Monsters of New Haven High - last update 4/02

I’m lost. Since when will there be magic?

Wendigos and Demons have a magic reserves stat. I asked about vampires because we don’t know what happens from feeding on monsters.

Can they feed on monsters?

@Sashira said yes but… something happens and we don’t know what.

I wish the Wendigo had a non patriotic answer about the reservation…

Like what, for example?

All the choices are supportive of the tribe but just changed how you veiwed their situation, I just wanted a indifferent/don’t care view of the actual tribe instead of the situation. It’s why I specifically mentioned @Sashira and am doing so again in the hopes she considers it.

Would you like the wendigo to go into a blood crazed state and just murder everything? Actually… That does sound like fun.

If I could do that (…and knew what a Wendigo looked like/was) …i would SO play a Wendigo!

here is a bit of info & a short story about the Wendigo

The Wendigo is a demonic spirit believed by Algonquin-based Native American tribes to possess humans and turn them into cannibals.

The term “Wendigo” or “Windigo” is used to describe both the evil spirit as well as the creature that humans can become when possessed by the spirit.

The “monster” version of the mythical creature is human-like, but very tall and gaunt, with deeply sunken eyes and yellowish, decaying skin. They are impossibly thin and have an unending hunger that craves only human flesh.

The best known way to become a Wendigo is through cannibalism. By eating another human being, even out of necessity for survival, a human can be overcome by these spirits and be transformed into one. The fear of turning into this creature was so strong that it was preferable to kill one’s self rather than resort to cannibalism.

The Wendigo legend was prevalent in the northern United States and Canada, and particularly roamed around woods and forests in the coldest areas where food was scarce and survival was challenging.

There is a condition known as “Wendigo Psychosis” under which people with access to food sources would inexplicably become overcome with the need to consume human flesh. One such person, a Cree man named Swift Runner, famously slaughtered his entire family in 1878 and ate them, despite being only 25 miles from the Hudson Bay Company’s supply post.

In 1907 a Oji-Cree man named Jack Fiddler and his brother were arrested for killing over 14 people who he claimed were Wendigos or about to become them.

As tribes have been more and more influenced by surrounding culture, the reports of the Wendigo have declined over the years, but as with most evil spirits, it is doubtful that this creature is gone for good.

What’s the correlation between the “Academics” stat and the PC’s actual GPA? What does an “Academics” of 10 represent? A 20? A -5? At present, the player can only guess as a to what each value means, which isn’t really workable considering the importance of the PC’s GPA to the story.

If the “Academics” stat has no significance beyond deciding the character’s GPA, I’d suggest scrapping it entirely and replacing it with the GPA value itself. If it does, some reference should be included to help the player figure out what their GPA is, or a separate “GPA” value should be added to the stats screen.

Gotta say, this is one of my favorite WIPs at the moment. Can’t wait to see more!

I have a question. Is there legitemacy to the hunter/artemis incest claim? Cause that sounds like a whole other plot twist/arc/whatever you wanna call it and it sounds like it would be interesting to investigate.

Like I said, I will come back soon to answer a lot of these questions, but I noticed this one and it has an easy answer. Academics is how good you are at school and studying; a good student like the vampire can still end up with a low GPA. Actual GPA stats will come into play soon (I think I’ll give an exact breakdown at the beginning of day 2.) Doing well on the tests this week are the biggest factor in your GPA; also, don’t skip class or get caught cheating unless you want a huge grade penalty.

Aaah, I getcha. Thanks!

I’m hoping that I’m able to just seduce my way through all the tests lmao.
@Sashira when I’m a demon, I can sometimes pick the leather notebook which infers that I read the pages. Even though I didn’t. I think it happens when I pick to specify in attractiveness and/or popularity.

Quick update - character creation has been fixed up. There are now seven pre-set names and last names for each gender/species combo. Also, choosing the leather-bound notebook no longer affects whether or not you have done your homework in first period.

One scene totally done, fifteen to go! :grinning: I’m doing a little better than it sounds, I keep going back and forth between them.

BTW - coming up with all of these names, and trying to make them meaningful, was a lot harder and took a lot longer than I thought. Some of the non-binary name options in particular could stand improving, if anyone has suggestions.

You always post updates at 3 am central time ;-;

Taking a break from coding, so time to get to some questions.

Here it is (I posted it awhile ago in this thread.) It’s still in progress - the new version probably won’t be done before this next update.

I want a more “human” group shot, but thanks for the suggestion. Also, vampires cannot be bats in this world.

Going on the “To Do” list for total outcast/monstrous types.

Magic reserves represent the stored up “energy” of the species.
Goblins are inherently magical creatures. They won’t have a magic reserve stat because you can assume they will always have enough for their purposes. The only “feeding” they do is eating food.
Demons use a tiny bit of energy when shapeshifting, and a lot for healing. Their reserves go up quickly since they have so many sources (admiration, romance, sex) but also use it up more often.
Vampires use energy only for healing, basically, and will have their abilities as long as they are not blood-starved. Their reserves go up whenever they drink blood.
The wendigo is on a starvation diet, but will slightly gain magic reserves when eating flesh. Their magic controls healing, and at higher levels… well, it’s pretty difficult to get a wendigo there without getting locked up, fair warning. But if they do eat enough, they will gain some new powers. The rumors about those are not completely true but not completely false.
Werewolves are stronger during the full moon; this is the only real variation to their reserves and will boost their regularly raised stats temporarily. Shifting and healing does not consume their energy (though it will make them really hungry.)

Hunter and Artemis are very close and have a highly dysfunctional family. That is all I will say about them for now. However, I do think it would be hard to sympathetically write an LI with that kind of background so - you can at least assume the rumors are exaggerated.

I think Day 1 is a bit much to take in already, with all of the stuff I’m adding now. So yes, beginning of Day 2 is when you’ll see your actual GPA (and be reminded of the schedule of tests for the week, which are Wednesday-Friday except for the English test; you will have English extra credit opportunities instead.) Adding it to the stat screen as of that point is a good idea and it shall be so.

Don’t be silly. If Wendy lost control she would be flesh crazed. She isn’t a vampire.

…If you do not want that to happen, be sure to keep up your wendigo character’s resolve, mental stability and humanity. The wendigo version of monstrosity is somewhat more severe than other species. The wendigo’s life has improved, but they are far from being “all better.”

I will be trying to code in some more neutral wendigo personality choices, since they do start out the game being awfully idealistic (I intended it to make for a more dramatic arc if they do go feral again, but I also don’t want them to sound two-dimensional or preachy.)

The wendigo was sometimes in a state of hibernation, and otherwise… does not remember clearly. If you want your wendigo MC to stay fairly sane and not go dark side, I would try to leave it that way.

Yes. If it didn’t turn out the way you want you can also lie.

To answer all convert to vampire-wendigo-werewolf questions, please search this thread. Long story short, your opportunities to convert people to your species will be dangerous/limited-impossible-impossible (in that order); as for servants and mind-bonded lovers, as I have said, monster reactions are unpredictable. But yes you can try!

A demon can have high Humanity. Even if they try really hard, having emotions and empathy is going to be almost impossible for them. But, note the “almost”. Persevere and you will change them significantly, it just won’t be a complete 180.

Slowly. You have already had a chance to raise your stats with them (even if you were not flirting with either.)

Okay! I think that was it for now.

Wendigos just keep reminding me of tokyo ghoul, except to gain power we don’t have to eat other Wendigos…
So if I can make my Wendigo more like my vampire I will have my perfect monster.
Hoods are the best.

Uhmm…did I miss some comments or a scene in the current demo…where did the whole “incest rumor” come from?

On another note I really like how the twins are written with a lot of similarities because of their family background yet still quite different people. With as far as I’ve seen Hunter being the more emotionally driven of the two and Artemis more controlled. One interesting thing I noticed when I compared both twins positive reaction to being kissed. Before fleeing I actually thought Hunter was talking more to himself than the MC, where Artemis was clearly yelling at the MC.

And I really shouldn’t be gleefully cackling when my nice Wendigo MC is shaking the romancable twin’s world-view by not acting like she, a monster, “should”. Plus the whole “I’m (a little/some/very) attracted to the enemy”…yes I’m looking at you Hunter, at least you could argue that your sister just went with the flow. xD

It’s one of the potential replies in your first meeting with artemis/hunter. Something about them being “close”.
