Hello everyone! You can call me RR. After years of being a big reader of CoG stories, I finally decided to take a plunge and try to write my own titled:
In the Wake of the Devil
You wake up after a long and refreshing slumber to the same world you have known for your entire existence. Yet… is it the same? Something seems… fundamentally off.
No matter— with all this power in your hands nothing could possibly go wrong.
About the game:
In this book, there are two major romantic interests, both are romance-able by all gender identities. You can approach the romance for these two characters in two ways: hedonistic connection or romantic connection.
There are several more minor romantic interests in the story, but their paths are only accessible if you do not romance the two major love interests or you do romance them through a hedonistic connection.
This story is told through the perspectives of many different characters, but major decisions are only made through the POV of the player character.
This book can be classified as a power fantasy, but the plan is to deviate from that once we get to later books.
In the Wake of the Devil contains graphic violence, profanity and light sexual content
Love Interests
Silas Velcryst d’reyr Lazarin
The vampire race was created for you by one of your god friends, though you never found out if they were given to you as a gift or a practical joke. Silas is the greatest of all vampires having lived through countless battles alongside you. He is your caretaker and the one who manages your realm. Prim and effortlessly(or so he wants you to believe) proper, he is devoted to fulfilling your every need without question. But is that all he is to you? Or will the changing world push you to finally appreciate him as more than your manservant?
Rydinarch of Vixtah
Rydinarch, or better known as Rydeen, is a human you have blessed with immortal life. She is the leader of your realm’s fighting force and had endured many great wars beside you and Silas. Before your previous slumber, Rydeen suddenly vanished, leaving her armor, her weapon and her shield behind. Her disappearance was one of the bigger reasons why you went to sleep when you did, but when you got out of your slumber, you receive news that Rydeen is serving as the champion of a human nation. And she does not remember anything about her past.
This story has a lot of lore and depth to it that I found really fun. I can tell you out a lot of thought into it, and the relationships feel genuine between people. And I’m excited to see more of where it goes, especially since MC is such a powerful figure in this world. Also, I’m so curious on where our friend disappeared to.
A few things I noticed:
Summary
It felt really long in some parts. There’s so few choices and so much text that it reads more like Game of Thrones with all of the scene changes, and less like an interactive story.
Also, when our vampire woke up and said they “were so confused” and kind of glancing around like a drunk, it slapped me out of the character because they were so… lame?? I don’t know if that’s the right word. But it was just jarring that this OP vampire was so… openly confused around enemies?? I get that they’ve been dead asleep, but I’m sure they’ve fought in wars and killed lots of people to get where they are, so they could be less obvious. And with how chill they were with what are basically disrespectful grave robbers who might have killed their loyal servant, it was a little strange.
I’m looking forward to future updates! It’s not often you get to play as a vampire yourself unless it’s the WOD series, and even then we’re usually underdogs. Thank you for sharing
Minor coding mistake in Chapter 1 I caught when the knight woke up:
Summary
“Peace, sir knight. I mean you no harm. You have already passed my master’s trial— unless you commit some grievous offense against him, then we are no longer enemies.”
I’m loving it so far! It’s been mentioned before so I’m only reiterating: this WIP is good, but it would be nice to have a little more interactivity. Maybe add some choices here and there so we don’t just scroll through long pages of texts. It’ll also make readers feel more involved. Maybe add some choices during the fight with Lysander? Things like that. Ultimately, it’s your decision though. Congrats on putting your WIP out!
I like the WIP, I’m looking forward to where this is headed.
Will we get the option to choose our relationship with Silas and Rydinarch in the past or will it be that they were just our servants plain and simple and any more significant relationship with them will be new to us, also what chapter would you say we’ll reunite with Rydeen in?
The one who says “I’m so confused” isn’t the vampire but the PC. That’s because they aren’t able to correlate feeling so well rested then finding mortals in their sanctum who actually cut their sleep short. It’s like one of those instances we felt like we’ve had the best sleep ever and then look at the clock and we’ve only been asleep for two hours
I’ll keep that in mind in future content! Though I don’t think that can be helped when playing through a different character’s perspective.
To an extent, yes. There’s an existing dynamic between the three of them. I can say though, that you will be able to choose if you’d slept with them in the past or if you’ve had any “stared into each other’s eyes” moment before.
Chapter 4? 5? I’m not sure yet, as there are storylines I’m thinking of squeezing in between. So I’ll say Chapter 6 at the latest.
Bug/issue, selected nonbinary and at least in the initial scenes before waking (not much further beyond that so I can’t necessarily say if that continues) it entirely treated my character as a woman. I mean, that’s my other possible option but it isn’t what I selected so probably unintentional
Only two choices and more other character’s POV than MC’s made me feel a bit like I was reading a “normal” fantasy book. But it was a good read nonetheless, I liked it very much. Definitely a promising wip.
