I know I’m nitpicking here, but I wanted to help with this WIP, so I went back through BR and found a few typos/spelling issues:
- “We’re going after him, of course, but first thing is first (first thing first)… a promotion.”
- You resist the urge to jump on him, if only because his new form is more… forwardly sexy thank (than) Mr. Park and you don’t want to make this situation more of a spectacle than it already is.
- . “Nothing,” you tell him firmly, flexing your hands and feeling you*®* magic pulse through your fingers.
- He seems surprised to feel your hand on his wrist, but pulls you close enough that he’s at least one of the damp, warm bodies your (you’re) flush against.
- (a truly nefarious sort of higher power of (for) a woman old enough to be known as a crone).
- "And no, Maureen, the incessant behaviour policing isis (delete, or change the sentence to ‘is a skill’) seems to be a skill taught at SignetWorks rather than a consequence of my connection to this obnoxious human urn."
- You were thinking it, he shoots back angrily, briefly interrupting the guilt waterslide you’d just been spiraling down on; like one of those big bowl shaped ones that just gradually flush*(s)* you
- He clearly notes your frown, on your face because is he really so opposed to some strangers passingly assuming that the two of you are an item? Delete on your face, or delete your frown change it to the frown on your face
Also, when we get to the end of the current demo, we’re supposed to see Maureen’s notes for Tuesday (Tuesday vision), Wednesday, and Friday, right? Because I’ve gotten only the Wednesday note, the Wednesday and Friday notes, and all of them in my different playthroughs.
It’s not a spelling issue, but are we supposed to assume that Siruud found our new ID or something? When you first meet him you only tell him your first name, but in the grocery store he’ll call you by your surname:
He’s teasing you and it’s not appreciated in the face of what was already going to be an enormous bill; he needs more food than you can provide, and you have to assume he can’t hunt without you there. You’d rather avoid it. “I’ll handle it, Jones, stop fretting.”
What made you decide to make Bad Ritual interactive fiction rather than a traditional novel?

Thank-you for the corrections !! I fixed most of them (I think I kept like one or two because I liked the way they sounded); sometimes I just get to typing too quick to read what I’ve done
And there is no Friday achievement? There’s one for a Tuesday, one for the following Monday, and then one for the subsequent Wednesday: they’re technically achievements, so they’re not marking the individual chapters so much as they mark major milestones. This past chapter was more of an establishing chapter: nothing really concretely happened.
Also realistically in one’s apartment and building as a whole, it’s very easy to find out a person’s last name. If you’d like to think your MC stood strong in their conviction that they should hesitate to tell Siruud their full name, I can look around my apartment right now and find at least three different ways to find out my last name just laying around. So if he wasn’t outright told, then he just picked it up without your input
And BR is interactive fiction rather than traditional novel for a couple of reasons: one, because I really like interactive fiction and conceptualized it as such from the start. Also I’m sort of bad at sticking with novel writing: it frustrates me a lot, because it’s not cut up into the nice, formatted parts like code is. And then there’s just personal experience: one of the games set to be worked on after Manor Hill and Bad Ritual (called Hybrid) I converted into a novel for publishing and then the publisher ghosted me entirely. It was annoying and sort of embarrassing, so I prefer the control I have over my games.

Oh, yeah, I probably messed up the days. And the last name thing makes sense, I just wanted to make sure you intended it to be that way. It makes sense you’d prefer this kind of format as a game designer, but your publisher ghosted you?
Yeah it was actually. Part of my degree program was a class that was like… also an internship at the school publisher, and part of our grade was doing a book pitch that would potentially get picked up. And I was told that mine was picked up but I couldn’t sign a contract until I graduated (like, a couple months from that point) because of the conflict of interest getting grades from the company publishing me would be.
So I graduated and sent a couple emails like “happy April, y’all wanna talk?” and never heard from the school again except for obnoxious alumni emails and begging for recommendations on behalf of teachers I didn’t like. BUT that just means once my two current games are finish, you all get to play that game too.
