I completed my monthly goal early so now im thinking about going back with the vampire stuff and actually start thinking of a plot.
I tend to pulll from known aspects of non fiction to make characters, plot and such so Im gonna do the trifecta of a bio vampire, modern salem witches and navajo skinwalkers.
Would need an antagonist, like an ultron or terminator manipulating tech, controlling those with cybernetics.
Oh make it a persuasive one. Romancable as well. Gender choice maybe? Otherwise a woman since current assistant ai are women too. Have an inferior version help create the bio vampire.
Ok so AI antagonist is gonna be so easy to plan out.
Honestly I just had the biggest, dumbest, mind-blown moment. Like, why do I do this for MC and not the gender variable characters LOL That feeling of enlightenment after complete idiocy is amazing.
Honestly, the more I write. The more I ask myself which is more worth it, the choices that this medium presents or actions that push the story itself/what I want to tell.
Like I want to do something in my wip to prove a point, not at the player but the player character themselves, to show something to the player. It’s better to show than tell, but this point will remove a bit of critical player choice and can lead to a false choice.
I am probably going to do it, because I love torturing my characters, but that’s besides the point.
Hi all. As the month looms to an end I am happy to say that I managed to actually clear the 10K goal I set for this month even with it being as busy as it was! (and busy as I was playing the other WIPs)
Hopefully everyone else manages to clear their goals in these last few days as well.
Seeing the range of floods, storms, occasionaly tornadoes and what have thee that others have to deal with does at times make me glad I live in a relatively stable if boringly weather coded place. Little rain. No snow. At worst its a desert storm but those tend to not really do much if I am not going outside. Just worse vision and air quality. Things thankfully prevented by closing the window.
Yeah that is sort of why I almost immediately decided that I will institute a no looking back policy unless I get an error explicitly pointed out to me. If I keep going back I will keep wanting to change and alter it to make it “better” and end up making no progress at all on the actual draft. Perfect is the enemy of good enough and unlike good enough. Perfect doesn’t exist. It’s like fighting the monkey’s paw.
My only general worry is that It is seeming like I may not be able to find the time to include a Non-binary choice for the MC. I’ve been looking at other game’s codes to see how they go about it and It’s a process that’s going to take a while to go back and redo to make the writing properly refer to them. This is not including the general factor of how I’d make it different given a bit of inexperience on my end and how I decided to make the gender the player chooses open and close certain routes. It could just be that because the whole thing isn’t finished yet I am overestimating the time it’ll take since the word count can be theoretically infinite at this stage but maybe once finished I can more easily just go back and do the tedious but finite work of making sure every paragraph properly refers to an NB MC.
Somehow I both get and do not get what this means.
“I gained the power to make everything I can think of become true. Which sounds great until you remember it comes with a drawback where everything I can think of becomes true.”
Also found some open source programs I absolutely must try out.
i personally am not a huuuge fan of PCs who get ’tortured’ by the author in a way that removes the character’s agency, BUT i know a good chunk of readers who do love that specific phenomenon. as long as you have your intentions for the story clear enough in mind write it well, i think you’ll be just fine!
I had to do so much storm prep and we’ve been SLAMMED by the storm (currently 17 inches on the ground and still going!) I have not been able to do anything the last two days (which I am not happy about).
Have you ever had those moments where you’re lying in bed, you know you need to go to bed, but you really just want to get up and on ChoiceScript because there’s so much to be done and you feel a need to do it?
That’s been the last two days. Except like every single minute of every hour, lol.
Finally forcing myself to stop procrastinating and sit down and work out a (first pass) at a stats system for my current project.
Is there a word that describes skill in hand-to-hand fighting?
‘Hand-to-Hand Fighting’ is a bit long. I’ve seen others use ‘Melee’, but I wonder if the meaning would be clear. Plus, it starts with M, and I’d prefer not to have two skills starting with the same letter if I can avoid it. There’s ‘Fisticuffs’, but for some reason – and it might be an entirely me issue – I can’t take the word fisticuffs seriously.
Additionally, I cannot believe I’m typing this, but I’m considering putting in a drink choice. Two, actually: one alcoholic and one between coffee and tea. I’m not sure I can bring myself to do the latter. Would it be a cop out to contrive things so non-alcoholic beverages never come up/are never specified? Probably. Maybe I won’t make it a choice: the PC is always a tea-hating black coffee fanatic. They’re not supposed to be a self-insertable PC, so I don’t know how much people would even care.
Perhaps ‘Brawling’? If I’m remember old rpg character sheets correctly, the World of Darkness sheet had ‘Brawl’ and ‘Melee’ to represent hand to hand combat and then swordfighting etc. respectively.
Maybe “Unarmed” such as in the Elder Scrolls games?
When it comes to drink choice… I don’t think it matters terribly, but there are plenty of people who would like the choice of drinking alcohol or not – or maybe more specifically, of being sober or not.
Lots of good options given already, but I’d say choose whichever word best fits your story setting. If you’re doing a story about a Victorian era gentleman, then ‘fisticuffs’ fits, if it’s a medieval knight then ‘melee’, and so forth. The main things are making it very clear what a skill does and that the skill sounds appropriate to the setting. I don’t think a skill starting with the same letter is really a problem you need to worry about.
Work has resumed following a weekend storm on A Realm Divided. I’m poking around location tech this morning, and by the end of the day the game should fully know where you are at all times and be able to report that data to let you move through differing environments and return to them.
In addition, I am working on the fast travel systems for when you want to return to major locations for farming purposes, getting certain location limited materials, and more. This will operate through a Mirage Access Point (MAP) in any major location. Upon first discovery, you will gain the ability to access that area remotely at almost anytime.
In order to make this work, we need Estheria to understand not only where you are, but where you’ve been. This involves the game remembering your last five locations for any purpose that may involve distance travel. Separately, I’m building failsafes to ensure travel works smoothly. Say you’re far away from where you need to begin a quest, every quest has functions built into their code that when triggered inject updated travel data and initiate a MAP travel sequence before beginning the quest. This allows you to freely move through the realm without restriction and without bugs.
I’ve already used small tests of this concept in the Frontier minus the quest injections, so I’ve got a solid basis for how this will go.
I imagine I’ll spend the day on the travel system as development is approaching Stones Hollow which will allow for open travel to multiple areas.
When Update 1 launches, the codebase will be open for review, so anyone who wants to see how systems like these work will be more than welcome to!
I mean, it could. It’s less likely to get two skills confused than two NPCs, but it you want to do some coding or other thing where you’d like to refer to them with the first letter only…
