Eyes of Shan: Book One [WIP] (Updated 25/12/23)

This is probably the best-written demo I’ve read so far. I love your way with descriptions. I think this one will be a hit when it publishes.

Great work.

I’m aroace and have to agree that basically all the male characters interaction lead to suggestive dialogues…I’m going to use the dialogue at the beginning for example:
[“Seeing how worried he is, you decide to indulge him”
“You let a sly, suggestive smile tug at your lips. “Well, if you insist.”
“You’re such a worrywart,” you laugh, amused.”
"You pause for a moment before slowly nodding. “Fine.”
“You shake your head and reach for the collar of your shirt.” “If you wanted, you could have just asked.”] I tried all these choices and all of them lead to something uncomfortable. Also it’s mc personality already set? bc we don’t have any neutral response :pensive:

There should be an option where such choices should not be available when playing as male mc. That’s just my opinion.

i understand that you might feel uncomfortable with such options being available and i can try to include more neutral options, but some male commanders want to romance male ROs as well, hence i will not be removing such choices from the game!! thank you for your feedback, and I’ll work on improving the character choices

That’s why there are choices usually such as “are you interested in males/females”
Goodluck btw

Not sure what you mean, these look hella neutral to me? I didn’t try them myself so I dunno to what they lead but from the text of these choices they look fine.

Also people need to remember that every MC in every game, even IFs, will have some form of “set personality” that you can influence. But it’s literally impossible to give you an entirely blank slate with millions of options to make the MC react in exactly that way you would want to.

And I personally think it’s unfair to the author if you go in with that sort of expectation

Every author has their own way of implementing things and we shouldn’t compare them to others only because they do it differently or in a way we don’t like. I also don’t see how such a choice could’ve been added organically in the story so far. And if it’s just there for the sake of it, it’ll feel really unnatural and weird

Well as a reader I’m allowed to give my opinion right? Obviously it doesn’t mean that the author has to oblige with whatever I’m saying. I just expressed how I felt and that’s it.

i think this depends what you think a neutral response is? mc’s personality is not totally set, but does tend to fall into one of the four categories i try to make available for every possible response choice. from the choices that you’ve listed above, only two seem to have suggestive connotations, which i will work on improving, but other than that the closeness between hansol and the commander are occuring in a completely platonic setting!

MAGNIFICIENT  HANSOL HAS MY HEART :kissing_closed_eyes: :kissing_closed_eyes: :kissing_closed_eyes: :kissing_closed_eyes:

This sentence mostly works for the other feelings but for numbness it sounds kinda weird, Id interpret it more as an absence of emotion or supressing them

Delicious update, thank you!

So, I just found this WIP and it’s just delicious. Teasing Hansol is super fun xD.
Though I did notice some typos/bugs:

image
Should have a if between wonders and an. (from the relationship screen).

Each option after losing to Hansol in hand-to-hand combat (and getting choked by him) also leads to the outcomes where you knee him in the groin and then treats the fight as a draw rather than a loss (since it has you also react to kneeing him before going to the scene that’s after the fight):

And for this one not really sure if intentional or not but the top option when meeting Insu after returning doesn’t have the relationship text for him appear in the relationship screen, though all the others do:

Example of the above if any option other than the top option is selected (and the below screenshot is using what appears after the second option is selected; others did lead to different statuses):

And if I used the first option after meeting Insu no relationship text shows up for him:

there’s a continuity error when we tell hansol that there’s no need to get his hands dirty when mansok said that thing

loved the update btw!

i’ve fixed the typo and the relationship stat with insu!! however, i’m not sure about the sparring scene with hansol, it seems to work fine when i try it on the dashingdon server. but thank you for informing me of the errors!!

Ah, I left out an important bit my bad (I didn’t actually specify which option I was choosing when losing to Hansol OTL) and in case you need specific stats/gender for it to appear:

female Commander, Glaive speciality.

Selecting the last option leads to what I was seeing in the hand-to-hand portion:

Then all four of these options lead to the screenshots in my previous post:

Hope that helps!

@nootnoots Quick feedback!! The stats are a little wonky. Our personality and conjoining choices are off kelter

For example, Some of the choices that would be considered ruthless, actually cause the Merciful stat to go up, or Choosing not to express ourselves, still makes the emotional go up and so forth.

Some scenes where I noticed this:

  • When speaking with Hansol after training; whilst talking about the camp, I chose to say “I am fine, what made you think otherwise”, that made emotional go up. But when I replayed and actually chose to show emotion it didn’t move.

  • I made the comment about how I should’ve done the same thing to the bandits, that they did to the Shan; which I would assume is a ruthless statement but, it made mercy go up instead.

  • When given the option to kill mercifully or painfully after the interrogation, I chose painfully. Yet again, it was my merciful stat that went up.

So yea basically the stats seem to be backwards sometimes.

An update, excellent! Where the story is going next is already sounding very interesting to me, and the sorts of shenanigans and such that could happen… also getting to meet a new named character! A rather amusing one as well.
Although I’d say all the named characters thus far have been memorable in their own way.

I might wait for the next update to consider trying the second ‘branch’ of the palace stuff, as I see it. I usually tend to just go see the Emperor right away and became familiar with that branch, but I remember last time going to clean up first and being surprised how much can change from a simple choice like that!
