Beta test the new version of our iOS app

New versions of the apps are available with bug fixes, improved search engine, and a splash screen.

We’re going to roll out the apps to the App Store gradually, starting with the Heart’s Choice app. v4.0.0 is now live in the App Store.

Hi, after updating to the newest public version of Hosted Games. I can no longer continue playing (Fallen Hero: Retribution) as it continuously loads. I have tried restarting and deleting the app but after I hit a certain point in the game it just freezes.

I love the apps and games so I would love to continue playing. Thanks!

Can you send screenshots here or to support@hostedgames.org?

I have sent a screenshot via email. Thanks!

@elk, I think your issue is fixed in the new Hosted Games app version 3.0.3 (2), available now in TestFlight. Give it a try!

Hi thank you! It works now

I downloaded the beta and tried starting the game but it said there was an error with some files and wouldn’t load (continued spinning).

However, when I downloaded the App Store version (non-beta) after that, my game loaded!

In the latest betas, I’ve fixed a bug on iPad where the keyboard would refuse to stay open when typing in text fields while holding the iPad in portrait mode. (You could workaround the bug by holding the iPad in landscape mode, but now, you don’t have to.)

We got a review today of the HG app:

Stories? Mixed in quality, but you can sus out the good ones from the previews. The new UI is glitchy, the assets don’t fit on the screen, and they’re weird disparate shapes. It looks bad and is actively harder to use.

Does anybody know what this is about? “Assets don’t fit on the screen?”

Are there plans to bring the omnibus apps to Steam?

I don’t think the omnibus apps would really work on Steam, since they’re basically portals to purchase and play games, not actually games themselves.

I would like to second this suggestion for the same reason. I’m sure I’ll eventually get used to the new placement of the stat panel, but as a right handed person playing on an ipad it does feel odd to reach all the way across the screen to select choices.

New search options incoming in CoG 5.0.1 (2), HC 4.0.5 (2), HG 3.0.7 (2)!

  • Now you can search and sort games that you’ve added to your Favorites, games that you’ve Purchased, and games that you’ve Downloaded.
    • On the “My Library” screen, you can tap “Search” next to the list of your Favorites to search your favorites on the “Search” tab. (You can also sort your Favorites by rating, release date, etc.) You can search/sort your Purchases in the same way.
    • On the “My Library” screen, there’s a new section, “Downloaded”, which shows you the games that you have downloaded, games that you can play when you’re offline.
    • I’ve also added new “Favorites”, “Purchased”, and “Downloaded” buttons to the Search screen.
  • The CoG app and the HC app have a new “LGBTQ+” search option. All CoG games and many HC games allow you to choose your character’s gender and sexual orientation. The games tagged “LGBTQ+” go above and beyond to showcase queerness and queer relationships.
  • The HC app also has two more new search options, “Polyamory” and “Group Sex.” Games tagged “Polyamory” allow romantic relationships in groups of three or more. “Group Sex” includes sex scenes with three or more people.

P.S. We didn’t add the “LGBTQ+” option to HG because we haven’t picked which games should be in it. Maybe we’ll run a poll on the forum for that…?

One thing I’ve been hoping for, for quite a while now, is a search option for HC that indicates which games can be played without romance.

This release is kinda weird!

We now have “meta achievements” in Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center supports achievements, but it assumes that your app is itself one “game,” not a collection of games. As documented in Achievements in ChoiceScript, Apple puts a limit of 100 achievements per game, and up to 1,000 points of achievements.

The CoG and HG omnibus apps each have hundreds of games, and each of those can have up to 100 achievements. CoG and HG would each have over 5,000 achievements, and even HC would have over 500 achievements, well over Apple’s limit.

So, instead, we’ve created a list of “meta achievements” that apply across multiple games. These achievements ask questions like,

  • How many games have you finished? (In which genres?)
    • In the last X days (1 day? 7 days?)
    • Lifetime?
  • How many times have you replayed the same game (all the way through to the end)?
  • How many games have you “tried” (i.e. made at least one choice)?
    • In the last day?
    • Lifetime?
  • How many choices have you ever made?
  • How many days in a row have you made at least one choice? In other words, how long is your daily “streak”?
  • How many in-game achievements have you unlocked?
    • How many 100-point achievements?
  • In how many games have you unlocked all of its achievements?

We went to some effort to ensure that you can unlock all of these “meta achievements” without paying us any money. For example, we ask that you finish only three fantasy games to unlock the “Fantasy Hero” achievement, even though we have way more fantasy games than that, but we only have so many free fantasy games.

Backing up game progress and achievements in Game Center

I think some users may find it a bit surprising to find that if you reinstall the app from scratch, all of your game progress remains. If you play up to Chapter 4 of a game, reinstall, and resume playing the game, you’ll resume the game in Chapter 4, right where you left off.

I think this is a good thing, but if you truly want to reset a game progress (including in-game achievements), you’ll have to do that in the Settings → Troubleshooting menu. Hopefully, that will be a very rare occurrence!

Naturally, we’ll also back up all of your in-game achievements and your meta-achievement progress. We’ll do something similar in the Android version of the app, where having achievements and cloud saves will become a requirement of the Google Play Level Up program in 2026.
