A Mage Reborn, Book Two (WIP) - UPDATED April 5th, 2025 | Book One Released!

I’m not saying she is a complete disgrace, but she made too many mistakes to be “extremely good at it”. Being a spymaster means more than just being stealthy and throwing daggers. Just throwing in my two cents.

let’s say she has the skills but not exactly the mindset needed

Imagine if the Arcadians send mc as a masked diplomat to Param …That would be interesting …They could guilt trip Leon into giving away the former Arcadian territories for free citing his failure in stopping the order of the broken flame n public execution of an innocent Arcadian.

It would also be funny (if your MC sides with Arcadia) seeing Ante’s reaction to a very much alive and even stronger MC who is now a definite threat to her and her king and nation. Now they would really be an enemy haha. If the MC was discreet I wonder who would believe her this time around.

I would like to see her again and have a chance of revenge and let her know she (by her actions) inadvertently made the MC into an actual enemy

I don’t think Leon is going to partition off large chunks of his kingdom to his enemies just because of a guilty conscience.

He can be dumb but…not that dumb

now that’s a pretty tempting idea, if only I didn’t hate Thalia so much…

Then an Earthsworn: Black Sun ought to remind him of the “gravity” of the situation

about the whole they-should-have-conducted-an-investigation-first thing, even if leon decided to conduct an investigation even after mc already admitted to the crime, where would he look first? how would he know where to look? he could ask mc questions, but mc wouldn’t be able to say anything bc of their collar and decoding mireil’s journal would take months

Sister‘s journal

Leon and Ante probably had the idea to look at the scene of what happened first but as others has said, Leon is dumb and Ante isn’t fit to be an spymaster so they wouldn’t have found anything to point them in the right direction. No one else probably could sense the magical traces as well as the MC did. The only way they could had gotten answers was from the Sister’s journal but we all know the cons of it.

*Yep, that’s thrue. The most important thing would be gathering information, but thats not exactly something easy to display, unlike the things we witness her do. *

Ante isn’t fit to be an spymaster

Well, i wouldn’t go that far. She is someone chosen by King Julius (he also was somwhat suspicious of MC) and i don’t think he would pick just some rando from the street. After all he trusted her to find the Prinses after the left for advenruting. Look how MC was tested for a position of a retainer and how competent Ante is when we actually see her. She was obviously qualified for the job and all the problems arise from what we don’t see her do.
Here again comes the time-skipping of the war and ( sorry I just can’t let this one go) Leon telling MC thet Ante was reporting their dubious behavior. Either she was misinterpreting what she saw or she was lying on purpose. If it was developed beyond that throw-away-lane and if there actually were evidence for MC being naughty she could have built a case against them. With enough clues and info gathered during the war Ante could make a considerable file with MC’s name on it that could somewhat substitute for an investigation pre burning. But alas we don’t know what was happening during the war, therefore are missing crutial context.

*Also, all the talk about Ante being incopetent got me thinking, what if she wasn’t and what if she would figure out that MC is Arcadian? Right after the war started she learned of MC explanation, saw their weird magic and put 2 and 2 together. From that point she could start beeing overly suspicious. After all Arcadians are evil demons according to the church and it was her country that destroyed Arcadia and to this day discriminate against its people. A lot of stuff to want revenge for. She could figure out that Sister is Arcadian as well. Once she knows that it goes like a domino. Was all that a part of some wicked plan? Is Arcadia coming back? Will there be an uprising, or a revolt? Will MC use their connection to the King to get land for their country or try to assassinate him when he stops beeing usefull? And most important of all how will she convince the King that the MC is an enemy? *
If we add that that Ante herself is prejudiced against Arcadians she could start fabricating evidence against MC. After all if she just reviled the truth there is no telling what that dirty Arcadian might do, how many of her people could die, and if she assassinate them with no proof the King will be mad. So she plots and lies and manipulates facts to serve her narrative. If could even do it for patriotic reasons, to eliminate a threat to her country.
Thats farfetched to hell and back, I know. Damn, I think wayyy too much about this book

People say that ante is incompetent but what’s the evidence of that. Your a suspicious person, no matter what you do there’s something else to make you even more suspicious. Your a mysterious person with no history who can take the strongest swordsmen in a duel for 20 mins with just normal magic. Your related to the person who killed the last king by your own words who by the way knew what she was doing and did nothing to stop it. You have a strange and powerful magic who can stop armies. What if this whole war is just a pissing match between you and sister and after you use the country’s army to take down sister and then take Leon out when it’s convenient. The fact that Leon WASN’T suspicious of you until you killed the saintess was negligible and a character flaw on his part.

No matter your actions you have every reason to be suspicious and at the end you proved ante 100% percent when you killed her men and the saintess. I’m sure she did but honestly why the hell would even bother trying to investigate anything when at the time she was completely right

The author said on tumblr that Ante is actually very new to her job and that her mentor died in the war. Because she was vice commander at the start. Anyway, the errors on her part were described by the author as ‘amateurish paranoia’

How did Ante manage to get the job if she has no experience at all? Surely there was other spies that had far more experience and could had been more suited for the spymaster role?

I’m guessing the War made sure that those others spies wouldn’t be there for the promotion. I’m also inclined to believe that Ante is pretty competent despite her not having a lot of experience due to how prepared she was during out first meeting with her.

So true

She was already the second in command of the spy’s from what I’ve gathered so it’s not that far leap of putting her in charge especially in war time.

How did Ante become second in command if she has no experience at all

I means she wasn’t really inexperience, As a spymaster sure, but as a spy its at least 5 years if not double the amount
