Halloween Game Jam

Sigh, this is so depressing I spent the majority of yesterday studying the choice-script format and let me say that I feel so dumb right now I can’t get anything right, but yeah finally seeing the complexity of it makes me even more proud of my writers of this site that code more complex choices that have amazing story to go with it. just a quick shut-out to them for stories they give us noobs.

I think I’m joining this game jam, Halloween is my favorite holiday and it can’t hurt the fact that my birthday is a few days earlier than the actual night.

Update: I have a story, a premise, an outline of what the story can look like but it seems ChoiceScript coding is not working for me so I long abandoned it last night. I moved on to Twine but twine is even more confusing although I’ll admit but there is a bit simplicity to the site and I’m being more drawn to it. rn now circa today I’m watching tutorial of twine writing on YouTube while I’m writing my story, but yeah finally decided on twine. lmao a quick reminder i even gave choseyourstory a try and can I say I do not even know why I though writing on choseyourstory was easy and how the writers on the site had it easy.

sigh it seems like every format has at least some sort of complexity to it so no matter what I did I keep failing into the realm of depression farther and farther but Twine it is. my love. I might update once a while on my progress and ask for some help whenever I feel stick so I’m wishing all of us luck, regardless of if some us don’t chose to submit our final product lets help one another. #SupportNoobs.

My advice if is really frustrating code for you is going to chooseyourstory.com or Infinitystory and make your game there. You can make their games without code. Infinity page doesn’t use code at all choose your story is more versatile.

Just advice, you have plenty of time to learning anyone you choose.

It can feel like kind of a trial-by-fire experience, but after this jam project you can make the next one faster.

You can ask help on Twine forum or discord. If you’re using SugarCube format you can private message me if you need help. (I will private message you back to discuss the code further)

Hmm hello there, just had to stop my story cause I seem to be stack. and my mind is everywhere. I checked the twine forum earlier, I’m also looking through right now because I got stack. haven’t used discord in ages, lol I think I forgot its password. I’m still learning about twine formats including SugarCube but don’t know if I’ll use it.

I’m stack on the gender settings , skin tones, connecting passage-ways ect. that’s why I checked in rn, the YouTube videos on twine are not helping, there only covering the minimistic basic.

I’m having trouble with the variables and its settings. sigh. currently watching a tutorial of variables settings for characters, gender, names, and tones but it seems to be so hard.

Variables are complicated. First you have to define them on the startup file. Then you have to set a value. For gender there are several ways to go: text or numeric. Binary won’t work since you would need more than 2 values.

What I’m doing is using the example files as a guide or “how to”. Try somethin simple and ad over that.

Now, a question of my own, how wrong or terrible would be a killed puppie or kittie in the story? I mean, is a good way to show that something is really wrong. Nothing says evil like a dead pet. But if it is too much I can try to think something else.

I was doing the same thing, I have the tutorial and a test project open and am jumping back between them, so I can keep track of variables and the like.

As for the pet, pets dying in horror seems to be par for the course a lot of the time and personally it irks me a little bit, but that’s more the MC’s being stupid and getting them killed. I wouldn’t have a problem with it though because it could definitely add to the unsettling and distressing nature of a scene if it’s executed well, rather than just put in for shock value. It might be worth considering a trigger warning though, probably no need to remove it outright.

Keep up the great work everyone!

I’m working on too much to do this, but I’ll be keeping my eye on how everyone is doing. Can’t wait to see everyone’s project on Oct. 31st

Yeah, that is the thing. I like classics. But I agree that it is difficult to do it tastefuly and that it might trigger people. And I’m not sure if it’s worth it. It might be other ways to achieve the same resulta. Although lazy an unimaginative me still says dead pet. :joy:

Why not have it as a hallucination? You can still use creative detail in that regard and add the element of distress, make the MC question their sanity.

Just a thought

I might have glossed over it but is there a method for differentiating chapters in your book, or is each page simply broken up into scenes? (Scene01, scene02 etc.) and the chapters are more or less just “flavour text” to help break up the story for the reader?

Edit: also I seem to having a little trouble renaming scenes, I wanted to call them something unique but I kept getting errors, apparently one name already exists in the project.

Do you mean simply putting Chapter titles between them to make them stand out? You can use - Chapter 1 (whoops in the code it’s - [ b ] Chapter 1 [ /b ] expect without the spaces) if I remember correctly

For scenes, if you’re renaming then you have to remember to go through all the *gotos and *labels etc and update them all and make sure the name is unique in the code.

That’s what I meant yeah, changing the page break from next chapter on every page to just next, or something else, except when I want to break up the story. Otherwise I’d wind up with who knows how many chapters.
And in that case, it’s probably best to leave them as Scene01 through to whatever number, less hassle for me that way probably.

I think that it is a creative choice. The options I know of (or that I can think):

*image

To insert a nice image that you can create with paint or even powerpoint (don’t judge me, too much time at work :joy:)

After the commands, *page_break or *finish you can write things.

I guess that in the wiki it might be a way to change font size and type.

I can think of more options, but I won’t over complicate thins

Depends on how the pet is killed off.
Imagine the mc teaching a pet how to kick a ball but it never responds and when the mc and the pet are hiding from a monster after them, the pet sees a ball and runs to kick it :joy:

As for mine, its coming pretty slow since my PC has become a desktop…I need to replace the battery.:disappointed_relieved::disappointed_relieved:
But everyone keep up the good work :jack_o_lantern:

Haven’t got an awful lot so far about 100 words maybe, so I might need to pick up the pace somewhat but I’m having a fair bit of fun putting the stats and stuff in place along side the prologue, opposing stats are frustrating though haha

same I keep forgetting the opposed stat isn’t an actual variable

I just gave up attempting to get them to work, at least for this evening anyway.

I just want to encourage all of you maybe you don’t have a big word account, but you are laying the groundwork code that is a good accomplishment, that would, later on, help you to write faster.

And about stats, I don’t use them in this game I am using a perk system based on your profession instead. As it is not the Same a Military officer than a spy or a rocket scientist. I recommend in a small game not using lots of stats as can skyrocketing the word account.

I think I’ll jump in, if it isn’t too late. I’ve already been putting off working on my main WIP for a while, so might as well have an excuse for the procrastination until November.
I’d also like to extend what little help I can to everybody that has started or is considering starting a project. I’m not an expert, but I’ll aid you in any way I am capable of.

I made a plot summary

The voice made me write around 2k words of code for Chapter 1. (Where did it get a gun from?!) It then decided to have a break for the rest of the day and took all 5 of my brain cells with it. It’s alright it’s not like I have an essay to do or anything…
