I must confess that I know nothing about WoD, but I’ve always wanted to check it out. For those who’ve read the demo, do you think A Time of Monsters would be a good place to start? Or should I read the other works in the WoD universe like VtM Night Road, etc.? I know they’re not connected to each other. Just wanted to know which one is more beginner-friendly for someone clueless about WoD. Really interested in A Time of Monster’s premise though.
I’d say they all are beginner-friendly. I certainly knew nothing about WoD before playing them.
Oh, I see! Thanks!
A Time of Monsters is an excellent place to start! All the WoD games are meant to be accessible to players who aren’t familiar with the world, but if you want one you can jump right into without a glossary or infodump of lore available via the stats screen, AToM is perfect, since it’s centered on a character who has just learned that vampires really exist - they don’t know any of the jargon or lore yet either.
And if you don’t want to wait for November to take the plunge, you can get started now with The Beast of Glenkildove or Out for Blood, both of which also center on ordinary humans drawn into WoD matters by circumstance.
@MIGSey - Nah, up until last Thursday, there were rumors, but nobody knew except a select few alpha testers.
I’ve been sitting on this for a year and a half and you have no idea how awesome it is to have it out.
Awesome! Yes, I have been worried about the loredumps and being totally lost actually, but it seems that won’t be the case. AToM is definitely in my sights and I’m eager for November to come. For now, I think I’ll check out The Beast of Glenkildove first since it’s also a Hunter: The Reckoning title. Thanks for the recommendations! I appreciate it.
After being glad to reveal Burden of Command and now this, next you’ll tell me you so glad you can release the secret that you are doing a D&D/Warhammer game, five years down the line.
In all seriousness though, congratulations on this.
The Beast of Glenkildove is a great choice! Although you’re still starting as a beginner in the Hunter world, you’ll get to see that world on a somewhat broader scale than you’ll eventually see it in A Time of Monsters, but both games emphasize the camaraderie that develops among fellow Hunters and include a great cast of characters with their own values and agendas. I hope you enjoy them both!
Always happy to play a game that’s set in or roughly present in a modern world. Particularly with the interesting mechanics so far showcased. Not so gamey as to be basically just repeating actions to keep a bar up. But not so shallow as to be ignored because it doesn’t affect story. Rather intrigued to see how they affect the story going forward once the full game releases.
Gotta say though. Two games in such a world releasing soonish is quite nice as someone who isn’t as big on pure medieval style fantasy worlds. A shame it is releasing after halloween. Would be quite a nice spooktober release and gift. Hope success finds both games!
Hm, I made an exception for Glenkildove, but I will probably opt out of these next two. I normally do not play Hunter: The Reckoning. I vastly prefer to play as any of the supernatural denizens of the World of Darkness rather than the humans that would hunt them.
If I do decide to play either of them, I will very much be going down the routes where my PC fully joins the World of Darkness as a Cainite or some other supernatural creature.
If the license expires before Mage: The Ascension and Changeling: The Dreaming arrive upon the stage of 5th Edition, one can only hope that the license will be renewed for some more games from those two lines, when the time comes.
As a loyal Technocrat, Mage: The Ascension is, in many ways, the dearest to me, alongside Demon: The Fallen, though I am also very fond of Vampire: The Masqeurade, of course.
Just so you know, A Time of Monsters definitely has at least one route that you’d be interested in.
I made the same exception for The Beast of Glenkildove even though I don’t usually read HtR. I was excited for it for personal reasons. Without saying too much, I never read it a second time, and I don’t think I’ll be picking up another Hunter title any time soon.
As a faithful Chorister myself, I can at least respect a Technocrat who likes DtF. Seriously though, WtA is without question my favourite. I’m first and foremost a loyal warrior of Gaia, but I really do like the older World of Darkness games like Demon, Wraith, Changeling, and Mummy. Not enough people talk about them.
WtA is also my favorite, followed closely by Changeling, and then Mage, but I will say I did have lots of fun with Beast of Glenkildove, and will at the very least be taking a chance on these games. Love what CoG puts out more often than not. Hoping we get a Mage game, or a Changeling game soon.
