Donor: A Vampire Victim's Tale [GAME RELEASED!]

@Frogs I promise you’ll find out in the next couple of chapters, but for those who want to know now…

“Turning” is a tedious process that takes days to complete and requires several victims. The person being turned also needs round the clock monitoring, has to be fed constantly, etc. It isn’t something Richard and Paul enjoy doing, especially given the low success rate.

Hope that helps answer your question

Can vampires feed on corpses or the blood needs to be fresh?
If they could feed on corpses it would make the whole thing a lot easier, they could just find a job in a morgue or something.

Gotta be fresh. Blood coagulates pretty quickly, so there’s that to consider. There’s also the fact that once the victim’s dead, blood’s no longer pumping out of the arteries/veins, making it a lot more awkward to get to - that’s why Paul goes to the trouble of pumping the chest of the dead body in Chapter 1.

In my story, at least - the best way to get a fresh supply of food without killing (immediately) is probably what Richard and Paul are already doing. Either finding willing victims to bleed themselves, or using a person as “cattle” until their blood runs out.

Even the blood at hospitals is somewhat adulterated with anticoagulants, so a typical “blood transfer” would be out of the question.

Hope that helps!

It’s been a while, but I’m back with Chapter 6. Various items of interest:

  • Because the story diverges based on your prior decisions, you’ll need to answer a few questions if you start at chapter 6 directly.
  • You can die in this chapter, but it’s unlikely. Let me know if you do!
  • There are three separate endings to this installment, depending on which path you choose.
  • For a longer play-through, I suggest engaging Charles - although if you pulled him into Dinner Theater, this will no longer be an option.
  • Total story up to ~49k words

As always, any and all feedback is appreciated.

PS - Still working to balance out the Xanax and Intelligence/Creativity mechanics. Thanks for your patience on those

Thanks! I was never really gone - just had a very busy past two months. Hopefully things have died down and I’ll be posting updates more regularly

Omg, I just come by and see chapter 6 is out! runs to play it

I liked this chapter, I thought Charles is just a jerk but apparently he’s a victim too and you can get him to help you.
As for feedback I think the relationship stat changes are a bit too high maybe, for example when I refused to go hunting with Paul his relationship dropped to around 58 but when I accepted it went to over 80. The relationship shouldn’t completely turn from just 1-2 choices.

I love your writing. Sorry I don’t have a lot of time to spend testing at the moment but had a quick read through the last chapter and just thought I’d let you know about the typo I found.

Yep." He pauses thoughtfully. "Listen, I know you can take care of yourself, but Charles is a serious piece of shitfor

Sh*t for (stars since I’m not sure if there’s a word censor in this forum.)

@Frogs Yeah I think I’ll probably change it to ±10 instead of 20 (originally I wanted the vamps to be fickle, but I agree the value is too high). One thing to note, though - in the last chapter, Paul’s stat goes up to 60 if you agree to go hunting with him during your conversation in the kitchen. That’s hard-coded because I thought it was going to help me get around another problem later on, but just talking over it with you has given me an idea…

I’m going to remove out the hard-coded value and update the relationship stats to ±10 later today. Thanks!

@Jacic Thank you  I’ll correct it!

FYI, I just incorporated @Frogs and @Jacic’s feedback (relationship stats tweak and typo correction). Sometimes that causes the demo to revert to the beginning of the chapter - sorry for any inconvenience.

As always a very enjoyable and suspenseful chapter (no seriously as the story moves on I’m becoming extra paranoid and calculating, is that what they call indication with a fictional character? Lol)

A piece of feedback I would like to give would be about the choices for those who want to skip ahead. For example when starting from chapter 3 we jump immediately to the first choice and since we don’t have any difference in the stats we cannot move further or the chapter where relationships matter otherwise you die (!) also the name is Lenore and the fear is a default one. For the sake of those who want to jump ahead you should provide more recap options like names, phobia, stats, plot points, relationships etc for an easier playtest of the game.

@cookiemonsta - this is great feedback, thank you!

I’ve been meaning to rework the “start from chapter X” options, but hadn’t yet as I didn’t think anyone was actually going to use them. Since it looks like they’re getting modest traffic, however, and now that you’ve said something, I’ll provide a recap with stats/name options for each one

FYI, I ended up taking @cookiemonsta’s idea and running with it… All “start from” links have been updated to include a configuration page where you can customize your character. And if you enter the game via a “start from” link, you should also be able to access previous chapter summaries and character descriptions via the stats screen.

Please let me know if you run into any bugs when using the configuration tool or if I left anything critical out of the descriptions/recaps.

Thanks!

This is such an awesome blend of horror and thriller with a mix of comedy and likable characters. It’s like you’re a baby trying to play nice with two hungry coyotes

@Nikki You totally made my evening! I’m so glad you’re enjoying it!

OMG that’s exactly how I felt as I was playing this.

Anyways, so far I think I trust/like Richard far more than Paul. I mean, aside from the Dinner Theater night, he actually seems nice. A bit bipolar, but overall nice. In fact, the Dinner Theater was the only time that he actually seemed like a full blown ass! He was also kind of cruel when he found out that Lenora was a druggie, but it was understandable, especially since when he asked she didn’t answer. Speaking of @Elena_H, is it at all possible to add the option to tell Richard the truth when he asks us what’s wrong with us? The only choices available are either lie to him (which decreases his stats) or to not answer him at all. Is there a way for us to be able to tell him the truth? I mean, he does have a right to know that Lenora is going through withdrawal. Also, is there a way to get her permanently clean? I’m kind of not too wild with the idea of her being a druggie.

Anyways, here are my final words before I go to bed; Charles is a dick, Paul can’t be trusted and so far Richard is the only honest (sadist) person I can trust in there. And so far I really enjoy this and look forward to the next chapter.

@VioletHikari Lol @ Rich being bipolar  That’s a perfect way to describe him.

As for telling him the truth in Chapter 2, I’ll go back over the content and see if I can work that option in. Just an aside, lying to him about going through withdrawal won’t decrease your stats if you’re skilled enough at it.

Yes, you can get Lenore permanently clean. Without giving too much away, there will be an option in the next couple of chapters to give up all of your pills.

Thanks so much for reading! Next chapter should be finished sometime next week.
