Question of the Week:
Good morning all! As we start a new week, I find myself quite curious:

What is your favorite crime drama and why?

The Departed and Gangs of New York are ones that stick in my mind - I love when the protag gets cozy with the main antagonist - I find it very intriguing and tense.

Oooh, that’s a hard question! A lot of my favorite stories, especially TV shows, have to do with crime in some way. My husband and I were just saying we have to go back and finish watching Better Call Saul, which we especially enjoy because not only is it a fascinating character study and often darkly funny, it takes place where we live and we sometimes recognize filming locations. There are individual episodes of Black Mirror and Poker Face that I’m a little obsessed with. The Godfather (book and first two movies) is the most clichĆ© answer ever, but it’s a classic for a reason. Only Murders in the Building and Pushing Daisies deserve a shoutout as my favorite crime comedies. And Then There Were None is the best mystery, and the end … well, if you know you know. Anything by Gillian Flynn is near the top of the list, too.

I guess I’ll go with Crime and Punishment, because it’s such a deep dive into the psyche, and that’s what just about all of my favorite crime stories have in common, a fascination with what it means to break with what is accepted and acceptable. I don’t speak Russian, but I’ve heard that the word for ā€œcrimeā€ has a resonance that doesn’t really come through in English, a similar etymology to ā€œtransgression,ā€ which underscores the fact of that line being crossed.

Criminal Minds and Sherlock jump out at me. Castle and NCSI are also good

I loved Breaking Bad! Had a hard time with season one of Better Call Saul, but maybe I need to give it another chance.

As for Godfather, hey, cliches are cliches for a reason! It’s good!

I’ll need to give those others a look - that info about Crime and Punishment is very interesting!

Sherlock is a classic for sure - which era do you gravitate toward? Criminal Minds and NCIS were shows my family watched a lot, I remember. Castle I’m unfamiliar with!

My favorite Sherlock Holmes is the modern BBC version. Though it’s hard to find bad Sherlock Holmes. But I think the BBC Sherlock dealt with the relationships and character complexities better than some other adaptations.

Castle is a fun one. It’s about a Crime author who starts observing a female detective for his newest book series. Especially, he acts like a menace, discovers an important piece of information, and falls in love with his muse.

It’s good, the last season drags on, though, but it’s almost necessary to finish the plot lines.
