Life of a Mobster (WIP)

Haha @aera

How’s it hanging no-belt tommy @fallingcups

I just misread the title as Life of a Lobster. :stuck_out_tongue: Be oh so glad that I’m too busy to start making puns. I’m now thinking Sharky and George.

Haha

@FairyGodfeather maybe you’ll be sleeping with the fishes? I just had to say that…

I would love to see a mafia game.

Having grown up in inner city Chicago, I have seen first hand what ‘gangs’ are like. The stereotypes presented here are not always true. I would even say that more times than not, that stereotype is not true.

It is all organized crime, just different scale. Without going on a tangent, I suppose defining the Mafia as a more sophisticated gang would be accurate, in my book. Nowadays, I suspect the mafia has their hands in unions’ cookie jars though.

Regardless, I would love to see a game like this. I will be following your progress.

@redgrave Nice. I get hilighted threads sent through email, so I sometimes read one post at a time. I was planning to give your reply before I read yours.

@gameover I agree, I went overboard on the stereotypes on purpose. I’m hoping there’ll be enough fans for the topic.

@Lucid really, I’d be surprised if anybody wasn’t thinking it! I like the idea of it being similar to Life of a Wizard, but do you think you’ll be able to fit as many stats in? I can remember how many Life of a Wizard had, and to me that made it really fun- seeing how many stats I could max out, etc.

I think it will feel like less stats, but hopefully in a good way.

One set for skills (similar), one set for factions (similar), but not a knowledge set (combined into the skill set instead), but it will have a new set for relationships with the characters.

The NPCs will be more like real characters, but you’ll have less control of creating them. That’s the tradeoff for characters you’ll end up caring about.

I’m also aiming for less of a push for max relationships for people and factions, rewarding both ends of the spectrum for those.

The Mafia are italian only people say it but its wrong you dont get mafia in other countries e.g. Brothish mafia doesnt exist its just what people call orgamised crome groups

@Ausar

that’s right. Mafia refers to Italian gangsters. Yakuza are the Japanese equivalent.

But I thought that mafia can also refer to russian gangsters.

Mafioso is Italian. It originally referred only to the Sicilian mafia. But now it’s used for all sorts of organized crime. To be a made man you had to trace both parents back to Sicily and be male.

Other popular mobsters include Yakuza (Japanese), Triad (Chinese), Serbian, Indian, Albanian and on and on…

Life of Mobster will feel like the traditional Sicilian Mafia, like the Godfather movies, Sopranos, Goodfellas and so on.

I’ve removed the Italian from it and you can be a woman. I’ve taken the glory days of the 70s and put it into an ambiguous present day in a fictional city in the US.

It’s off to a good start.

This seems to be an amazing idea, and after recently watching Baccano! I can safely say that I am very much looking forward to this.

My website has hit 100 likes! Have you liked it yet?

Hey, if I can’t self-promote in my own WIP thread, where can I?

Too true
go @Lucid

This game has not died! Far from it, it’s getting close to completion.

I posted my day-to-day updates through the NaNoWriMo thread, but it seems silly to continue to do so at this point, so I’ll post in my WIP thread instead.

The rough draft is done! I’m currently editing. I need to:

  1. Finish reading and editing the game for spelling and grammar.

  2. Go through it looking just for variable increases and recording the results.

  3. Go through it looking just for variable requirements, using the balanced results from #2.

  4. Implement an easy save system, for testing, which I’ll remove before release.

  5. Alpha test it a little more myself.

I have Monday (today), Thursday and Friday. The kids are in daycamp and my wife is at work. So, it’s a couple minutes to 9am, I’m going to get some writing done!

If everything goes according to plan, I think I can begin Beta Testing this Friday.

Wish me luck!

Luck! i wanna beta test it badly :(( so start writing like a mad

Yaay Good job @lucid hope it’s as good or better than life of a wizard

Awesome! Good work, @Lucid

Day Two of the three day binge. I seem to be on track so far. My goal of having Beta start Friday night seems to be on schedule. The editing process is taking a while, but I’m finding lots of little errors that my beloved beta testers won’t have to trifle with.
