IFcomp 2025 is live! Free games to play!

IFcomp is an annual celebration of new, text-driven digital games and stories from independent creators, as well as one of the most prestigious contests in the IF world. Judging runs from now to Oct 15.

This year, we have one entry written in Choicescript, from one of our own authors @Jacic . We also have a twine entry by another of our authors, @Stewart_Baker , a prequel to Spire, Surge and Sea. Anyone can be a judge! Do feel free to play the games and participate in the judging. All entries are free to play. If you wish to judge the entries, you will need to create a free account on the IFcomp website and play/rate at least five entries, but the more the better!

Of course, if you prefer to put your new CS entry in a contest without the brutality of contest rankings, there is always next year’s Spring Thing. Comp entries are still eligible for publication under CoG/HG.

Note on geoblocking for UK users

Some entries have apparently been geoblocked in the UK due to legislation which was passed there. If you are in the UK, you might not be able to access some entries. I am not entirely sure how the lines were drawn in determining which games would be affected. In any event, you can read more about it on the forum thread here or the blog post here.

There’s 85 games in a mixture of parser and choice (twine, choicescript etc) so highly recommend checking it out

Unfortunately both my and @Stewart_Baker 's games are currently geoblocked for the UK due to the internet safety act they have going on there that prohibits a lot of things (blocked games do not necessarily contain any “bad” or explicit content).

I might be able to push an update in the next week or so to address the issue in my game that might allow it to abide by the act and be unblocked, but unfortunately at the moment it may be inaccessible for the time being if you are in the UK.

There are still lots of other games though, even if you’re in the UK, so do recommend having a look. (I believe at least 50 games are unaffected, and if you’re outside of the UK it’s running as usual.)

My game this year is Crescent Sea Story, a sort-of distant prequel to Spire, Surge and Sea written in Twine. It’s likely to stay geoblocked in the UK if you go through the official IFComp listing, but it’s hosted on my website where there is no such thing.

I played Crescent Sea Story many times in the last couple weeks. It can definitely be played in the United States.

I’ve also put up a second hosting of my game here. (It’s the same version as IFComp). Hope everyone has been enjoying all the entries up this year! Please consider voting for your favorites or leaving a comment on the IFComp ballot. It really helps the authors to know their games are being played

Just a few more days to play and rate IFComp entries, if you’re wanting to do that sort of thing!

There is a thread on the IntFiction forums pointing folks to games that seem under-reviewed.

The competition closes to voting by the end of the day on October 15th, with winners announced typically a few days after.

Wow that’s crept up on me! Thanks for the reminder. I’ll see if I can get in another game in before it closes
