A more funny if not accurate quote for all you writers!
If only it was that easy…
Do you ever squash a particularly evil bug and feel like you’ve conquered a nation? Because that happened to me today.
I gotta tell ya, it was a better feeling than graduation and my birthday combined.
Just be careful not to accidentally reintroduce the bug later by using old code … I’ve done that little trick before.
@Eiwynn
Love this thread.
I finally decided to write a choice game
Cause I loved the wayhaven series, the hero project series, samurai of hyuga series etc
But I’m new to writing and the book is in a horror, supernatural genre
And I don’t know how many people read those ♂
So it kind of seems like a far cry
And yes choosing the title is not easy
To me Supernatural feels trendy. And even though horror is not my thing, it is to game authors like this:
And now you just have to write it. Best wishes.
Thanks…
and
Yes Supernatural is pretty trendy ♂:bowing_man:♂
I did it, I pushed my latest update! Only 5 months after the previous one lol. I’m so happy, even immediately obvious bugs can’t get me down. Its been a whirlwind of activity but a few weeks ago I just got the writing bug again. Hopefully I can now work on completly new stuff in the next chapter, hooray!
Shameless plug: Holy Ordos WIP [a Warhammer 40k inspired game] [updated v0.4.1, 2020/08/05]
It is a good advice. I’ll try to finish a first chapter. Maybe with luck I’ll be able to do it. I’m not measuring words because in my case it could be deceiving.
Since I’m not good at coding, It could probably be optimized. This thread is being really useful to learn, so thanks to everyone.
By the way, the WIP that I’ve been trying look amazing. Kind of intimidating to post mine after them. XD
Hmm, what to measure, now that I’m back into writing fresh content?
I finished chapter 10 and started chapter 11. I went back and forth a lot, but in the end, I’ve settled on 13 chapters. Although chapter 11 will be short, I think it’s worth getting it’s own heading since it’s such a big event.
Of course, in the end, I may end up pulling out the chapter numbers before release. I’ll have to see how things feel.
I suspect chapter 11 will be a little shorter than normal, but chapter 12 will be as long as it needs, and 13 will include all of the endings (at last count, there were 21 endings, but that may grow or shrink once I actually get there) although the reusable bits will make the actual length very tricky to predict.
I honestly cant see this wrapping up without another 50k, so I’ll use that number. I don’t see myself stopping until it’s done (the summer is wide open now!). So, if this support thread continues (and I really hope it does) then I’ll just continue this same count.
So, that means 4,374/50,000 which should be the end? Sure, why not.
This got me, thx!
I draw inspiration from music. Sometimes I will do writing sprints standing up with dance music playing and I will even bop around whole I write.
Having a very productive week. I did about 3000 words today including a lot of coding.
July Update Two: “Make a Vertical Slice Demo Month Three.”
- First draft of the demo is now complete. Scripting did not take as long as I thought it would.
– Stats-screen seems to be up and running; it is basic and utilitarian, but it covers everything I need it to for the core game.
Now the debugging and fixes begin. I can think of a few off the top of my head already, so I know it is a long road ahead. It is the final road to getting the demo ready, but the end has just begun.

I will be opening a new one each month; the thread is one of the best in our community (imo), so of course I want to continue it
I used to do this as well, but I actually listen to music less than I once did.
That is great – I usually can not combine writing and coding together, unless it is a fix or bug squash being performed.
This is the most important first step … everything else will fall into place as you get more confidence and experience.
@Novachrome – Welcome to the thread. My advice is to listen to your heart, especially for your first project. Finishing is the most important thing.
@Alice-chan – good to see your follow through. Well done this month
@Cecilia_Rosewood – Great to see you1 I hope your life is stable enough to take up writing again. I still fondly remember your prisoner on a spacecraft story
@MonkeyLottery good to see you too
I’m trying a different way of writing this time, doing a ‘vertical slice’ like Eiwynn mentioned and filling out the game from there instead of chapter by chapter.
I’m not sure if this game idea is going to pan out at all so I’m trying choices one by one. I’m trying to make a game where you’re a kind of emotional vampire/fairy being, and all of your special powers come from your relationship stats. So you spend most of the time trying to get people to like you, but then every time you use that stat the relationship goes down. You can be friends with everyone if you lose everything and get your butt kicked, or you can be powerful and have no friends.
So I’m trying choices like (in a friendly fight with Francesca):
*fake_choice
#I settle myself like a rock and toss her away. (Uses Brad)
#I outmanuever who with speed. (Uses Dieter)
#I gain insight into her strategy, and predict her moves. (Uses Inez)
#I refuse to fight back. (Lowers Francesca)
#I fight the best I can without assistance (Increases your wounds).
I don’t think it will work out but writing again is fun!
The whole idea of the Slice of Life is to explore a concept then see if you can deploy it in a way that works – “failure” at this stage can actually lead you to bigger break-throughs and at the very least, let you see where you need to focus your creative energies on.
This is a dangerous road to travel … in my experience, such a double dichotomy is very hard to pull off in such a way that any of the four “total” losses don’t break your audience. Some of the designers I know set out to do this, and ended up softening the losses with silver-linings that were a sort of “win” that could be latched on to.
Regardless! I am looking forward to hearing how this works out.
That’s very helpful! That’s why I reached out for feedback early on. This gives me ideas
@Eiwynn Thank you. I’m glad it is remembered
Still practicing the technical aspects of writing for now, especially plotting, worldbuilding, natural feeling dialogue, body language (that stuff is a pain,) and how to transition from dialogue to description, but I have posted some fanfiction snippets for Fallen Hero recently. Currently working on something for the original Mass Effect trilogy while I play the games again.
Got nothing done yet due to toothache. Lots of reading tho.
I’m currently using a hybrid approach. I’m working in Hong Kong Blood Opera chapter by chapter except for one of my arcs which I’ve “set to one side” for now. When I finish the game I’ll weave in Kingdom of Shadow Arc (it’s weird and self contained) in with the final work.
