A Tale of Heroes (WIP) - 224k words. Updated 29/01/2025!

Don’t worry, this is… probably the only reference to Crusader Kings we’ll have in the game. :stuck_out_tongue:

If anything, you’re not going to exactly get what the point of it is until Chapter 9 and 10.

Besides, wrong time period, anyway!

The ‘backdrop’ of AToH is 100% based on the Colonization of the Americas, but we’re dealing with a much more advanced society doing it.

And, of course, Kali’s going to prove Wilhelm Trapp horribly right about it all.

Good, Good. I didn’t think you’d have people turning into polar bears anyway… right?

I’m here with a very late update feedback post. First, though I think I said it earlier in the thread aswell: Great update. Really enjoyed the direction and the overall vibe of the scenes, along with the little interactions that were added in.

Now, the feedback -
image
Perhaps a smarts option here could be to cautiously/confidently do what gloria says, since you figured out what his rough plan is? Might be nice to have an ‘Aye aye sir’ option as well, just to flesh out your characters relationship with gloria when in charge of his safety.

image
I think you could change the ‘says’ into something more powerful, just to really get the shift in aki’s demenour really clear.

image
I think i mentioned this on the discord (which people should join by the way) but this is a great chance for a small aki rom line or two
image
Same here, a hug or a hand squeeze (whichever works for how you imagine the relationship) feels kinda natural in that kinda situation.

image
This was a while ago, but I remeber finding this confusing. You mention several people moving and use he’s and they’s a lot in the scene, so I think i got lost in who it was referring to here.

Thats my short, 6am writeup feedback. I’ll make a post with the more gritty typos and the like a bit later

Overall though, I loved the update. Great job, and i’m excited for the next chapters!

This actually was in my first draft for the chapter, I have no idea how I missed writing the option to agree with him, but someone else’s brought it up too, and I’ll be adding it when I do a fine-tuning update after school takes my cuffs off. Goddamn penal codes…

The scene did sit a little wrong with me when I wrote it, but I guess that’s what I get for writing at 2 AM.

I think I can reword it better now, though. The important bit of the scene is having Seeker be the one that deals with the big nutjobs of the Cult, and I think I can get there with some clearer wording.

Noted on the Aki stuff, too. I think I can squeeze in a comment or two if you’re in a relationship. Maybe not in those scenes, but I figure I’ve got a few spots where it’d fit to show some concern or try to have you reassure each other.

This is, after all, the first time either of you has been directly involved in someone dying.

Expect that to be a thing when your thoughts on Gloria are defined.

I’m pretty excited for Chapter 6, myself. Writing action scares me a bit, I always worry it comes off dry or hard to follow, but I think I have a good grasp for writing conversations and the political stuff in the next chapter.

Apropos of nothing, you guys ever hear of a place called Cuba?

I’m pretty sure this is the first time I ever heard someone worry that their actions sequences are dry, but BOY OH BOY those political scenes!

If you’re giving me “you get to demolish the human rights violation that is Gitmo” for my birthday, I’m buying three copies of this game.

Well, it’s the fault of my trade, really. :stuck_out_tongue: I have to deal with politics and international stuff a lot because of what I’m studying, so I feel more confident writing about that stuff.

And besides, I get to push my agenda write character interactions a lot more easily when they’re discussing politics or just the general going-ons of the world, which is my favorite part of the story.

Never say I don’t do anything for you. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

But consider this: What is another island nation that doesn’t want to submit to America’s will, has an economy super reliant on trade, and is seemingly earning the ‘righteous’ fury of the glorious US of A?

If I say Britain, will you slap me?

(I’m guessing Crete for the real anwser)

Gloria and Arthur are brothers from different mothers, they’d never end up at odds. Besides, Arthur is perfectly content being at America’s side, let them reap the bad rep from whatever they do and Britain reaps the fun profits. Works for everyone!

Now, Arthur’s constituents not liking what he’s doing, that’s a whole other thing…

Can I ask where Arthur’s constituency is? Also does he belong to the Tories, Labour or one of the fringe parties? Sorry if I’m demanding a lot off you but it’s nice to see a brit in fiction who appears rather decent.

It’s no problem, I like talking about the world situation and such, even if I know it’s not the most interesting part of the story to most people. As long as someone asks, I’ll be glad to offer info.

That said, the answer to your question is a bit complicated. I’ve mentioned the AToH world is a bit ‘fairer’, or I guess more ‘left-leaning’ because the consequences of failing to pacify the populace are so much greater, but besides that, a lot of the nitty gritty stuff isn’t set fully in stone.

Basically, the political parties of the real world don’t exist in AToH. The policies may be a bit similar (in which case, Arthur is actually similar to Eden and MacMillan), but there’s rarely a 1:1 comparison that can be made between RL politics and AToH stuff.

Arthur wants the Commonwealth to remain and to be strengthened, he believes in as close an association with the United States as possible, and…

And he’s given up on Continental Europe. The match for supremacy over Europe is between France and Germany. He wants no part in it.

Also, now that I’m on my PC:

Ding-dong, we have a winner. Here’s a prize:

“And if they do not?” a reporter asks, a redhead with what sounds like an Irish accent. “What will you do if Washington does not relent? If the conflict escalates?”

The diplomat takes a second to formulate an answer, but when he opens his mouth, he is pulled out of the way.

An older woman, maybe in her 40s, takes his place. She’s in uniform, you note, with what seems like a crown with two swords below it on her collar, her posture as straight as a rod. Her eyes are the color of pure gold, with slits reminiscent of a cat.

“The Byzantines,” she says, and puts up one finger. “The Italians.” Another finger goes up. “And the Reich.” Three fingers now, which she shows to the cameras, before leaning onto the podium with her other hand. You think you can see it crack.

“That is three eagles we have plucked out of his sky. And if it pleases America…” she finally says as her fingers curl to make a fist and her lips peel back to show a pair of fangs, “… They are welcome to be the fourth.

Either you typo’d here, or this is a VERY telling “his”.

I recall seeing a picture of a future character, Iris, on Tumblr, where it appeared that she might have fangs (though it could have just been more-pronounced canines). Is there a family connection between this character and the old woman speaking above?

Nice catch, but no, they aren’t related. The fangs were more a limitation of the engine I used for the image.

The older woman above is Daphne Kyriakou, the Fleet Admiral of Crete’s Navy. The Navy is the senior-most service in Crete, so she is basically the top dog when it comes to military matters. The above is as much a statement from the Cretan President as it is a reaffirmation of intent from the whole of Crete’s Armed Forces.

They do know each other, though. Iris respects Daphne more than a lot of powered she knows (except for Cossack, maybe).

That said, you’ve touched upon a fun thing, and that’s something I think I’ve mentioned on the Tumblr before but not here: The descendants of powered can often get the ‘aesthetic’ characteristics of their parents, even if they aren’t powered.

For example, Lat’s purple hair comes from a long gone ancestor (her mom has purple hair, too), and if Mars ever has kids, they’d inherit his red eyes, though not his powers.

Thank you! It makes me very happy to hear you’ve enjoyed the story, probably the best message I can get whenever I log onto the forums.

Of course, if you have any thoughts or questions, always feel free to ask, and I’ll do my best to answer them as thoroughly as I can.

Also, uh, to everyone else, I have a bit of a favor to ask of you all. It’s simple, I think, but if any of you have any references of Byzantine or North African clothing (preferably from the 10th century), I’d really appreciate it if you could share it here in the thread (or through a DM, or the Discord, or however you feel most comfortable).

…I have no reasons to ask for this, by the way. Certainly has nothing to do with the story.

It’s just, uh, you know…

… Curiosity. I want to get rid of a cat.

Broken King really hasn’t updated his drip in centuries, smh.

To be fair, the King has had to get used to modern clothes, because of the necessity to not stand out too much (he’s still kind of a “HUH, wonder what that guy’s about” person). The Queen’s the one that obviously doesn’t follow modern fashion.

Not that she wouldn’t find jeans ass-backwards if she ever got a pair, of course…

This is more for a personal commission I’m getting. Y’all will see it when Chapter 9 drops, in at least a few months.
