Thought-to-text interface would be great, wouldn’t it?
I cannot tell you how often I have lamented the lack of such a thing!
Today has been a really productive and rewarding day because I’ve worked on and completed both editing feedback items and scripting feedback items. So I have accomplished a lot for the day.
Yet, because none of this was creating actual writing, I feel anxious about not writing.
Doing all the editing and scripting has drained my energy, but I know if I do not end up doing at least a little bit of actual writing, I will start feeling guilt and remorse.
If any of you ever feel the same way, remember you are not alone in your emotions and anxieties.
.
Current mood: creeping up on the end of the chapter like I’m a wrestler stalking their opponent for their finishing move.
Have you considered making a list in physical form on a post-it or something and putting it on your screen or by it? It might help with this fake “oh no I haz done no progress” feeling if you get to draw a line over the non-creative tasks after you do them.
Oh no! Turns out this is your duo partner’s heelflip arc, and they’re coming at you with a surprise chair! The crowd yells to warn you, cos you’re their favourite face, and you turn just in time to be able to react! Quick, what do you do?
(in this scenario, your partner is imposter syndrome or whatever it is related to writing that gets you down, I dunno, man, I’m not you. The chair can still be a chair. Chairs are hard, and they don’t need to be metaphorised to make an impact)
I failed at writing totally today… I was attempting to fill out a job application but flat out couldn’t come up with anything for the cover letter so I missed the deadline
I too did not really write today.
Though in my case, it was because I was playing the new Rogue Trader game, and taking care of my sick partner. And it gave my brain some time to process all the intentional brainstorming and world-building I have been doing for my new project, and quite a few ideas popped into my head organically throughout the day.
It’s important to take breaks from pushing yourself, and to give your brain new input to work with. That is not being lazy, or un-productive.
And it’s also important to remember that there is much more to writing that just putting words to paper/screen, even if word-count is an easy thing to ‘gameify’ and track.
nooo I knew I shouldn’t have trusted their conveniently well timed offer of assistance!
(currently dodging chair: quit trying to create unique miniature scenes and just reuse the ones you already made that lead to the same point, iz you dummy)
I have numbered feedback lists … so yes. Checking off these items and putting a big
across each line-item is rewarding. That is why I start by acknowledging my day has been rewarding and productive.
Yet, my anxiety is writing related, because the only way I keep improving and getting better at writing is to write.
Changing the word “affect” to “effect” on line 1376 in scene 10 just doesn’t affect me the same as writing with regards to “working on my writing.”
I think if I set aside time to even write 500 words tonight, in addition to the other work I’ve done, my mind will chill and allow me to relax.
The pressure to strengthen my writing is definitely put on myself, and there are going to be “non-writing” days like today, but I feel if I can “trick” myself into believing I worked on actual writing, I will not focus on “not writing.”
Sorry if this does not make sense, but it is a reality I must try to deal with for myself.
No apologies necessary; I hope you manage to find the satisfaction you need!
Wonder why they even ask that. They need employees. You need money. That’s the only reason why anyone is having this exchange
While that is my opinion as well (and I’ve yet to see a person who would honestly claim to be enthusiastic about, say, telemarketing), stating it as such tends to disqualify you more often than not.
I was thinking of whether to make my game in choicescript or twine.
One thing I really like about Choicescript is that you post your game in the Cog forums. A lot of people go there and post comments on the game in your thread. I like that. With twine, you don’t have a dedicated forum and community the way that Choicescript games do…
However, I feel that coding in Twine is more intuitive for me. And I like the idea of customizing my own UI.
Trudging, trudging, trudging along the plan towards the finish line of Chapter 1. It feels weird that it ballooned into a few unexpected scenes, but hey, at least I’m doing something and I’m on second point of the plan already.
I haven’t been on here in a while, I just wanted to reach out, since but the my WIPs discussion have been closed out. If you have played the Extreme Ball or PI Heirless Wonder demos, I just wanted to thank you all for the tremendous support.
Unfortunately life has it’s way of getting in the way of creativity and I’ve had to take a step away from any writing what so ever. I don’t want to get into the details, but I hope to get back on creating works again, just right now is not the time.
Fortunately I have a lot of he following chapters pretty much planned for both demos, as well as several other games, and I also write regular books as well. But due to my mental state and personal matters I’ve taken a bit of a hiatus, so apologies to those of you yearning for more material.
I also, wanted to thank this community, you all are great people, even if you have to take a break from creating, never give up. WE ARE DREAMS, WE DON’T EXIST, WE CREATE OUR EXISTENCE. Always look for the light in the darkness.
PS all my works are connected in a multiverse kind of way, no matter if it is sports themed, private investigator themed, or even zombie themed. My grand opus, will actually be where the player explores all the universes and perhaps other authors universes as well.
You can always ask the mods to open your thread, and you don’t have to write. But just talk about your IF just like in INFAMOUS IF (BAND WIP) CHAP 2. P1 OUT (178k words)
The author is not really on the forum, but she still talks about the game!
People can deal with it, mental health is always first. You shouldn’t be under any stress, to give updates. It’s always on your time, all authors write because they wanna write.
Thanks, due to my own inactivity, I’ll probably hold off to ask for it to be reopened. Or just start a new thread when I get to the point I’m ready to update it. Like I said, this is a great community and I’m glad I’m a part of it.
I was trying to write a description for a scene and realized I don’t know the English word for what I was trying to describe… I hate when that happens. Time for some creative searching.
(I mean, it’s the kind of “I know what this thing is, but I don’t know what it’s called, so how on earth am I going to find the right word if all I have is a mental image?” situation. Dictionaries tend to work better with words than ideas.)
If you give us some hints, maybe we can help narrow it down. Forum charades.
Or just throw the word in the language that you DO know into Google Translate and double-check if it’s what it spits out.
Nah, I found it already - I’d have used the translation thing if the word would have been less generic, but that’s where the creative searching comes in.
(The word was apparently “stock”, but you wouldn’t have figured it out from Google Translate. It did actually give the word, but not with the right meaning. Translators are weird.)
