A Light Among the Stars (space opera)

Perhaps, a MC with a degree in ancient literature could hang out in the Rec Room, and humorously attempt to get the others to read more.

Thanks! Fixedā€¦ forgot Iā€™d changed that variable from a temp to a permanent one today for something in chapter two and didnā€™t upload the new startup file.

Got an error when I choose to not sleep in the nude and now all my saves are Error: Bad Slot

Forgot to uncomment the line that allows the save slots when I uploaded the replacement just a few minutes ago.

Iā€™m thinking your error was caused by me uploading the file.

Also is it possible to date Harper in a monogamous relationship or do they only do three way relationships.

Yes, while Harperā€™s cultural background makes them have a lower threshold for considering a triad, a monogamous relationship isnā€™t impossible.

Should be fixed now. Thanks!

In adding the hobby system in, I have run into a question for folks in general:

Iā€™m having a debate on fourth-wall breaking.

The hobbies need a little ā€œextraā€ explanation because one of the sticking points I had with my hobby system was resolved by the curiosity rabbit hole @kckolbe sent me down by suggesting that age should effect stats.

For example:
A 30 year old MC has a university degree. They get a set number of bonus hobbies for the degree and for their age. On the gameplay screen, theyā€™ll get just the option to choose the appropriate number of hobbies. At minimum, itā€™ll boost those stats initially using an age-based algorithm, and then later other small boosts if they choose to spend passive or active free time on the hobby.

Is that something important to know when choosing hobbies? Or would the categories theyā€™re in be enough information? Categories being Academics, Athletics, Charisma and then a combination of those when the hobby is a crossover (for example Robotics would be Academic/Athletics, since athletics is a catchall stat for anything requiring physical skill).

I think it depends on how many variables you want to test against and include. For example, if I decide my character played some basketball when he was younger, that specific hobby would be useless unless a game of basketball is included down the road. If itā€™s not, a small bonus to athletics would make more sense.

If anything, I might come up with a small list of academic fields for hobbies instead, since there seems to be a lot more room for variety, and distinguishing between humanities and science could be important.

That is actually the easy part - academics and charisma both - because the majority of hobbies for those sort of stats really are compatible with the ā€œstuck in a limited spaceā€ scenario (I actually have 16 academics fields on the current list, just for a ā€œresearchā€ hobby). Athletics gets iffy, because there are a lot of hobbies beyond working out that require specialized equipment and/or locations, and I didnā€™t want people feeling frustrated at a dead end hobby.

So I spent some time trawling through both my old tabletop RPG stuff (mostly Traveller, Eclipse Phase, etc) and the reams of info we got dumped on us when my middle kiddo was trying to enlist in the Navy and probably have a good enough list to not shortchange athletic hobbies.

Basketball, ironically, is one that would work, since the ship has a ā€œbelowdecksā€ cargo area that hasnā€™t been toured yet. An empty or underused cargo area could be used for a small game of basketball. And by weird, weird happenstance, I got to look through brochures for a swim-spa yesterday that would work for swimming practice even on ship. Originally, the ship was smaller - and some of the tour in chapter one still reflects my mindset there. But the 12 crew essentially live on this ship for years at a time, so if you have an owner-op like the captain, I could see where theyā€™d invest in a little more rec area for the crew.

Plus thereā€™s the option of adding hobbies to the ROs too.

This is a fascinating project that you have started! I normally avoid sci-fi stories as they feel a little odd for my tastes but I must say that youā€™ve created a really interesting world with ā€˜A Light Among The Starsā€™ I can feel the amount of effort that was put into building this universe and I can do nothing else but say how much I loved it.

Hey Iā€™m new here and I donā€™t know if its allowed. So I ask if you make a beta for this game ?
Sorry my English is not so good hope you can understand the text :relaxed:

There is a link in the first post with the beta test. It is just the prologue and chapter one for now.

To update everyone elseā€¦ chapter two is somewhat finished, but real life decided I needed some downtime. My foster mother - who I consider my real mother despite being mostly grown when she took me under her wing - passed away unexpectedly this month.

Before I could even begin to deal with that loss, I woke up one morning mostly blind in one eye. After a two day hospital stay involving lots of expensive brain scans and the lumbar puncture to beat all lumbar punctures (it took 4 resident neurologists 9 tries to finally get the stick to get the spinal fluid), they diagnosed me with a condition called NA-AION. Itā€™s rare, the only treatment for it is experimental and the neuro-ophthalmologist refuses to believe it works, so right now I am waiting to see just how much my brain can heal and adapt around what is probably a permanent loss of vision in the lower half of my right eye. I saw the only other neuro-ophtha in my entire state that treats adults and she agreed with the ā€œwait and seeā€ approach as well. Was told I had a text book case and the only problem was I was a decade too young with no real risk factors. Fun times.

Unfortunately, it comes with a huge side-helping of light sensitivity, so electronics and fluorescent lights are a bit of a nightmare right now, so Iā€™m trying to be careful and rationing of my use until I can get some modified colored lenses to help. I canā€™t see my specialist until the end of November, so right now Iā€™m making due. I am jotting things down in a comp book as ideas come along, but hopefully will get an update out to yā€™all in December. Maybe sooner if I decide to heck with the medical establishment and just buy myself some non-prescription FL-41 glasses.

Well, Iā€™d say youā€™ve had far too many gut punches than anyone should rightly have to endure. I am deeply sorry for both of your losses, for whatever it is worth from a stranger on the internet. We will all still be here, and interested in what you are creating, whenever that time in the future comes when things are as right as they can be on your end. I wish you the most luck and sympathy I can in navigating both your unexpected grief and your illness. :hugs:

Like Shark i can only say Iā€™m deeply sorry for your losses. Now Iā€™m feeling a bit bad that I asked for Beta :disappointed:. Hope you can see again because I have very bad eyes too. Without my glasses Iā€™m completly uselessā€‹. Anyway Iā€™m sure everyone here understands your situation.

Iā€™m so sorry. Thereā€™s not really anything that can be said that will help, but Iā€™ll be thinking kind thoughts for you. Please prioritize your health and happiness. <3
