Divided We Fall- A Spanish Civil War WIP

oh shot ignore me about telling who the characters are i completely missed it until now =;

Haha so they’re *best* friends for real :stuck_out_tongue:

It seems that Maria is the only one who is safe so far , everyone else dies.
What is the ideology of Alba, I got confused at times, I thought for the workers ideologies are for communist

Thanks guys,
@Pepper Alba along with a lot of the workers in Barcelona are anarchists, opposed to the state, whilst the communists want everything to be stated controlled. So although communism generally is a workers ideology, Spain was an odd case because in some areas, anarchism really was a big deal.
As well as the anarchists and communists (who were relatively small before the war began) the biggest workers party was the Socialists, who were very moderate and pro-democracy and made up the majority of the Republican government. And just to make thing even more confusing, there was also the Republican party which was centre/centre-left, middle class, pro democracy. Altogether, these left wing groups made up the Popular Front, which won the 1936 elections and fought the Republic in the war.

So yeah, its a very confusing and complicated picture. I was thinking of maybe making the stats screen into a sort of glossary/encyclopaedia where you can look at all the parties, organisations, leaders and maybe aircraft as well.

Well I read that Spain was an anarchist dream , wherein commies and anarchist from different countries converge and used as a template in their papers and doctrines before being disenchanted again by how it runs, yeah confusing times

Right, I decided to add an encyclopedia where you can find info on the parties involved to clear any confusion plus a few key figures and aircraft that appear in the story. I’ve also added romance for chapter 4 between maria/gabrielle and someone else if De La Rosa happens to be dead, which I forgot the first time round.

Hey @AlexClifford1994 is it possible that the republica can win with our influence? or will this be fully historical?

@AlexClifford1994 I like how the character stories develop. The encyclopedia is very useful, I hope you’ll add the photos and signs for the remaining individuals and groups I think your photos are well chosen, but the map looks a bit confusing, when I saw it the first timee I got the sides wrong, especially the nationalist pilots call themselves “blue”. I recommend you to choose different colors.

Some dialogues can be confusing too, sometimes it’s not clear who’s exactly speaking a line.

Aren’t Alba and her team not too reckless with using grenades and molotovs in the telephon exchange building? Don’t they risk to damage something important there?

If De La Rosa spares Vasquez and doesn’t switch the channel, he gets attacked and shot down by him, but if he sitches the channel, Vasquez and the red pilot are talking about flying to a republican airbase, does it mean they change their decision later?
Anyway, I think it’s a pity that either de La Rosa or Vasquez have to die by the end of chapter 2. It would be a good plotline if De la Rosa had an option to let Vasquez escape or eject from the plane after a shootdown and meet Vasquez again in some final battle in the last chapter.

Alba and Isabel having sex in the church is a bit surprising. If they have “benefits” it should be mentioned earlier, and if it’s supposed to be their first time the dialougue should be more elaborate.

In general, lines said by her companion are always the same, no matter if it’s Isabel or Jorge, I think you should give them some individuality.

If morales chooses to reinforce their position, both times comes the sentence “There’s something rather comic to fighting amongst all this academia however they haven’t got anything else to use”. It should be “to fight” and using it once would be enough.

Why doesn’t Maria become pregnant if she’s in the relationship with Vidal?

Why is Alba always the leader that Morales will aim at? It’s possible to make choices for her to be less prominent, so Salazar could be the main leader instead.

Will you include more ususal stats for the four characters too?

@Pepper Can Alba die if Morrales was killed in chapter 1? I’ve never had this so far.

Hey @AlexClifford1994 there’s this part: “Alba!” Isabel! shouts from a few metres away, struggling to be heard above the din, “What’s wrong?” did you put the ! in Isabel in purpose?

@kai229 I thought about whether that should be a possibility and asked myself ‘could any of the choices morales and alba make effect the outcome of the entire war’. And the frank answer to that is no. Ultimately, the Republic lost because it was not aided by the western democracies. Morales and Alba will have to cope with the fact that the cause they fight for is a doomed one. Also, fixed that little mistake, thanks

@Wulfyk thanks for the detail, really appreciate it. I’ll go through it point by point.
The pictures I use are limited to those in the public domain and those under the creative commons license and so there is a very limited pool, so it isn’t possible to get pictures for everyone.

When I get time I’ll have a look at breaking up the longer sections of dialogue.

Alba and the militia have neither military nor telecommunications expertise. They’re really not bothered about damaging stuff.

I suppose it might be interesting to see Vasquez later on, I’ll certainly consider this.

The ‘benefits’ thing is eluded to if you chose at the beginning of the chapter if you chose to ‘spend time with isabel’. But the reason it isn’t really mentioned is that they don’t have to be friends with benefits (for want of a better phrase) if you don’t want them to be. If you pick that, then they already are, if you don’t then they aren’t. Again, when I find some time, I might look at varying Jorge and Isabel a tad, although I’m really very lazy.

Fixed Morales thing.

Maria doesn’t get pregnant because she’s very careful about that sort of thing. Also I wanted a bit of variation in the story depending on if you were in a relationship with vidal or not. This doesn’t mean that maria won’t be faced with a similar dilemma later on…

Morales aims at Alba because alba is the leader described, directing troops back and forth. Alba always becomes leader because if she wasn’t her sections would just be her being ordered around, which doesn’t offer many possibilities on the way of choices. I want the choices to have consequences, like for instance, killing Alba inadvertently. It was important for me that the characters aren’t somehow detached from the chaos around them and are just as vulnerable of everyone else. Bad things happen in war e.g. good people who you don’t want to die getting killed and I wanted to get that across.

In terms of stats I don’t have any plans for them. I prefer to put the outcomes in control of the player directly through choices. And personally, I don’t see stats working very well with this format, e.g. how would stats effect Maria’s storyline?

And finally, Alba isn’t killed at that particular stage if Morales is dead.

Phew, there we go! Overall, did you like it?

@AlexClifford1994 yeah, sorry for being foolish, afterall, 2 people can’t make a war can they? haha, glad you took the time to answer everything for all of us, how’s chapter production doing?

Currently working on Chapter 5, I’m hoping it might be out tomorrow, that’s my schedule anyway. This one sees all the characters involved in the frozen battle for Teruel in December 1937.

That’s what i like to hear! you’re basically efficiency itself! how many chapters will the game contain?

Thank you, we’ll see how it goes, didn’t get as much done as I wanted today, so solid working tomorrow. There will be 7 chapters plus epilogue, should be over 100,000 words in total.

Also, this typo: Church is with the enemy, the Church is the enemy! Every day they lie to the workers and say their suffering on Earth will be redeemed in Heavan. it should be Heaven not Heavan :b

@AlexClifford1994 Good that my post helped you, I’m especially glad you liked my proposal on Vasquez

Couldn’t you edit the maps to change the colors?

Ok, this explains why they’re throwing explosive stuff, but shouldn’t then there be a chance to damage something?

Honesty i think that changing the colors would be useless. Its the historical colors republic: red
Nationalists: blue-black
You can alway point out wich is wich though.

I have changed the colours on the map, the colours were those used on Wikipedia, but I do agree it could be clearer. So now, the Republican territory is red, after all they are referred to as reds by their enemies, and Nationalist territory is blue. There is a key to the map on the encyclopedia.

Right, one day late, here’s chapter 5! It took slightly longer as this involves some of the most complicated coding thus far but it seems to all be working ok so give it a go!

Chapter 5 takes place in December 1937 as all 4 characters are drawn into the bloody battle for Teruel. It starts innocently enough but things turn very brutal indeed…

Hell Yes, No problem on the One day late Alex, just for your speed, it’s amazing how quickly they turn out, hey @cyanide, New chapter up!
