Small writing update (9/9/18) -
Nothing much to report other than it’s back on track after some struggles. I was trying to force a very lengthy scene (or rather a series of scenes that were increasing the workload) that I really didn’t have the motivation to work on. I finally accepted the scene wasn’t vital and was just slowing progress. I did like the idea so I’m keeping a backup in case I find I can finish it and work it in properly, though.
With that out of the way, work on chapter one is resuming. Which I’m prioritizing over Tumblr asks because I have like, 60 of them and they’re basically all asking for all 8 ROs, which is the kind of work that’ll take away from me working on actual canon content.
Do any of you experience executive dysfunction? I struggle with it everyday and I know solutions kind of have to be tailored to individual situations but I wonder if there’s anything specific anyone can recommend trying to help.
Hell, for me, just cutting and pasting that one scene into a different document to forget about makes me feel like a weight has been taken off and i feel motivated, which lines up with something else I’ve seen someone say about their executive dysfunction (that I can’t find anymore…)
Anyway, before I forget what I started this comment for, I have something bothering me at the back of my mind. Would you guys prefer choices to define your sexuality and gender (beyond the initial one in the prologue)?
Let me elaborate. Sexuality - I let the ROs state what their sexualities are (some of them anyway, if it feels natural to the scene) to avoid them being labeled as simply “playersexual” because bi/pan/queer/etc representation is also important. I’ve been wondering if I should allow the player to do the same for their MC, if just for the proper sake of it. This question really became prominent in my mind because of an anon on tumblr asking if you can be asexual and the answer is you don’t have to sex if you don’t want to, but I hadn’t any plans to put the MC’s sexuality into words.
The problem there is the MC doesn’t have the words for it at the start anyhow. If they learn any words like pansexual, asexual, homosexual, etc etc, that’d be later in the game. Naturally, I don’t have have to use such specific words, of course. Still, sexual attraction isn’t really a priority at this point of the story and that’s why I’m asking. Would it even be worth it answering that later in the story or would it be too awkward/out of place/too late to have any effect if I wait so long to ask such a question?
- Yes, I want the option even if it’s late in the game.
- No, it would be pointless at that point.
- I don’t care either way.
- I don’t care as long as I can romance the one I want to.

Next: Gender. I already have the option in the prologue of being male, female, or non-binary. This is especially about the male and female options, but could end up being about non-binary as well.
Right now, as it is, there are the options to choose your gender and the game doesn’t assume anything about you (beyond pronouns that the initial choice implies). It doesn’t know if you are cis, if you’re just addressed the way you are because you don’t care, or if you’re trans. I was wondering if I should include an option later to define that, in a similar style to Fallen Hero. But I don’t want to include the option of realizing you’re trans later in the game because, unlike FH, this option would also be later in the story and there would be no early indication that you could be questioning your gender. So not only might it feel kinda out of nowhere, but I also don’t know if such a choice would get much traction since I’m not sure how many trans players would want to play as a gender they don’t want to for half the story just so they can play as the right gender later. (Especially if I go for the former of just defining later if you’re trans or not)
I know some trans players like playing as trans characters and it might be nice to have that canonically validated rather than just headcanoned for their MC. What do you think?
- I’d like the option to define that, even later in the game.
- Just leave it as is, i.e. the game not assuming anything

(And by not assuming anything, I want to clarify I mean it doesn’t assume anything about your physical sex based on the initial gender choice. The game will always not assume anything about you (like personality or abilities) based on your gender and will continue to not do so even if I include the choices I mentioned)
