sorry to say but the vid seems kinda misleading since not all games will have gender choice?
there is games with only female and male leads
saying “wichever gender and orientation you want” people will think they can choose the gender of both the ones they romance and the one they play as mc, considering some of the games will be locked female straight, or male gay for example make that statement kinda misleading in my pov.

The video says, “Whichever gender or orientation you want, there will be a Heart’s Choice game for you.”

That language clearly implies that there will be something for everyone in the HC library. However, it doesn’t imply that every single release will be targeted to every possible gender or orientation.

The only games for straight males will be Dawnfall and Jazz Age, where you can choose the gender of the protagonist and there are choices of both genders. No other games are planned, for now, that contains the possibility of playing as a straight male, with the exception of Warrior’s Shot.

I would say Heart’s Choice is one way we hope to engage more women (btw “females” is considered a little rude, in case you aren’t a native English speaker) in our audience. I’d argue all the games we’re publishing are good and the games which are gender variable and offer an option to play as male, romancing women are good, too.

Consolidated Gender Lock Discussion Thread

Romance novel readers are largely women. Heart’s Choice aspires to engage that audience, and bring female, romance novel readers to the world of IF and our games. Women who enjoy visual novels will also be part of the audience we hope to attract.

That said, our romance line is designed to include a broad spectrum of sexualities. We have gender variable games (play as any gender, romance any gender), we have games for women and femme n-b lesbian, and we have games for gay men.

We do not YET have a game under contract written exclusively for straight men. We have not received such a pitch for a romance game. We don’t assign pitches, and we don’t tell writers what to write.

Whilst I respect the reasons why we don’t have any (specific) games yet for straight male readers I do find the fact it’s not just me asking about them encouraging. Jazz Age and Dawnfall are both great games from the demos both in terms of story and romance for a straight male character, even if the options are apparently slightly limited.

Of course, when straight dudes aren’t the focus you can always rely on them to file a complaint There’s also no NB-locked games as of yet (I think), and I’d hope, given CoG/HC’s target demographic, that one gets pitched before an M/F story.

True, we haven’t been pitched a genderlocked nb romance. One of my games, If It Please the Court, the author describes as a lesbian romance, and in that game players can choose to play as female or nb, and I think (but would have to check) that’s with only she/her pronouns. I’ve indicated to the author that that falls outside of how we have handled nb in COG games and most nb expectations regarding “play as nb,” but we offer our authors on HC a lot of leeway, so .

A delay break is when there’s a timed delay between chapters, or between replays.

We don’t have a lot of games that include them - they’re only in free games, which are far less common in the COG and HG catalogues than paid games - so you may not have encountered them before.

When you buy the game, you buy the game, just like with COG or HG. The pricing is the same (based on word count, etc etc). Doing so turns off ads and delay breaks forever.

If you pay to bypass a delay break, it’s a one-time thing.

If a NB focused game gets pitched first that’s fine, just as long as M/F or V/F games might eventually happen.

I also don’t think it’s a crime to nicely ask about it so the devs know there’s a interest in them and so disprove the whole ‘straight men don’t read romance games’ and ‘it would always be just porn’ theories. But I am sure when the right pitch for a M/F or V/F game happens that fits the criteria of a HC game it will compliment everything else.

We don’t think that. No one thinks this. Please stop throwing these comments around. It’s not the first time you’ve suggested that these are the kinds of reasons we don’t yet have a M/F genderlocked game. Last time you clarified that these were reasons you were imputing to another user here, but that’s also not okay. The next time I will delete your comment.

You know, you are 100% capable of writing a game like this yourself and pitching it to COG. Instead of complaining about not having a game that you can see yourself playing and constantly blaming a publishing company for not receiving pitches for M/F games - something completely out of their control - make one and pitch it. Most of the writers submitting games to COG are women and members of the LGBTQ+ community, so they’re going to write from their perspectives. They’re under no obligation to cater to what you want.

You also have a whole SLEW of official COG titles and Hosted Games that let you play as straight men, and quite a few of those games have a major focus on romance. Obviously straight men enjoy interactive fiction, so bringing up that other people want M/F is pointless. It’s selfish to constantly complain about not having a M/F HC game when Mary stated multiple times that they just haven’t gotten a pitch for one from a writer that matches their quality standards.

Plus, HC literally isn’t even OUT yet. You’re complaining about not having something that you’ll probably, eventually receive by just waiting.
