Did the King ever accidentally Tsunami Portugal. I think he’d have a low opinion on starting the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade?
Feels like the UK and the US would be at the same sea level than Atlantis if that were his MO.
The King dislikes slavery with a passion, but the rest of the world isn’t really his concern. He might have been from northern Africa, but he had no love for his continent. Crete never joined in, which was enough for him.
He was never much interested in changing the world, anyway.
That’s not to say he didn’t help some, of course. When the Haitian Revolution happened, he was in the island, and while he didn’t dare take the right of victory from the Haitians, the French did get that same ‘divine message of God’ to bugger off.
France never did get to demand payment for Haiti refusing to be slaves in this universe, either. Their ships demanding such never really made it to Haiti, which is part of why Haiti and the DR are more ‘second-world’ nations in this universe than solely abused third world gnats.
I once again find myself wondering why don’t we just help the King fix the Queen and then hand them the keys to the world.
“On an elm tree in the garden there sits a cicada. In song, it thirsts for the clear dew, unaware of the mantis ready to pounce from behind.”
Enter the oriole.
I mean personally the guy sounds nice especially when it concerns how he acts and believes around the queen. But personally i’d prefer the chaos of the world rather than having two essentially “Gods” standing above all and at the flick of a wrist end whoever and whatever they want. Fair enough the world isn’t perfect by no means, however under two all powerful beings the chaos of humanity that is central to who we are as a species and drives us to move ever forwards would be stifled and restricted. For example any discussions contrary to what was enforced by the Autarch would be put down completely most likely, that’s not to even mention the innate desire of people to act freely which drove the numerous revolutionary movements to break free from the empires of Britain and France, which would create numerous issues if the two ruled the world.
That wasn’t the “innate desire of people to act freely”, it was the fact that the British and French empires continuously fucked those people over very, very hard, with no lube.
Okay bad example, but I think the central point still stands Historically people do not like to be ruled by authoritative powers especially when they are not even culturally, religiously, or ideologically similar.
Eeeeh. We can always ask the jews if they preferred Cyrus’s Achaemenid rule or the much more cultural, religious, and ideologically similar medieval age christian one.
I mean, my entire stance is that the differences between the apparent ideology of the Queen (the King doesn’t really feature in this) and everyone else’s makes the Queen a much better ruler. I’m not sure the Monarchs had any influence on the first two, besides the obvious cultural effect that every ruler has, so they were probably featured… on… actually, huh.
Funny.
The Monarchs were, well, monarchs. Long-reigning ones. How come nobody knows shit about them? How come every tourist and diplomat that ever visited Crete doesn’t know about them? How is there not a big honking statue of the Monarchs in the capital plaza? No busts? How are their faces not in coinage, not in paintings? How are these two not on HISTORY BOOKS?
That’s…actually a really good point. Now fair enough I’m not entirely sure about the actual history of the world or the timeline of events. But my guess would be two potential realities. The first and probably the more realistic one would be that perhaps the island of Crete went through a period of Iconoclasm similar to what occurred in the Eastern Roman Empire where images both political and religious were destroyed or defaced heavily. (Though this still has issues as I imagine the queen’s guard would consider this a big no-no). Or that even though the King and Queen were so heavily influential, because of the long period of Cretan isolationism nobody has ever actually been allowed to thoroughly explore and document the civilization of the island after it came under the rule of the Queen
Well, I think either Aki or Latooni mentions this, but you do have some decent-ish records of their time while they ruled Crete. It’s what the King did after leaving Crete that keeps people stumped.
Cretans do keep the King and Queen a bit close though. I don’t know if you noticed, but that shield on the Ramblings article was actually the Monarchs’ CoA.
You may have also noted that Berlin was under a storm.
The motto of Crete’s army is The Dragon’s Own, while its navy uses The Storm’s Chosen.
I think I’ve also mentioned before that the Monarchs’ Castle is a bit of a tourist attraction, I think?
In general though, it’s been a long, long time since the Monarchs were in public. The Cretans do remember them (and are taught about them in school, of course), but they’re seen more as mythological figures than anything else. It’s part of why the King is surprised that Minas is trying to protect the Queen’s Tomb so fiercely (or, well, protect the continent from what will happen to it if they touch it, I guess).
The rest of the world doesn’t have that much reason to remember them (go to Brazil and ask about the ‘Sun King’ for example. See how many know who you mean), and the fact that they were powered state leaders means that most countries had a vetted interest in not giving them that much fanfare. It’s why the Byzantines welcomed the Dógis, who took over ruling Crete. Far more attractive to deal with what everyone knows is a normal human.
Tbf, probably the same reason there’s no statues of Basil II, or Socrates, or any of the great rulers in Greece proper.
They are on some coins, though it’s been long enough that they are probably a bit ‘smudged’. The King took basically every painting of the two of them (in the Palace) when he left Crete, though. And even the few he left are from a kind of artstyle too rare for us today to really make inferences about their appearance.
… I am not telling you what they looked like, by the way. The only thing I’m going to mention is that they could very well be considered opposites.
This is also part of it.
The Monarchs’ Palace is a tourist attraction, but many of its rooms are forbidden to tourists. No one is allowed up on the Tomb, for obvious reasons. Most of the ‘archeological’ work allowed is more on the Minoans than the King and Queen.
I do want to point out the BQ as a Roman was pretty lame. “Conquer or perish” was a proud Roman tradition. She disgraced her Roman ancestors for not conquering the world when she had the ability to.
“What gives you the right to conquer the world?”
“Because I can.”
And also for being anti-slavery, not prompting about eleventy billion civil wars, and not making her horse a senator. Though, to be fair, I’ve seen some of those senators, a horse would be a marked improvement in both policy and looks.
At least that way, you can see the shit coming out of their asses instead of the mouths of the senators. Much more preferable that way for me.
Slavery was the norm for millennia and then it died out in the 19th century. Says a lot about humanity that since nearly the start of our species the concept of owning a human being was acceptable. It’s something to remember about the Blitz Queen though, whereas the Broken King has presumably interacted with modern humanity and might choose to adopt more modern mentalities towards certain things.
The Blitz Queen died out when wholesale extermination of cities and cultures was still a practical norm. For all we know, the first thing she does is fly right to Turkey and levels 1/3 of it out of rage and grief that they destroyed her homeland.
She might have hated aspects of it due to the landlords and aristocracy but she was dead before the Turks were even a thing.
I’m sure the Queen will be fine with Constantin- err, Istanbul no longer being Roman.
I mean, maybe she’d be pissed if she returned in the middle of Crete being at war and she was informed that the Stenon was being blocked to cause a famine in Crete, but, you know.
That’s never going to be the case, is it?
Truly the lowest anyone could fall to; that got me thinking if it’s possible (and if it has happened before/already), for an animal to grow powers as well and be a hero or a villain
Super hamster?
Edit: I just realized if animals could get super powers then things like tactical animal deployments could exist. Like throw a rabbit that can self destruct continuously into an enemy trench and watch havoc occur.
After seeing The Boys s3, I’m staying the hell away from super powered hamsters. Don’t fuck with em, man.
