Highlands, Deep Waters [Released]

Oh! So sorry that you went through it! I forgot to activate the proper variable there(the one that points out you know the location of the place), it was one of the last fixes I did on the prologue today. It should be working in the next minutes.

It was one of the few things I did after the last random test, so there shouldn’t be more bugs of this kind… I hope.

No worries, I didn’t mind, call me weird but I was starting to wonder if that was meant to happen. Considering the mythos and the fact I was playing a paranoid character and the lack of an error message I thought maybe I’d gotten stuck in an insanity loop. Anyway, thanks for the quick fix, I’ll get right back into checking out the new content.

Not only I would’ve thought the same if that happened to me, we’ve actually put something like that on C2, haha.

Ha, ha, I guess great (disturbed :yum:) minds think alike. I got through the content and you were right, it was a huge update! I kept expecting it to cut off and was pleasantly surprised when I was allowed to continue investigating. I love what you did with the prologue system, how everything your predecessor knew factors into the first chapter. I was wonder if that would happen, and it convinced me to do thorough playthroughs because I didn’t want future me to think past me was a loser. The only major error I noticed was some a name being replaced with Unknown, Unknown. It occurred a couple of times, I think definitely during the investigation at Dawning Street. Thanks for a great read!

Ohh im so happy to see the update ^-^ and kinda embarrassed because I can’t manage to guess Alexander’s address(clearly I’m not so good in this things… lol) can you please tell me or give me some hint? I’m dying to read the rest of the update.
Edith: nevermind, i figured out( forgot to ask our acquaintance after guessing it)

A very fulfilling update, however if you’ve already exhausted one of your friends during the adress decryption or even before the guessing, the option to ask anyone is not available. Was this intentional?
Apart from that I enjoyed the second investigation immensely, so much is still left in the dark yet I do not feel frustrated at the fact. I find that can be hard to balance sometimes~
Anyhow, great update!

This game was really fun! I liked the style overall, and it seems really polished. Just one thing: in the prologue, if I try to tell Alexander my name’s Jack, it ends up saying my name’s Douglas in the Stats. Is that intentional, or just a bug?

I found an error, you can’t open case notes after the second MC talks to Alexander. Also, i hope you’ll implement a save system since i died way too many times and it’s hard to start from the beginning  One more question, is it possible for second MC to talk to former MCs contact in this update (they are only mentioned by Alexander, I don’t know, maybe i missed it)

Thank you. Perhaps it is some weird interaction with the ${fullName} var, I’ll try to pinpoint this one. Could have something to do with choosing to give your real or fake name, too. It shouldn’t appear that way, of course. I’ll look into it, but I believe it might get some time on fixing that since it’s probably spread all across the files.

One of the areas you could reuse to get the code (checking the internet forums) wasn’t available after the first use. I changed that and also provided a new way to get tips for the puzzle: each time you try to solve it, a new tip appears.

I had changed it but forgotten to apply the new value properly. It should be working now. Sorry about that.

Hmmm… There was something out of place there(an indentation problem) and I changed it. I tested it here, talked to Alexander until after I accepted the case and it seems to be working now. Sorry about it.

We definitely need this. I did some research and if I recall correctly, it was said somewhere that this is provided by the folk at Choice of Games eventually, if they accept the game. There’s also some alternative tutorial I saw a glimpse of somewhere around here. I don’t know if that will work here or how exactly we can implement it on the game, but we MUST do it at some point.

They are actually very important plot points. They’ll appear again during Chapter Two(we’ve considering putting them on Chapter One, but it was big enough already), and have a great impact on it. Until then, they are mostly only mentioned.

Thank you all for the feedback!

Also, I have a question for you guys! Has anyone been through the Interlude, after Chapter One is over, or it just jumps to Chapter Two?

The Interlude should only appear if you do a very specific thing during the prologue. (Drink from the RIGHT bottle on the Lone Manse on the tea room, before going downstairs).

We are actually trying to figure out how rare it is for it to appear, and we’re discussing if it’s worth to keep it as an easteregg or to implement more ways that can lead to that outcome.

EDIT: I recommend anyone who is going through a second play through to either do a hard refresh in your browser or paste the link on a private/incognito tab, as dashingdon told me to do when the files weren’t updating to me.

Ok, there’s some error when i stab Evan(i think his name is Evan?) Well, while in pain, he dropped the broken bottle on the floor so he wouldn’t be able to cut my throat. If this is not true, I’m really not sure how to end this fight without me dying.

Yeah, i’ve got the interlude. It is quite awesome and I’m happy to see my first MC plotting revenge insert maniacal laugh here.
Also, during chapter 1 there were some mistakes (protagonist was called he instead of she; some problems with pathing etc. ) but overall the update is interesting and I can’t wait to know what happens next.

“myBalls” HAHAHAHA! That was supposed to be a label, LOL

I will look into it, but its definitely misplaced.

There are lots of way this fight can start.
You can sneak on him if you don’t make any sound while entering the house, you can be noticed as soon as you enter the room, you can be surprised by him when you enter… And then there’s the fight itself, that can go many ways too.

Your case, in particular, to reach that exactly point, you have to:

 1. Have the archetype Criminal

 2. Choose to grab your knife

 3. Choose to stab him in the genitals

And then it would have been okay, if not for this pesky bug.

In most cases, though, there will be some point where he grabs another bottle(there are many in his room) and tries to go again at you. So the bug that happened to you must be a mix of the label not existing plus the fight continuing in a bad way, I believe.
Sorry about it and thanks for the feedback.

EDIT: It should be fixed by now.

I will try to find the instances where the gender pronoun is used incorrectly. Can you give more details on the pathing problems you’ve noticed? Thank you for the feedback.

I think these mistakes are on me! We have been busy with coding and bug-seeking-and-destroying lately, so I have been delaying a full grammar/style revision of Chapter 1. It should be done during the next few days, and we’ll let you guys know when it’s done.

Thank you all for playing it! And if you guys have any suggestion on what do you want to see in the game, just let us know

What will the obtainable weapons in the game be? Also, I’m obsessed with this game. :joy:

We don’t have that completely settled yet. Any specific weapon you would like to see?

If you are speaking of stuff like pistols I got an idea. Hi point pistols are ridiculously cheap and durable. Once I saw someone put one in the mud, roll on it with a tractor and the gun still shot as if it was brand new. Its also pretty heavy so its even a reasonable weapon without bullets + you can put a compensator on it that will make it even heavier as a bonus.

When you consider this, the price and the fact that the company will repair it for free no questions asked if you manage to damage it, I think it would make sense to own this if you’re a private investigator.

Hey folks,

@Nerull and I just finished writing Highlands, Deep Waters. We estimate that the complete game will have something around 260-270k words after revisions and rewritings.

The game is available in the link below(we are currently unable to edit the first post, but the link is the same):
https://dashingdon.com/play/lucaszaper/highlands-deep-waters/mygame/

We will update this link regularly with corrections and revisions, perhaps also adding/excluding some scenes. As always, we will be taking into consideration every suggestion from your part, so please report and comment whatever you wish to.

Also, if any of you wish to become an “official beta tester”, please just state it here or message us privately. Those willing to help us in revising and improving the game towards its final version will feature on the credits.

Thank you dearly for all your help so far, and we count on you all for this last part of the development of Highlands, Deep Waters!

edit: if any mod can help me change the title of the topic I would greatly appreciate it!
