concatenation not a logical ‘and’. Quicktest will also not enjoy initialising any values as ‘0’ in the case they are referenced by a multireplace, so you may want to set it to 1 or add in some code to set a default if you are running tests. You also cannot use a carriage return inside a multireplace.

More good news. I went through and fixed most of the issues and it passed Quicktest.

Potentially bad news. I’m not sure on the correct indentation for those types of errors. So I went with what seemed logical to me, but I cannot guarantee I got those correct. I also had to change a few variable values and cannot guarantee I reset them all.

If you want my updated versions of your files, I’ll upload them or send them to you somehow, but if you want to do it yourself, happy bug hunting! (It took me about an hour, including setting up the files)

I’ve been working on chapter1, but as @CodedQuill said, there are a lot of issues with the code, and I’ve spent a good hour with it already.

  1. Incorrect indents
  2. You should use ‘and’ and not ‘&’ for multiple *if conditions.
  3. clothier, cook, philosopher, scribe, musician are not boolean values in startup, yet treated as boolean values in chapter1.*if (clother) will not work.
  4. Multireplace needs to start from 1 and not 0. (I personally hate the multireplace command, and prefer to use *if.)

I’m unsure if VSCode Studio is giving you a false positive on those lines in your OP. That said, I recommend testing and fixing the game in traditional choicescript and quicktest first, and seeing if you still get issues you can’t solve. VSCode Studio is not officially supported by CoG, and I always recommend using the official quicktest and randomtest to check your game.

Good luck.

Solution to this (if you want to keep 0 as a possible value) is @{PC_sexuality+1 allo|het|etc...} i.e. add +1 to the formula so a value of 0 is treated as 1 instead.

@Writing_Fever Okay, that’s good to know, when I read the Multireplace thing in the wiki

Not gonna lie, it got me REAL confused. So that 0 was me trying to make use of the Multireplace without having to put a +1 next to the variable?

@CodedQuill !!! YOU ARE AMAZING!!! Thank you so, so so much. You have no idea how amazing you are!

  1. Quicktest still eludes me, so I guess I’m gonna have to study that more.
  2. Should I use a *linebreak instead then? I didn’t think you could do that in a Multireplace. Or does this mean I just have to make sure any multireplace only has 1 paragraph in it, and that’s it?
  3. I swear to god I saw somewhere that & worked as a replacement for and. I’ll scrub it from the code, so that it doesn’t make issues going foward.
  4. Quicktest vs. 0 - This seems weird to me, but as I said previously Multireplace got me fucked up. I will take your word for it and see if I can’t just stop using 0 at all. I don’t think I ever really wanted to? But I was convinced I had to for some reason???
  5. Indentation I have like, a ridiculous amount of experience fixing, so I’m not worried too much about it. I’m just ever so grateful that you managed to figure out what I fucked up!!!

I would appreciate the updated versions, so that I can learn from your wisdom!

@ChanceOfFire

  1. I was under the impression I was pretty good with indents thanks to VSCode auto-indenting stuff, but thank you for pointing it out, I’ll see if maybe I can do an indentation bug-run!
  2. See above, but yeah, I’m starting to get that.
  3. Those four are still being implemented, but they SHOULD have been triggered as boolean values in startup.txt, so I’ll triple check those and figure out what’s going on there. Thanks for catching that typo too!
  4. I’m honestly starting to understand the hate for it, but I’ve seen so many people comment on how “inelegant” *if is, plus I hate making *else statements. TAT Although, I have that inline code thingie that’s supposed to make it to where it doesn’t NEED *else statements?? Maybe??? I don’t even know anymore.
  5. I wouldn’t know if VSCode was. I use VSCode A) because it makes it visually easier, since I’m neurodivergent and need the visual stimuli, and B) because that’s where I learned to code to start with and it just makes me more comfy. That said, the choicescript extension does have Quicktest and randomtest built in, I’m just not proficient in using them. I’m not sure what you mean by “fixing the game in traditional choicescript and quicktest first”?

@will
Ohhhhh, that actually makes SENSE. Okay, see, I could never figure out WHY Choicescript needed that +1, but if Multireplace AUTO STARTS at 1, and it needs to be told to ADD 1 to the Zero to make it WORK, that makes SENSE. TAT I feel even dumber now, why didn’t I figure that out from the research I did???

Also: I literally JUST figured out how to make the *if appear as *if instead of italicising. there’s a \ in front of it. I feel so dumb.

You can use [n/] but I’d highly recommend just using *if/*else instead if you’ve got line breaks.

I have never ever seen this particular expression outside of RPGMaker, where it’d be v/ instead of n/.

I will take your advice to heart and just make a rule for myself that *if/*else is all I use when multiple paragraphs are being used.

Oh! And as I promised, since you’re the one who fixed-fixed it (Thanks to everyone else who helped, of course!) I’d like to include you in the credits, so please let me know how you’d like to be listed (feel free to shill your work too, give me links to things you want linked to) via DM.

It is, but not in ChoiceScript.
