A Healing Hand (WIP)

DEMO

Becoming a cleric is a yearslong endeavor you’re on the cusp of achieving when a new friend asks for a favor, making you exchange class for a fight that’s not yours. Unfortunately for you, clerics are sworn to offer a healing hand to those in need.

Hello fellow hellions!

I’ve gotten big for my britches and decided to try my untrained hand at writing an IF. I’m on Day Three™ of working on AHH (I do like that acronym, ngl), so you may want to hold off on playing until the I’ve completed the first arc/questline. Up to you!

I plan on working on this regularly (with a current goal of 1k+ words per day on the backend) and perhaps updating monthly? I guess we’ll find out what’s sustainable together!

CURRENT STATUS:

At present, the story is only a few thousand words long, and the branches (if you can call them that) are young and sparse.

(av path length: about 2,400 words).

uploaded itsy bitsy byte.

PLANS
Ideally, this story would remind players of party-based fantasy games like Pathfinder: Kingmaker or Divinity: Original Sin. There will be a set story and characters (some of whom may become companions based on player choices), and the player will decide how they go about the story. As I am not a team, however tiny, of majorly talented and experienced industry professionals, the story will be limited in scope but I’ll do my best to ensure we’re all having fun (most of the time).

Romance? Not at this time. It would be cool! It’d be cooler if it got smutty! But that’s a long ways away, if ever. It could turn out that you hate all the companions and wouldn’t want to date any of them anyway, so no worries about this just yet.

Friendships? Yes! As you’ll be adventuring with a party, you’ll probably want to hang out and spend time with the companions you vibe with the most. If they’re still hanging around at any given point, they’re probably OK with being your friend

FEEDBACK:

In the immediate, there’s not much to review, so there may not be that much to say, and that’s OK! It’s also OK if you hate everything and have a lot to say. I’m sure I’ll find something constructive in whatever you throw at me. I’ll be grateful for your time and energy regardless.

As the story progresses: I’d most like developmental feedback on flow, characters, and quests. Are they paced in a way that seems fun? Is that one NPC a little too sarcastic? Could that quest actually be spread out more? Things like that, mainly.

If you have something to say, I want to hear it!

an ongoing list of questions I have for readers
be aware it will hold spoilers sooner or later

//

QUESTIONS FOR YOU:

How often are you wanting to be notified that text has been changed due to your stats (which are based on your choices ((I hope!))?

Do you feel the shifting text adequately reflects your choices? If not, is there any specific scene that stood out to you as incongruous with the rest of the text (or with the concept of a fun TTRPG session)?

Do you feel your stats are adequately representative of your choices? If not, what would you have liked to see? Any specific scenes where you felt this wasn’t true or it felt extra true?

Do you feel you have a fair range of choices so far? If not, where would you like to have seen what and why?

Congrats on taking the plunge. I like what I’ve read so far. In particular, I like the voice the narration has, it sets a breezy mood.

Minor correction: Aspen is first referred to as “they”, even though MC seems to know her (and that she’s a she).
You turn and find yourself face-to-face with Aspen, who, judging by their lack of breath, seems to be just as late as you. [...] "Well." Aspen sniffs, gesturing for you to follow her to a table.
Obviously, it’s too early to give any sort of high-level critique, but on a purely subjective level, this already feels like a story I want to read.

Did you say healer-centric story? I am here. I am SAT. Going to read this when I get home for real feedback!

There’s not much to give deep feedback on but initial impressions here!

I’m excited to see where this goes, how you end up duped, what kind of abilities MC can have, etc! :eyes:

That segment about Shauna and the bird?? That GOT ME, it was so funny and it did a great job at showcasing her weird brutish strength and apparent lack of empathy lol.

I’m also curious about Aspen and her forgetfulness (or is she new? recently acquainted?)

p.s. It’s only been a few months since I started working on my own IF, so if you have any questions about coding or anything feel free to DM me because I can still acutely feel the pain of asking questions on the forum like “please explain this to me like I’m 5” :joy:.

Not really enough to judge yet but it’s a nice start

Thank you! I’m happy to hear it sparks interest!

And yes, in this story and world, “they” is used as a gender neutral singular or plural regardless of gender identity as it’s a neutral term. For people who don’t ID as any one gender, they’ll likely flip between pronouns they vibe with or use “they/them” full time. How does that sound?

And thanks for reading so closely!! Makes me want to buy you a drink in exchange!

Thank you!! I’m so happy to meet another healer-lover! (Literally. I romanced Tristian in Kingmaker).

I’m currently debating spells, and welcome any creative input you’re willing to share. There are going to be hard limits to what clerics can do, so not all things (like fireballs or seismic toss) will work for their skill tree but it may work for others in the world!

And yes! I’m so happy to hear that’s what you took away from the bird interaction! I’d love to know what condition your shoes are in, and whether you and Shauna did more than talk, if you’re willing to share!

And² you actually only met Aspen yesterday!

And³ I will more than likely be taking you up on that offer, so I apologize in advance for its abuse!

It really is one of my favorite classes to play as across the board (TTRPG, RPG, MMO like hell yeah make people NEED ME). But romancing healers? Top notch! Being chosen over the gods is SO AFFIRMING.

Shauna

Hmm, I chose pretty much the more pacifist options, but I don’t remember shoes ever being mentioned and Shauna only spoke about how I get it and then they suddenly left the room. I’ll go back and double check my choices just in case.

I did cover with a smile > I could win her over. > Just barely hear it. (no shoe mention, however)

But now I feel the need to go back and see if I can my ass kicked by Shauna.

Also I am more than happy to help!
