This is actually something that can already sort of happen!
If you don’t invite anyone to dance in Chapter 2, Lat will show up to your room in Chapter 4 and ask to hang out. She’ll confess to her feelings (probably the second scene I’m most proud of in that chapter), and one of the possible answers for the MC is to admit they have also been head over heels for her for months.
There might be something like it too at the end of the game. I’m still debating whether it’ll be an Ignismancer situation only or if I’ll make it also available for an MC with no RO at that time, but there’s going to be an option at the penultimate chapter where you and Lat can finally ‘spit it out’.
I have to admit my knowledge of the Mecha genre is woefully poor, but based on the few games I played, I’d say Kyosuke Nanbu is a good fit for the King.
So yes, you can play your hot-blooded dude with a penchant for one liners, I assure you you’ll get along.
Been a bit since I posted. I still need to review it, but I’m working at least 8 more hours this week before I do. Going to ask two questions, one worldbuilding, one fluff character thing:
To what extent have the Taino people managed to stay alive into the present of the ATOH-verse, and how prominent are they in Carribean politics?
And, because I’ve got noodles on the brain thanks to recieving a vaeiety pack in the mail:
Any of the cast a fan of instant noodles? If so, what brands?
So, this depends a bit on the specific country, as well as when the colonization of their lands happened.
Hispaniola was the first settlement in the Americas, as well as the first site of resistance against Spanish colonization. Due to having the longest period of interaction with the Spanish, the sickness and armed conflict hurt their populations the most. Tainos as an ethnic group still exist, but they’re amongst the most ‘diluted’, so to say, having the most intermarriage with African slaves and Spanish colonists. Most of the country’s population can still point to having some Taino blood (as more than a few can irl), but it’s very mixed with the immigrant groups.
Cuba is somewhat better than Hispaniola, as the proper colonization of the island happened afterwards, where people like Hatüey (a Hispaniolan cacique) warned them about the colonists, and Spain had accepted that they had to be more flexible and less genocidal-esque (though they were still atrocious, as Lat and Nova’s comments in Chapter 4 imply).
Puerto Rico is a bit screwed, being one of the smallest islands (and thus having a smaller population), but they are saved by the fact that the ‘center’ of the Taíno religion is in Puerto Rico, and thus quite a few Tainos moved to the island in an attempt to be closer to their gods.
Aside from the main three, the Lesser Antilles are relatively screwed.
This is because of the fact that the Spanish did get to them first, and thus they helped modernize the islands somewhat, getting them into more of an equal footing with Europe.
That, however, is a problem, because it meant a better capacity to resist when the British and French took the islands from Spain, and thus they earned worse reprisals. The Kalinago, for example, suffered quite a bit, and their population isn’t much larger than it is in the real world.
As far as integration with politics go, they’re best represented in Cuba and Hispaniola (the two of them being nations that violently broke ties with Spain/France), while the Tainos living in the Commonwealth (or just recently being under British suzerainty) are less so, having been treated as second-class citizens until the Decolonization period of the British Empire following World War 2.
Incidentally, Kali Taona’s name is based upon the natives of the Caribbean:
‘Kali’
‘Ta’
‘Ona’
You may also note that Forlorn’s commission references both Caonabo and Hatüey, two caciques of Hispaniola that died fighting against the Spanish colonizers.
Instant noodles aren’t that big a thing here in the DR, so I’ll have to ask for a moratorium on the brands, but as far as liking them, both Latooni and Ignis are big fans!
Latooni is a fan because, as she mentions, she can’t cook at all, so noodles are her go-to when she has to make a meal for herself. Her mom actually complains about this, saying she’s ‘falling into stereotypes’ and ‘that’s not a healthy diet’, but her dad sneaks her a few of his favorite packs (he is also a fan) whenever they send her a package. They compare notes on which ones they like best.
Ignis’s reason is a bit similar, though it’s changed recently. She didn’t know how to cook for herself when she went to boarding school, so noodles were her quick-fix for a while, but as I’ve mentioned in an ask or two (I think), she has a ‘destress’ period before coming in and dealing with the rest of the League after her day, normally done by venting to Seeker. They’ve gotten into the habit of preparing noodles to eat while they’re talking (or Ignis talking and Seeker listening, anyway), since they’re easy to make and it helps her relax.
Also, if Victoria ever had instant noodles, she’d probably like them, too. She’s helpless on the homemaking front, so ‘easy to make, hard to fuck up’ is right up her alley.
I mean, there’s only one acceptable brand of Instant Noodles in the UK, and that’s the Super Noodles although their also split into the chicken lovers and the curry lovers. [
I’m less able to handle spices than I should be (to my father’s great chagrin, I fear), so I suppose I’m on the chicken side.
Oh, but speaking of someone that’s been having late night dinners of instant noodles ever since she started double-majoring, here’s a short article from Professor Adams about… something that you’re all going to learn a lot about soon:
TL;DR: Gloria’s cousin pulled his hair as a kid and has yet to stop, and Crete’s too enamoured with the Monarchs to not make their government an off-shoot of them.
Methinks her mom never met her roommate cause that boy can cook, a fact Lat very much takes advantage of. As can be established if you say the mc can cook at the mansion.
The Royal Navy? No, not particularly. I’ll admit I’m not a perfect source regarding British adventures in the Mediterranean, but Crete’s area of interest was unconnected from GB (and Britain was happy that Crete was independent from the Ottomans, since it meant a possible bulwark).
They did come to blows once, during Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt. A battle between France and Britain happened really close to Cretan shores, and Cretan merchants ended up in the crossfire. A Cretan naval squadron showed up and ended the battle, and the British, not really caring that much about a third of the line ship that had been half-hammered to kingdom come offered it to Crete as ‘indemnities for damages caused’, hoping it’d make them more partial to Britain in the wars.
GB actually cut Crete a break during the Greek War of Independence, in which the nascent Greek kept demanding that Crete do an Enosis, to which Crete refused, and Britain (alongside France, and against Russia) went “no means no”.
There’s a subset of Cretans that don’t really like Britain due to World War 2 and the subsequent Suez Crisis, though it’s not a large number to cause any issues beyond supporting the already popular Cretan isolationism.
As far as liking other European nations, Crete’s favorites are honestly the Scandinavian countries, for… arguably unfair/shitty reasons.
Hey, Adams gets to give a lecture!
That’s proof he’s a nice guy.
Totally, but her mom also complains about that anyway. ‘You should be self-sufficient, I was at your age!’ (she was not. She’s a Claire Dunphy.)
No, Aki’s mom wasn’t a perfect mother, but she was never a strict or demanding one. She perfectly understood that Aki was happy locked up in her room, watching videoshows or playing with her three wings full of toys.
And while Aki didn’t precisely get along with all members of her family, her behavior was never part of the tension.
See, when you’re born into as much privilege and prestige as Aki was, you… kind of no longer play by any rules.
You arguably don’t even live in the same world.
Nobody cares what weird interests Aki may have, or the fact that you could only see her in the most important of functions. AShe’s a member of that family, but she is far enough from the line of succession that she doesn’t get the spotlight put on her. As long as she can smile, walk straight, and sit on a chair and eat by herself, she’s set.
Aki’s shyness is… natural, it’s a part of her that wasn’t borne from bullying or trauma or anything, but it has grown a fair bit since she was brought to the League. This is because she is, for the first time in her life, actually dealing with responsibility and the fact that her actions may have consequences- a fact she is keenly aware of (Aki was insulated, not dumb. She was second in her grandfather’s rankings for who should come after him, though she never knew it and never will). You did notice that she mentions ‘having a job’ when you’re having dinner in Chapter 4, right?
Aki’s thing is that she has never had to make her own decisions. Her being born with the blood and last name she has, her being brought to the League, everything Forlorn does for her now, everything he keeps from her, this has never been up to her.
Aki’s life from birth to 19 was better than yours or that of anyone else in the League. She has lived a more carefree and privileged life than you ever will.
But she has never been the one in charge of it.
The problem with Ignis’s mom is that she has never shown herself to be anything else than what she is. You’re gonna see a fair bit of her in Chapter 7 (and you’re gonna hate her if you’re romancing Ignis), but Mama Coltello has always been entirely transparent on who she is, how Ignis falls so short of that, and how poorly she views both Ignis’s ‘adventures’ and the rest of the League (except for the Seekers, actually, which she begrudgingly acknowledges).
The problem with Ignis’s mom isn’t that she got her act together after having the Heir/Child (which is the way in which both of Ignis’s parent refer to her- not Laura. Never Laura), the problem is she does have her act together, and everything Ignis does shows that she does not.
Nova’s mom did want him to be like her, but not out of the same desire Claire has. It’s a… different sort of situation, there. Claire wants her kids to excel, and she pushes them to do that.
Nova’s mom also wants him to excel, but she also wants him to not cause drama.
Now imagine grabbing a kid, and ever since he was capable of understanding you, telling him ‘you can’t be like that, you’re being a problem’.
But, speaking of Boy Wonder, guess who just got a super incredible commission of him done by Erineas!
The Broke Genius
Nova. The prodigal son, Oppenheimer reborn, one not born strong…
Also, my friend @lovinglydull has actually commissioned some fan art of Lat and Seeker, two pieces that I find hilarious:
Next up on the docket, we’ll be getting Mars, and that’ll be the whole cast. After that, I have two plans, the first of which is another illustration for the game (this one representing Book One, which is getting its own subtitle: ‘The King’s Return’), and what I want to be the ‘app logo’ (and probably my profile picture everywhere) for the game.
If you want a guess at what the second one will be like, here’s a hint.
Note, for the record, that the cast doesn’t know Forlorn is keeping secrets from Aki. You’ll learn the truth at exactly the same time Aki will, more or less.
About the overprotectiveness, you’ll have a chat with Forlorn if you’re romancing Aki in Chapter 6. It’ll come up for a second, and you’ll get to talk to him about it.
Who knows, he may even be honest when you do.
No, I guess not.
Still, bit of a difference between “your job sucks and is only a distraction from what truly matters” and “Oh, come on, you took the participation trophy because the one you so obviously wanted didn’t fall for you batting your eyes once?”
Yes!
It’s a bit tragic, in a way.
It is.
I can’t explain how yet, but ‘Sunset Invader’ is a reference to Crusader Kings 2.
One of its DLCs is called Sunset Invasion. It’s about the Aztecs invading Europe.
That’s not… precisely the problem here (Nova’s family only moved to the US after Nova joined the League, it was one of the requests he made to Ignis), but it’s a similr situation.
Think more ‘parents growing up under the spectre of fading authoritarian leaders’, as so much of America had to do during the last two or three decades of the 20th century.
