“Plucky newbie” especially when paired with extreme irresponsibility for whatever position they have- it’s more palatable when the character has a good reason for that sort of personality (like being 12 lol)
It’s extremely minor and nitpicky, but I hate when any story begins with someone being woken up by an alarm clock. Ugggghhhhh.
Lol! Or woken up by their mothers, resulting in the protagonist declaring, “OH NO! I’m going to be late for that extremely important thing I’m supposed to be doing!”
A disheveled anime girl running slowly to some destination with toast in her mouth while everyone else outpaces her.
I’m not the biggest of fan of the trope that thinks optimism is naivety, or the trend to take characters who see the good in the world and paint that as unrealistic until their happiness is crushed out by tragedy and that the ‘realistic’ view of the world is the void that comes after. Stories with that kind of trope quickly lose my interest and care, just not quite my cup of tea.
A personal one for me. Western television seems to adore this trope even though I wish they would let it die.
Not every show needs an aggressively morally self righteous character who:
-
Always takes the moral high ground. Everyone around them is stupid/corrupt for not instantly agreeing to everything they say, ever.
-
Does this AND sells out their beliefs as soon as they can get some benefit from doing it.
Mind you, Morty and Rik(Young Ones) aren’t this exactly, because while they try to take moral high ground on everything, they are almost always wrong. But they still fit the trope in the sense that they are always seeing themselves as better than everyone around them and despite all the preaching they do, they will sell out their own cause as soon as it’s convenient for them.
In Community’s defense, Britta eventually becomes a spoof of this trope, as she goes from a principled person who was at least partially admirable to an oblivious blowhard whose name is synonymous with failure.
Is…that a thing? It sounds so oddly specific that I am now deeply concerned there could be fetish stuff out there for it.
Of course you would call it Hot Buttered Babes 7: Succulently Slow-Toasted.
It’s annoyingly common, especially in intros.
There are many tropes I hate. Some may have already been said…
-
yandere/abusive romance in otome games (or any romace media). No matter what, those creep me out. I don’t find anything sexy/interesting in the (usually puppy level brain) MC being abused/manipulated by a psycho. I usually want to rip my eyes off when said MC justify or don’t see the danger: girl, run away or kill the monster!!!
-
Dumb MCs. Either the bland guy with no personality that find problems even going to the bathroom, or the brain dead girls that let everyone manipulate her.
-
MC being trowed into a situation/world/activity everyone know how it works and/or why is happening, but no one think about inform the newcomer ANYTHING, just to than having him/her doing dumb stuff that vould be avoided if someone had the decency to talk about stuff from the beginning.
-
character dieing just for easy tears, with no actual plot reasons. Even worse if those are romances and not avoidable (looking at you, Thane)
-
no chance for a positive outcome in a game with choices. I play to have fun, playng just to have depressing endings no metter how I play is not fun for me.

if a game have a only female protagonist, is forced to be either asexual or lesbian. Sometime have a boyfriend, but if he survive the first two minutes of game is already strange, since usually is dead before even the game start. And for the rest of the game, the protagonist is a nun: no looking at other men, not even mention of liking them. I’m tired of this trope “strong woman need no men”. A woman may not need a men, but she may want one. At least having some fun with one.
but thane had a reason…he was sick and dying . how is that ‘No reason’ ?
I for one love those . Too many of the opposite around to count .
I prefer a Strong women without men (I found it stupid though) To the women has to be shy and nuns and become mental slaves to romantic options normally directly abusives and rudes sell all their individual thought and morality to be converted in a trophy wife.
yeah when its well done , its awesome . But gotta hate when ‘strong women’ has to be ‘strong’ cose everyone around is stupid . I’m like…think peoples are blind or something ?
But I still take that , over the ‘women need mens to be saved/helped/ or must be romanced’ . Like Jeebus !
Also while I’m in this…there is the trope of ‘women can only be cunning cose she must have wrong morale compasse!’ you know…like she must be a smuggler…rogue type . If its a warrior female…then she must have a husband and be religious . roll eyes …and if she is a warrior without a husband…she must have been rejected or a widow…and trust none…until prince charming come along . And if he doesn’t…she must be a butch and therefor ugly…and die fast .
Where? I’d like to know where is a videogame with a strong straight female protagonist who is not widowed or single.
Why is ok having a lesbian protagonist, but not a straight one?
never said it was ok , first . and second…I don’t remember a lesbian protagonist…ever .
can’t think of one right now , but was thinking in movies . You got plenty of those though .
where Gays are side content and often removed fast cose reasons .
So wait…you want a game that start with a strong women that is already like Married or have a Bf ?? Don’t think there is a game like that .
Edit: actually…I remember ONE game . Dreamfall . well not the longest journey , but the one that came after ? and not dreamfall chapters either . But dreamfall . where you play as a female…and well she start with a boyfriend .
I hate dumb female ptotagonist like the big mayority of otome protagonists, but I’m tired of the trope, since it seem to say “but if it’s another woman, is ok!”
I know is mostly because videogame industry still fear for the weak straight male sensibility, but it irks me when the only female protagonist with a living (more or less) boyfriend I can remember is in Lollipop Chainsaw and he is a talking head attached to her hip for the entire game minus two little cutscene…
Pray’s female protagonist.
Ellie, the last of us 1-2
Life is strange
Many JRPGs like the Atelier serie heavily hint on GxG romance.
humm…
never heard of the 1st two as for Life is strange , Max isn’t a Lesbian . She is Bi . And she can date a creepy guy if she choose to .
And I dont play JRPG for good reasons . So…don’t know anything about those .
I hate most conventional gender-bending tropes, particularly the so-called first and third laws of gender-bending. Those need to die with a passion!
Urgh, my bad typing…is Prey XD
Anyway, I find strange for anyone not knowing the last of us…the kiss at the E3 has been talked for weeks!
