Welcome to Lords of Ashes, a WIP interactive fiction game set in a low-fantasy medieval world.

DESCRIPTION

The grand Kingdom of Bavária is breaking. The crown is sick. As a brutal winter chokes the land, the eleven duchies turn on one another. In this landscape of shifting allegiances and rot, the political order isn’t just crumbling, it’s burning, and only the ashes will remain.

While the story begins through the eyes of Eros in this Prologue, his journey is merely the spark that ignites the flame. Following this introduction, the perspective will shift, and you will take command of the story as a female lead, shaping her path through the crumbling political ruins of the eleven provinces.

Dev Update \\\[02\\\] - January 04, 2026

The journey continues. In this update, my primary focus has been pushing the prologue forward, not just in length, but in depth. I’ve overhauled the existing choice structures and added subtle nuances to several key scenes to ensure every interaction feels meaningful and reactive.

As a result, we’ve already surpassed the 13k word mark. This progress has made it clear that the prologue will be far more expansive than originally anticipated, leading me to adjust my final word count goals to match its new scale.

New Features & Improvements:

  • Expanded Choices & Divergent Paths: The dialogue between Eros and Darius has been rewritten for deeper reactivity. Your choices now carry more weight, including a new “Grey Path” for those who prefer to play a cautious game rather than inviting open confrontation;
  • Narrative Progression: The story marches forward. I have finalized the next sequence of the prologue, Eros have started his journey to the Golden Citadel;
  • MC Customization: Character personalization has been expanded; players can now define the MC’s first name, further anchoring your identity within the world of Bavaria.

Worldbuilding

I’ve dedicated a significant portion of my development time structuring the world of Lords of Ashes;

Kingdom of Bavária

I’ve been focusing in developing the Kingdom inner structures:

Kingdom of Bavária Political System

I’ve defined it’s main political system: a constitutional monarchy.

Kingdom of Bavária Army

I’ve been conducting extensive research to define the inner workings of the kingdom’s army, from its rigid hierarchy to its tactical doctrines;

The Grand Curia of Bavária

The high Council of Bavaria resides within the Curia. It is a realm where the King reigns, but the Curia dictates the law. Its seats are reserved exclusively for the high nobility, those with enough prestige and ancient lineage to command a voice.

The Road Ahead:

  • Prologue Completion: My goal is to have the full Prologue finished by the end of January.

  • Word Count Goal: The completed prologue is expected to reach approximately 60,000 words, offering deep branching paths and significant replayability.

Dev Update \\\[01\\\] - December 31, 2025

I’m thrilled to share an update on the manual translation and adaptation of Lords of Ashes. The transition into ChoiceScript is moving forward at full speed, and the prologue is becoming more visceral and reactive than ever.

New Features & Improvements:

  • Expanded Character Reactivity: I’ve overhauled the interaction between Eros and the mysterious mercenary. Your choices now carry more weight, leading to unique outcomes, from lethal standoffs to tense power plays;

  • MC Customization: The MC (mysterious rider) customization suite is fully integrated. Your choices regarding her height, eye color, and hair style are available.

  • Ongoing Refinement in MC Customization: While the core customization is integrated, it is still being polished and expanded. I expect to refine the descriptions to ensure every trait feels impactful, and additional customization options will be added throughout the remaining parts of the prologue to further define your character.

  • Word Count Goal: The completed prologue is expected to reach approximately 30,000 words, offering deep branching paths and significant replayability.

INSPIRATIONS

The Inspiration Behind Lords of Ashes

Lords of Ashes is heavily inspired by A Song of Ice and Fire, commonly known for the TV Series Game of Thrones, Bernard Cornwell and J. R. R. Tolkien. As a long-time fan of Hosted Games, my primary influence for this adaptation is the Infinity Saga (Paul Wang)

As it is, Lords of Ashes were supposed to be a book, the project began early this year. Now, its being translated and adapted into a branching, interactive format.

(Note: Originally written in Brazilian Portuguese, this game is being manually adapted and translated into English)

Incredibly gripping start. I had gone into it blind so I didn’t realise the woman on the horse was our MC, however it was fun once I realised. Seeing through Eros’ eyes is very interesting since I played him as calm, sympathetic (to his cousin) but still a noble who looks down on impropriety and the way he shut down the MC’s attempts to provoke him was so well done I felt like a nobleman. And seeing his varied reactions to our character being built was a nice touch.

You gave that one character a lot of nuance through my choices alone and such a short prologue, I can’t wait to see what you did with the story and low-key hope we can choose Eros as an RO because the tension is already fun.

I’m so glad you liked it! I plan to put more weight on the choices you make with Eros, so that the personality you build for him shapes his future intentions with the MC. Rest assured, both he and Darius are definitely ROs, though you might find yourself liking some of the other characters I’ll be adding in the next chapters :eyes:.
