Are COG Readers Tired of Fantasy Games?

They tend to. Hence why i like some of them.

Iā€™m with you on this, so tired of the preordained/chosen one stories. And this isnā€™t just an issue for CoG. Itā€™s just soā€¦boring and overused at this point. And nobody is putting a good spin on it.

Slightly lower on my ā€œtired ofā€ list is Isekai. Iā€™m not saying some people canā€™t put a good spin on it. But its becoming ever increasingly a vehicle for the lazy. And the
double gut blow combo is Isekai+chosen one.

ā€œYou have been summoned Hero, to do battle with the insert evil. Only you can save us, as has been foretold by the ancient texts. But you must find the magical McGuffin or we are all doomedā€

I love Fantasy, but the above scenario is becoming an infestation of brainrot story telling. I find myself spending more hours trying to find a good fantasy book than actually reading nowadays.

Iā€™m self aware enough to know Iā€™m most likely the issue nowadays. My tolerances for an acceptable story have become ever increasingly higher. Hell I believe I have almost 500 books on Audible alone, and shelfs filled with physical books. But at the same time I can go back and read or listen to old stories and still enjoy myself. Maybe its just nostalgia though

I thought itā€™s been that way forā€¦ at least last twenty years? At least thatā€™s what my social circle at that time was saying.

(And I still like plotting chosen one stories. Go figure.)

I know I can still enjoy it, but most being put out nowadays just feel like Iā€™m reading the same story opening over and over.

For me, it really depends on the story. The main thing i look for is character development. I want to feel as if i am actually dealing with real people, whether they be single moms, college athletes, spies, shady criminals, lich lords, or vampires. In high fantasy stories, i really appreciate world development. Immerse me in a world i could never see in real life. In slice of life stories, make the world relatable to me. Make it comfortable to slip into, like my favorite shoes. I love all of the genres in CoG.

In my opinion itā€™s always been a matter of originality. On the one hand itā€™s an over saturated market. However, if you have an original concept like @NumberedEntity you will succeed. As is evident by the success of ā€œAn Unexpectedly Green Journeyā€ during its WIP run.

Then again, there will always also be the audience who wants more of the same, because thatā€™s what they like.

I mean, considering millions just have a PS5 for just Call of Duty, only?!

So yes, I agree with @LiliArch
An audience will be there.

Thereā€™s certainly a market for it however oversaturated it might be. But personally, aside from a few projects that are particularly well thought out Iā€™m as sick of it as I am sick of all the Capeshit games. Though I will say that whenever the Fantasy isnā€™t of the Medieval variety it brings a slight smile to my face.

I always have room in my library for a good game regardless of genre.

Maybe this would have worked better as a pollā€¦ At least speaking for myself, Iā€™m not tired of Fantasy. There are some themes and tropes in the genre that have been overused, but not in COG, mostly in other mediums, like comics.
Honestly, stories set in modern times doesnā€™t really appeal to me that much.

Hmm? Iā€™d say it succeeded despite its original concept and style. Thereā€™s a reason why there are so many similar concept games. Thatā€™s what the CSG audience wants, so thatā€™s what authors are tending to write. Itā€™s well known that writing in unpopular genres or not including certain things (like romance) are good ways to tank any chance of your game getting attention.

The only good twist Iā€™ve EVER seen on it was the movie Unbreakable, where someone had a ā€œpreordainedā€ role as a villain as well.

As much as I hate to admit it, Iā€™m part of this problem. While I prefer something new and original, I do still purchase most CoG products that get released as long as they are reasonably competently written, so itā€™s not like Iā€™m voting with my wallet.

No, I love medieval fantasy, I donā€™t like games based on modernity or the future.

If itā€™s done with good quality writing then Iā€™m fine with practically any genre.

All things considered, I prefer fantasy. Dragons, demons, vampires, secret societies, evil wizards, and so on, although I do appreciate a more realistic take in these stories. You can give me a LOTR high fantasy or an ASOIAF low fantasy, and I will enjoy both. If I wanted a slice of real life, I would just open my door and step outside, to be honest.

Slice of Life doesnā€™t have to be exactly like your life or anotherā€™s life. It simply means a setting that is or was in the grounds of reality. I could write a game set in turn of the century Galway, Ireland and if itā€™s realistic then I would be happy using slice of life to describe it as much as historical or romance/drama.

Slice of life can be in any setting. Deep Space Nine has many slice of life stories.

Itā€™s just a slice of everyday life for someone, wherever that life is. Not some grand adventure, not some earth-shattering plot. Just perspective of what the usual daily drama of their experience is. Doesnā€™t matter whether itā€™s focused on a barista in Portland or following one of the background extras in the lower decks of the Enterprise.
