Disliked Elements, Mechanics, and Tropes

Doesn’t really narrow it down. Lotta Yandere stories have gratuitous shit like that.

Actually, that’s one of my other pet peeves.

So, you have a crazy RO (or just a character who’s obsessed with you and crazy). Fine, interesting. They talk crazy, they give off a creepy vibe, good stuff.

So, in these games, often the yandere is given sympathetic traits. Like, not just acting really sweet and kind, but like, a sympathetic backstory, some genuine compassion and/or good intentions. A tragic backstory. Stuff like that. Basically, you have a good combination of likeable/sympathetic traits and obvious insanity. Good stuff. That’s the whole appeal of a yandere. You kinda like them despite fearing them.

But then, when it’s time for them to do something crazy, BAM! the most disgusting, edgelord bullshit you’ve ever seen. Often stuff that the character in question never seemed inclined towards. Like, murder is one thing but then they go and do shit like, idk, cannibalism or something.

Just because they’re crazy doesn’t mean you can have them do any horrible crime that you want! There needs to be build up! It needs to fit with the character! I’m not asking for every character’s darker nature to be hinted at from the beginning, it’s circumstantial, but I shouldn’t feel like the crimes these people commit were selected by madlibs!

Yanderes are generally depicted as some kind of psychopath I wouldn’t really expect them to act rationally

Yandere VN with MC’s death that they deserve it, I can think of a potential name for you: School Days.

You think the MC in School Days, Itou Makoto is an asshole? I will introduce you his father - who is far worse than him, you can read about him here

Actually turns it out that saying most likely won’t get me ban the name is Yandere I Love You So I Want To Kill You. Do be warned that i haven’t seen it since I was a teen so it’s probably worse then what I remember

Oh, how I love these Japanese names

Yandere visual novels aren’t my usual read but there are a few that I like. But at least these visual novels gave us an warning and you know exactly what you are doing playing these games. But when a character who seems to be “normal” turns out to be a psycho without warning, it really irks me (yes Toma from Amnesia, I am talking about you)

Getting a little off topic, since this thread is about things you dislike.

I’d suggest moving further discussion of liked yandere games to the Video Games thread.

That’s the part that always drives me nuts: We’re literally in the middle of fighting a war against the main villain and their army of minions… and you choose now of all times to decide you want in my pants. Buddy, your priorities are more screwed up than you’re gonna be if you don’t get your grubby mitts off my belt buckle.

Case in point: Goro Majima from the Yakuza series. He’s always had a reputation for being a crazy knife freak, but there’s also always been an element of a man who’s very much in control and knows damn well what he’s doing. His history’s been hinted at for a while, but Yakuza 0 finally gave the full story about his transformation into the Mad Dog of Shimano - Short version: A year of torture in a yakuza blacksite, then being forced to work as a suit at a cabaret club to clear his debt, but his employers keep shifting the goalposts on that debt for giggles, plus his sworn brother is gonna be looking for his head soon to pay back a presumed betrayal (which didn’t happen, Majima got waylaid, but his sworn brother doesn’t know that at the time), oh yeah and also Majima’s falling for a girl who’s the central crux of the game’s entire plot and so one of the deadliest yakuza families is out for her blood.

Add it all together, and it’s really not much of a surprise when Majima goes on a mass killing spree and utterly decimates the Dojima family single-handedly.

(And this fits with the yandere thing because Majima is extremely gay for Kiryu. I am, of course, joking, but I mean… )

I hate when enemies in games can somehow tell it’s you making noise during a stealth section (like footsteps), and not the other 5 enemies patrolling about.

I dislike most RNG in these kinds of games because repeatability is important for replayability as far as I’m concerned.

These games are not like a lot of video games where the actual gameplay is enjoyable in and of itself. I mean, the actual gameplay mechanics are “read the text, make a choice, hit NEXT”. You know what that is? That’s a multiple choice exam. That’s not fun. The fun in replaying these games generally comes from two different things. The first is experiencing the different aspects of the story and the second is replaying an old favorite route through the story. RNG interferes with this because those things require that the player is able to pick a certain path through the game.

So it ends up just feeling bad in general IMO. If the RNG is significant enough to block me off from things, it interferes with my ability to get desired replays and that feels bad, because all you can really do is reset until you get it. On the other hand, if the RNG isn’t significant enough to stop me from doing anything, then what’s it really doing?

What is RNG?

RNG is short for “random number generator”; in a gaming context, it’s used to describe a mechanic that is luck-dependent. I.e., the game generates a number and that number influences the outcome.

Also I don’t like when a game is too stat dependent but the choices are too esoteric to easily determine which is being tested so I have to check my stats before every choice for like 5 minutes and then hope the one that says “do something clever” isn’t testing my charisma or something.

Also also when they expect you to remember something that was mentioned once 2 hours ago and you have to type it in.

Bruh I hate this so much. I don’t even think its clever or cool, I think it’s dumb as fuck.

That’s most of the games here  it’s why I have started to read the code as I play

Choosing a side over which character you agree with.

It suckkkks big time and when I get presented with this situation I don’t pick a side because that’ll make the relationship tank like crazy and when they do have a “Don’t choose a side option.” They freaking pick on you or glare at you instead because yes that’s what I want making TWO characters mad at me instead of one.

For me that’s understandable when what you are picking sides over is a huge thing. It would be werid if a character didn’t get mad at you for going against their core beliefs
