April 2021's Writer Support Thread

Starting as I mean to go on! 1,200 words written tonight - Really pleased with myself as I was wiped after work and needed a long bath and a little nap to get my brain functioning again.

Four day weekend ahead of me and I want to write at least 3 times as much on each of those days which should be around about enough to get a contest entry in submittable shape (I’m not sure when I’m editing or playtesting it though…)

My goal for April is to finish Chapter 2, create new character art and update the existing ones to finally get rid of the placeholders (and maybe a handful of future characters too), and to finally get a Tumblr and Discord up and running.

Oh, and it’d also be nice if I can figure out how to create a working secret code/puzzle for a mystery I’m working on.

As I did not meet my goal of publishing a WIP in March, I’ll copy this to April. My game got a bit more complex, but I hope it will turn out for the best. Mostly rewriting at the moment and not as much time this month as I had in March but this is doable

@lisamarlin Which idea did you go for in the end? Is it a continuation of the Wopua story?

No, it’s something completely different as I thought this would be an easier story to get more experience with coding. I’m not sure if I am correct but sticking with it now

The story will be about the search for Dr Livingstone in East Africa. Having almost 15k words now and close to putting a WIP up.

Speaking from lots of experience, both my own annd helping many others… I do suggest waiting until you have at least 30,000 words per play through before making a WiP.

There are a lot of reasons I suggest this, but the most important being 30,000 is usually the minimum needed to be able to get constructive, useful feedback on.

Yes I understand this, but I do think for me it would be very useful to get initial feedback at this stage (if people are willing to give it). This will be very helpful for me to gauge interest and if people have ideas I can incorporate them now, which will be much more difficult to do after the 30K mark. This will be an early WIP with no save file, so it really will be up to people if they’re willing to play it and give feedback - if not, no big deal. I have seen other stories posted with only 5k words which I agree is too short, but in my case I have a solid basis set, as you will see (or hop on later once I reach 30k ;))

A warning be prepared to a very possible outcome of nobody giving you feedback at all. Recharging your thread each five second to see that there is no message. It is the worst feeling you can have and it destroys your soul and desire to write again. I know it really well what is that feeling. So please, be sure to be ready to face that eventuality… or you will end destroyed and crying like I am.

I set a tentative April goal of 5K words, each, for my two CSG projects. Sometimes, word count stalls because the work of editing or testing code takes up a bulk of my writing time, but the general spirit of things is to keep working alternately on these two projects, and leave other projects on the back-burner, for the moment.

So I changed my CHOMP entry two days before the deadline. I currently have 2,461 words done

Well, I wish you luck. I am near 30k… But I am not sure about Presenting the game to contest even if just need fixing few minor things and some endings.

I am not sure about the overall quality and I don’t want make the ridicule.

I am trying to gather all my willpower and bravery to joining the contest.

I like many people with anxiety find more dificult make something public that writing or drawing the project.

I see each time I do it as a step forward. But It is never easy.

Happy April everyone!! Hopefully this will be a productive yet restorative month for all of us. Good luck to all the CHOMP writers!

I am working currently on my first WIP–one unexpected joy is the coding. I took a class in high school and really liked it, but I didn’t think I would have as much fun tinkering with CS code as I am, which has been very nice. Besides getting more familiar with the coding possibilities, my goal is 10k words by the end of April!

It feels pretty achievable, though any fellow uni students are probably feeling the same looming deadlines as me. Lots of final projects and whatnot are due in April with finals in early May, so I’ll have to find a good balance between studying and writing.

(also @Ellery I’m so impressed that you hand-write your projects! I don’t have the stamina or the focus, after five minutes I’d just start doodling haha!)

@poison_mara I think being able to churn out 30k words in time for CHOMP at any level is admirable all the same. Please don’t talk yourself out of publishing it, because you’re right–it really would be a step forward. Best of luck!

I’m so green with envy right now, you have no idea. Every time I run Quicktest a little piece of me dies inside.

Felt. Midterms for me, but yeah–hardly an ideal month for writing.

Godspeed to us all!

With practice you will handle most of coding. You don’t have to know a lot of scripting for basic projects that can be very effective. I am not a great code either.

But you can only improve. I recommend you participate in small demos. You can use the workshop for that

Good afternoon everyone! First time posting on this thread haha.

I recently started a project that was my obsession by the end of 2019, but got pushed back to the side lines because of covid… But now i’m practically on fire, with a self set goal of 1000 words per day, that until now i’ve been able to meet. I’ve already created a tumblr for the project and a few side stories and character sheets for my Patreon page, so i’m really confident that by the end of the month i’ll be able to share the result with you guys.

In this story you assume the role of death itself, that was justly or unjustly imprisoned by their fellow gods. It’s a very somber world with a few sprinkles of comedy here and there, and is very centered around romance, which is my favorite topic of IFs. So, wish me luck hahah.

Fellow Uni student here! This is my last year and it’s definitely crunch time so I feel you. We can do this though. I’m cheering for you!

This month’s goal remain the same as those of March for me, Chapter 3 for AToH. The outline and my ideas for it grew way beyond my expectations as I got some feedback, and it’s likely on its way to be the largest chapter so far, which is a… daunting idea, considering I already broke 50,000 words and I’m barely beginning to get into the meat of the story.

Aside from that, a stretch goal would likely be to get some decent work on Chapter 4 done, and perhaps to share my story a bit more, to get more diverse feedback from others. I love what people have said and suggested so far, but I’d also love some different perspectives.

I usually go for a thousand, but I’m not sure if there’s a proper rule of thumb somewhere.
