…Which Austin are we talking about, here? O_o
Bioware Austin is largely ex-soe and mythic devs. The ones with train-wreck mmo’s as their work history. Edmonton and Montreal had little input on SWTOR and it shows.
This isn’t to say the entire Austin team is dubious, but enough are to cast enough doubt in my mind.
Bioware’s Austin studio. The guys behind SWTOR.
I don’t care what branch of bioware worked on SWTOR or WHO made the dumbass decision to make revan how they did. IT FUCKING PISSES ME OFF NONETHELESS AND I FREAKING HATE IT! I. HATE. IT. I HATE SWTOR WITH EVERYTHING I HAVE! I HATE WHAT THEY DID TO REVAN AND HK WITH A FUCKING VENGEANCE. I should stop swearing so much!
Oh. I was not aware of that. >.>
Okey-doke, don’t mind me. I haven’t played SWTOR since before the first expansion came out, anyway…
I only played it until shortly after launch. And I beta tested the damn thing! GAAAHHH I HATE THAT GAME SO SO MUCH. GGAAAAHHHH. FREAKING WHAT THEY DID TO REVAN AND HK! GRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!! slams my fist into the wall repeatedly
I think, what you need, is to log in, play it and kill Revan again
The expansion does kind of explain what they had going on but it is kind of hand-wavey.
It is a far better game than it was at launch. The expansions are slowly course correcting things. Won’t make everyone happy, but to try and do so is silly imo.
I, by my own moral code, REFUSE to play MMOS with heavy “P2W” aspects built in. I also refuse to pay for more than 1 MMO. And im already paying for WoW. I also refuse to play the game that BUTCHERED REVAN AND HK! stabs bioware austin’s employees
Would this be possible in the game?
If Guen and Arthur have no children, could Arthur acknowledge Mordred as his heir?
And if Guen has a daughter, could she arrange a marriage between her and Mordred, again making him the heir?
Hopefully that would be a daughter between Guen and Lance, otherwise she’d be Mordred’s half-sister, and the whole situation is already weird enough without that adding onto it…
SWTOR is about as far from P2W as you can get… Very few games aside from a number of Asian imports are in fact. I don’t know why everyone assumes that cash-shop = P2W these days but meh. Not really the subject of this thread now
::backs away slowly from vehement SWTOR discussion:: I’ll just… be over here…
(but maybe the P2W issue merits its own thread? I bet there are plenty of people who would be interested in discussing it, in general and specific terms.)
@WulfyK Arthur will be able to acknowledge Mordred as his heir regardless of whether or not he and Guen have a child. Arthur would not, however, allow a biological daughter of his to marry Mordred (even if he didn’t already, at that point, have personal reasons for being deeply distressed at the thought of half-sibling incest). I will say that @OtherGrimm’s scenario has occurred to me, but I don’t want to say a lot more because I’m afraid I might mislead people about what’s coming.
Which is probably going to be easy to present in nasty terms, judging by how some people view Arthur here (this thread).
I think the thing that I want there is that “a real king” should be something most people would not actually want if they knew what Mordred meant. Not puppy kicking Tuesdays, but “I’m just being pragmatic.” over something that is definitely not with the good of Britain’s people in mind. Not screwing it over because he can, but if it gets screwed over in achieving his goals - well, “You have to break some eggs to make an omelet.”
@Elfwine Yeah, in this context it would be difficult not to present Mordred as a contrast to Arthur, which means that people’s feelings about Arthur (positive, negative, or indifferent) will likely affect their feelings about Mordred. At least, that’s what I’m planning for.
Part of my current conception of adult Mordred is that he will feel that humanity is inherently evil (unlike Arthur, who believes humanity is inherently good). He’ll have specific reasons, which will actually NOT be a Tragic Personal Backstory in the usual sense (other than the tragic backstory of his parentage, which he won’t have any particular issue with per se). That is to say, he won’t be evil because of evil having been done to him; he’ll be evil because of his particular, magically-granted perspective into human hearts.
Should be interesting to see how that’s crafted, given what you’ve said on not wanting this to be A Game of Thrones kind of unpleasant, where most people’s hearts being black as coal is like saying “swords are sharp”.
@jeantown which is actually what i had in mind thanks for info.
Also i apologise for the Star wars mess, Sorry.
Btw jeantown you seems to be TVtroper to me.
@Elfwine Indeed… My fantasy-Britain is definitely not Game of Thrones, but maybe Mordred’s unique perspective has led him to believe that it is, and nothing is going to change his mind.
@CaeserCzech Glad to hear it, and no worries re: Star Wars. I can sympathize with the disappointment.
And yes, I’m quite fond of tropes and the TVTropes approach to them. I used to spend a lot of time reading articles over there. I never went so far as to become an editor, but I was super-excited when a friend of mine made a little page for my novels.
@jeantown I’ve read the entirety of The Once and Future King by T. H. White and one thing that seems characteristic of Arthur is that he maintains his innocent nature throughout the story. Are you planning on deviating much from this characterization or keeping it generally the same?
Also I just want to say that I much prefer your version of the Arthurian tale over White’s due to your ability to create realistic characters that aren’t just walking stereotypes. Your writing is marvelous, to be quite honest and I can’t wait to see what you do next.
That said, are you planning on making, as Arthur describes, the “Games-mania” of the Table prevalent in the story?
