I really like the setting of Pendragon Rising, as well as some of the characters. I wish it was all fleshed out more, however, and it seemed like there was going to be a sequel, but obviously that’s not happening.

Are there any medieval or fantasy games that are similar to Pendragon Rising, but focus more on characters and story rather than “kingdom management?”

The first and third books of the Lost Heir series focused more on stories and character than management, but book 2 is quite management heavy. Lords of Aswick also focuses on story but has management aspects to it. Champion of the Gods is probably closest to what you’re looking for, but it’s much more story driven than character driven.

So funny - I loved Choice of the Cat. But I’m a pretty intense cat lady, so that game was definitely playing to the Choir.

Can anyone recommend some good medieval/intrigue based games?

I’d love to find something with really in-depth plots and characters. Thanks in advance for any recommendations

I’d suggest War for the West for a more low fantasy setting and Tudor Intrigue for a real world medieval setting. Check out Pendragon Rising for something in a more Arthurian setting, or Lords of Aswick if you want something like War for the West but with a little less emphasis on the management aspect.

The Lost Heir trilogy and The Evertree Saga both draw upon “medieval-y” type fantasy setting tropes. I’m not sure if you’d consider them medieval based, but they are intriguing and have in-depth plots in my opinion.

A great game outside of CoG/HG that is medieval basically played straight is Pillars of the Earth. Fully voice acted, gorgeous art and an excellent plot. Takes place in what is meant to be 12th century England I’m pretty sure. It comes from a book if you love reading.

is there any triad/chinese mafia games that anyone is making or has been made at all?

You’d be better off trying out the WIP Hong Kong Blood Opera. It’s basically what you’re looking for and it’s the only one that’s similar to what you’re asking.

I adored those Choice of Robots and Choice of Magic, and I think I’ll have a hard time to find something that even remotely rivals them; but that’s also because maybe I don’t know better.

I’m not really interested into the purely historical ones and enjoy all the sandbox-like creativity and romance options the aftermentioned games offered, as well as their length and replayability. Any suggestions? I’m into anything sci-fi and fantasy!

Try War of the West or The Great Tournament.

Tin Star doesn’t have supernatural themes (unless you count the Marshal’s way of viewing a certain mystery in the game).

By “no supernatural themes”, does it mean that there are no mentions of anything that is outside of reality (such as a character that believes in ghosts or demons or prophetic dreams, which may or may not exist in the story), or does it mean that the creatures themselves do not appear (as in a ghost or a fairy or a demon is a main character)?

If it is the former, then I agree that Tin Star definitely has a lot of supernatural elements.

Hello there!
It’s my first time starting a topic, and I’m unsure if it’s the right place for that, but I believe so? Please excuse me if it isn’t!

I have been playing a lot of CoG/HG games, and since I made an account here, quite recently, lots of WIPs too. It’s always a blast!
One of the best things about most of these games is the possibility to make MCs with all sorts of sexual preferences and gender identities.
But despite the amount of choice on that matter, I find myself wishing for something very specific I didn’t really see.
EDIT: if it is unclear, I’m asking if people know games with MCs like that, not asking people to make those, obviously.

There are two things, but I’ll start with the one I’m most eager to see in a game.

  • A MC that could be somewhere in the grey, romance wise.
Or, to be more precise, I’d like to be able to create a MC who wouldn’t have previous romantic or sexual experiences, and who never felt attracted to anyone before, but not because they’re ace and/or aro. Basically, someone who doesn’t feel any need for romantic or sexual experiences, but who realizes that maybe, just maybe, there’s that ONE person in the entire world who would be the one for them, whom they’d like to love and/or hold. The “you’re the only one I could love” trope, put to the extreme, with the MC being almost aro/ace, and feeling no need whatsoever for love and sexuality in their life. But totally up (and wanting) for romance, both on the emotional and physical aspects, with one specific person, if they find them.
So, looking for a game where you’d have the option, when prompted to select the preferences of the MC, to say something like “I never felt like engaging with anyone, romantically or sexually, but deep down, I know somewhere, someone is waiting for me. That one person to whom I’d give my heart and my body.”. I have seen games that allow you to play an unexperienced/virgin character, but while that MC would obviously be so, I think you all can see how this is not what I mean. I’ve seen games that allow you to make a MC who simply is unexperienced but that’s it, games where the MC didn’t have the opportunity to engage in relationships, games where the MC fears love and relationships and never had the bravery to take that step… But nothing quite like what I’m looking for. And I think it would make for very interesting and emotional romance related scenes, once they start to realize they found that one person.

  • The other thing I’m looking for is about a specific gender identity. Well, more or less. Most games here allow you to have male, female and non-binary MCs. Some rare games also allow for genderfluid. And, more rarely than the main three genders, but more often than genderfluid, you have the trans option. Within the trans option, some games even allow you to determine if the body fits the identity (yet) or not. But here too, I’d like something very specific that isn’t really trans.
I’m looking for games that allow you to make a MC who is male or female, but doesn’t feel good about their biological identity, WITHOUT wanting to change though.
For example, a male MC who doesn’t feel good being a man, but who doesn’t want to be called a woman, since he still thinks of himself as a man, even if he would have liked not to be.
Basically, a choice along the lines of, “I am a man… but I wish I was born a girl…” instead of, “I am a woman… but I was born a boy…”. See the difference? The character IS a male by all means, body and mind. But he doesn’t like it.
The only thing close to that I have ever found is what Fallen Hero allows you to do, but it didn’t really get anywhere with that, at least as far as the first game goes.

I’m sorry for the very very weird question. I hope it doesn’t make anyone unconfortable. I know I have strange tastes sometimes, but I really like these types of characters, and I find myself frustrated that games with such a variety of identities and preferences don’t seem to really feature any of that.
And well, if no games like that exist then… eh… Authors, feel free to use the ideas! wink wink

EDIT 2: hum, my thread has been moved two times, and now it’s in “game ideas for authors”, but that isn’t the point of it… I was really just asking if games with that do exist… I don’t really know what to do about that… I’ll be glad if that gives ideas to people, but I am looking for game suggestions.

I don’t want to sound rude. But asking for something so much detailed is basically restraint authors in a very very narrow storyline with very fixed personality and actions.

My advice is if you are passionate about that, write your own stories with that Pc premises and romance I am sure that you will have help from the community.
