Disliked Elements, Mechanics, and Tropes

He was meant to be despised.
The problem is that he’s not despised because he’s an hate sink villain as intended… He’s hated because of his own existence among plot armor, stupidity aura and middle school bully behevior really stretches suspension of disbelif.

Edit: I forgot: and then when you actually fight him, he’s just a downgraded, not even an upgrade, version of a common enemy.

To this day I’m still vaguely surprised he never backflipped while smirking and monologuing about how he loves being evil in a cutscene. THAT’S how poorly written he is imo.

Going back to Kai’s dumbass sword: The hell of it is, melee in Mass Effect isn’t even out of the realm of possibility. Combat knives exist. Your Omni-tool can forge hard light weapons, and in the case of the Shadow Broker, a tower shield, on the fly. Jack turns herself into a biotic juggernaut to beat the crap out of the Blue Suns. A good sledgehammer will always have a place in combat if you’re smart with it. The groundwork was there for Kai to not be a shit character, and they still blew it.

The character was utterly ridiculous. Plus, the mf-er killed Thane. At that point, I just wanted my Shepard to gut him and wear his frigging entrails around her neck. Bastard.

But dontcha know? Asians have secret martial arts knowledge, no weapon is more powerful than a katana in an Asian man’s hand! :sunglasses:

I can’t be the only one who also felt that Kai Leng was a racist stereotype in addition to being an edgy teenager’s first Shadowrun character lmao.

Street samurai, but like, without the street. Or the samurai.

Kai’s really bad at Shadowrun, it turns out.

Maybe this one is just me but what the heck… the idea that somehow in modern fiction it feels like if a female lead has a male supporting love interest it lessens her as a character and her natural strength and power and whatnot, or that character will clearly usurp her popularity rather than them being seen as an equal partnership.

Good example was the removal of the idea that Rey and Finn could get together, because that would detract from her journey and we need to put her with the emo neo-Nazi she called a monster in the last movie instead. :unamused:

Finn didn’t even get to be with Poe (I prefer them as bros but I can respect people who ship them) and they basically created an Anti-Rey to distract him and drag him from the main plot cause we don’t have any clue about what to do with him and Poe. Disservice to Finn, to Rose and even to Rey honestly.

I think female leads should be able to have male love interests that aren’t terrible people basically.

Yeah, that would be nice! You wouldn’t think this would be such a foreign concept, but damn, how many stories now have either featured a terrible male love interest or a terrible female love interest or had both parties in the romance be equally terrible for each other?

He ain’t even Japanese.

Yes, but you see, katanas are the Asia sword, so it doesn’t matter if he’s Japanese or not!

Source: bro, just trust me

(And by the way, Asian = katana is another thing that drives me up a wall. There are OTHER ASIAN-MADE SWORDS, damn it! No disrespect to katanas, but I am sick to death of seeing them!)

As we mentioned swords, can someone explain me the advantages of a reverse grip palese?
I still fail to understand why someone should wield a weapon differntly to how it has been designed.

PS Yes I’m aware that reverse grip technicques actually exist but as far I know 1) They use knife, not swords 2) They use pommel strikes

There are times where the Rule of Cool does actually make things more cool, even if we all know it makes absolutely no sense. Do I wish anime and popular media would do proper swordplay more often? Sure. But I can put that feeling aside easily enough when I see a katana get fired like a massive bullet out of its sheath in order to make it slice faster, and therefore more lethally, somehow. Does it make sense? Hell no, but it’s so cool though.

Plus, you know, the fact that the concept art of Jetstream Sam’s sword actually tries to explain the not-logic behind how it would even work makes me respect it even more - most times, something like this happens and the audience gets to figure it out for themselves, so I appreciate the detail of Sam’s sheath firing a small pile driver into the handguard of his sword in order to kick the sword out of its sheath and into Sam’s hand for a turbo slash.

I guess it’s a constant test of the questions of Opposites Attract vs Likeminded Attract, as well as the obsession some have with Bad Boys or Bad Girls (though I think some work) against good boys and girls.

The logical example I can think of is those who don’t like Hermione with Ron (which I adore because I am a sucker for Smart Girl and Awkward Boy romances - Luna and Neville seriously why didn’t you get together) and want her to end up with Draco (euw).

(Though Harry and Hermione doesn’t bother me as much but they’re much better personally as honouree bro and sis for me)
