I’m familiar, yes. That’s a tricky diagnosis. Thanks for your work fighting SARS-CoV-2.
This is no doubt one of the best CoG! Very intriguing, well-written, and have high replayability! Just finished my first playthrough and will definitely play it again. There’re soooo many ways you can play which makes me a bit lost since I’m not sure which route should I do next first XD.
I must say, as an Atheist, I’m a bit worried when I first encountered the dweller cult. I was worried that the plague will end up being a work of some deity and nothing can be done unless you pray hard enough. I’m glad when I found out I could cure the Waking Death by pure logic and research, no higher being involved. For that, I applaud you, you give us no believer a route without a punishment to play while maintaining our disbelief in deity. It felt amazing ending the plague with my own mortal hands and knowledge, not that of god
I got the ending where I found the source of the plague, successfully found the cure, and opened the town again. However, I ended on bad term with Alice since I refused to tell the whole story to the baron. Is there any way to keep the information without upsetting Alice? I quite like her as a friend so it saddens me when we parted on a bad term
Also, you said in one of your reply that the crown loves the bitchy, greedy mayor, does that mean I can assume that the crown is as bad as her? If so, then I’m happier that I keep some truth to myself
I usually don’t do well with stories with large casts cuz I have trouble keeping up with names and whatnot. However, your story is one of a rare exception. Every character is well-written in such in-depth details, even minor characters that appeared once or twice. They all feel real and alive, which makes the story even more amazing!
Sorry for rambling on this long. I’m just so excited and need to find a place to let it out
I’m not that far into the game yet, I think, but I love that this option has come up twice so far.
I’m addicted to this game, it’s been a while since a story has had me so hooked that I keep wanting to continue reading between chores. The pace is great and the characters are so lovely. Well developed in my opinion. And that flow though! It’s good. My little gremlin brain really enjoys games with a story that flows nicely. I’m also learning some new English words, thanks for that.
I cannot wait to see more from this author. Keep up the good work!
Something I wanted to add: The sheer chaotic dumbass energy from some of the choices give me life. It fuels me. I love it.
For those asking about retaining Alice’s friendship in certain endings…
There is one, narrow, pathway to keeping both Ioco and Alice somewhat happy. It involves choosing to tell the Crown everything, but (in essence) not having enough to satisfy the Baron into offering you the Fellowship position. Alice respects this, because you tried your best to earn it. Ioco accepts it, because the Crown still lack a complete picture of the disease. However, it will cost you any romantic attachment you had with him (it’s still a betrayal, after all).
You’re more likely to get this outcome if Sibyl is out of power (because that can be a deal-breaker for the Fellowship job).
As for happy endings in general … well, I suppose that depends on how you feel about becoming a wood-dwelling conduit for an ancient entity or rolling the dice on a local uprising.
“Bittersweet” is a good phrase for the majority of them, really. No matter how it concludes, you’ve gone through a terrible ordeal.
Wow! This is really fantastic. There’s some tricky choices throughout that have pretty serious consequences for the story. And the low-magic setting is so interesting, I think I played a character that was very much the rational scientist, but it sounds like you can do some really interesting stuff by going a more spiritual route. I’ll probably give this a replay in a couple days!
@Ninja1 - I love that picture. It’s so applicable beyond this game.
I appreciate the bittersweet endings. Makes them more satisfying somehow. Maybe … grounded? is the word I’m looking for. Despite the option of playing a more fantastical route, you still have to deal with the plague and all that comes after. And that’s not pretty. Or something that can be wrapped up in a neat little package, despite how much we wish it was.
So the bittersweet endings combo’d with how Alice and Ioco react to your actions made this story feel grounded. It felt like these were real people, for lack of a better phrase, with their own goals, motivations, ideologies, and breaking points. The world doesn’t really bend to your actions, you have to react to the world… and it may often feel like you’re always one step behind.
You’re not the ‘main character’ in this story. Not a typical one. Or I should say… you’re not the ‘hero’ of this story. You’re just lucky enough to make it out alive with those you care about and I appreciate that kind of protagonist.
So thank you for publishing a fantastic story!
Speak for yourself… Everyone going on about how they got a “bittersweet ending” and my ending was basically “Rocks fall, everyone dies.” Except without the rocks
I think I may be doing better in my second playthrough but who knows.
Omg how did you manage to do that? ;~; I, too, didn’t want to rely on some deity and used medical theory options instead, but all I got in the end is a sketchy kinda-cure potion with side effects that doesn’t even work on everyone It just doesn’t feel satisfying enough to me and I would love to succeed as a logical and capable doctor first before trying the mystical route.
Also I love playing as a jovial character. The scene with Richard Cogg asking MC if they want to see the rabbits and they were like “I LOVE RABBITS! LET’S GOOOO” and he just “uhh I didn’t mean actual rabbits but-- alright nevermind” Yep, that’s totally me and I have 2 bunnies irl
I searched down below for the cure and rarely participated in political bs. Asking around for clues helped too. In the end, I found the cure from all tidbit information I gathered from here and there. Feel free to ask more if this is too vague
How do I get the ending where they get the fellowship? :(( Sibyl was replaced, the baron said that the info was lacking sjshehebs
To be offered the Fellowship, you need to keep Sibyl in charge. She keeps the trade route money rolling in (even though she’s clearly skimming), so the Crown like her a lot. Choose to attend the masked ball in Chapter 10 if you want to influence matters directly (even if somebody else gave you the invitation, you can always betray them and help Sibyl ) - or, if Order is pretty high and support for Couvet pretty low, you can just stay at the Sanctuary and let Sibyl beat the uprising without your help!
In addition, you’ll need to have found some sort of cure (an imperfect one can still be fine) or an inoculation (again, doesn’t have to be perfect), AND have a decent level of favor with the Crown - though if Sibyl is in power and you’ve done the rest that mostly takes care of itself I think.
Good luck!
Wow what a great game! Did my first run basically as an atheist doctor and the ending is pretty good and happy, but my favorite ending has got to be the conduit, I just like the tragic natural of it and I always like to play games from a non-human perspective, with the plus of being screwed by an god from behind.
it’s a shame though the only god we got in this game is a jerk, so someone going for the spiritual route don’t really have a lot of choices if they want a more patron of their taste . Not saying it’s bad, on the opposite the limiting factor is more realistic even. It’s just a jest on science master race, and the importance of stranger danger!
Just wondering, what are the possible “good” endings in the game?
IIRC:
Summary
Curing the plague and meeting everyone at the tavern.
Joining the Fellowship.
Alviva’s revolution.
Escaping Thornback.
I’ve just gone through this game once and I feel that the “good” ending I got was possibly one of the most satisfying endings I’ve achieved in a Choice of Game. Perhaps it’s because I just really like the idea of peasant uprisings? I sided with Alviva and the peasant revolt, went into the tunnels, found the cure, and I guess I was lucky enough for the local uprising to succeed? Apparently it’s by chance? Anyways, I don’t think Alice hates me too much in this ending, though I did betray her trust. (At least my romance was with Ioco, who by the way is an incredibly interesting character!)
Overall, one of my favourite Choice of Games I’ve played. Thank you for such an interesting journey!
I’m sorry for the spoiler thing I forgot how to do something in spoilers so I write as little as possible
@Urban That’s about right, I’d say (again, unless you consider merging/being subsumed by a strange elder entity a life goal). There’s also the niche ending where you are offered the Fellowship but opt to reject it - you’re left on poor terms with Ioco, and ambivalent ones with Alice, but you saved the town and can find happiness with Lucia, or heading off on your own.
Depending on the circumstances, escaping can be ambiguous. I wrote at least one version where it may be the case that you/others will be spreading the disease.
@ct1618 Thanks! And thanks for making your first post here one about enjoying my game Regarding one thing you said about your ending, if you get the option to launch the uprising in Chapter 12, then you met the conditions for it to succeed - it’s not chance. I think maybe my “rolling the dice” comment was a bit vague. I just mean that the ultimate outcome (in the epilogue) is uncertain, because the position of the revolt is still fragile etc.
Really pleased somebody got that conclusion, it’s one of my favourites!
Where’s my good ending? I got few different endings but I don’t think they’re considered good ending
Did you find the source? Did you make the good inoculation? Did you make the good cure?
You need at least 2 of those 3 to get a good ending.
Yeah…I have done everything good…but the endings were not black and white…they are grey… that’s what I meant by not getting good ending…you will lose something for every ending
