Writing about gender, power, and privilege

Which is odd given that the latest statistic say that a women is more likely to get raped by a fellow solider then shot by a enemy solider. The army seems to have made little progress in terms of gender equality, but then i know only 1 girl from my entire school life then went on to join the military whilst I know at least 15 guys that did, so it might just be a case of it not being viewed (wrongly) as necessary yet.

According to some statistics I can’t find right now, men who rape other men aren’t necessarily gay themselves.

Based on what I know about the psychology of rape (which isn’t all that much I’ll admit) it doesn’t seem to have all that much to do with sex at all, it’s more about power.

@ZZZ That is what I meant. ^^

@Bikkje Sorry ^^"

@ZZZ It’s okay, I wasn’t that clear about it. :smiley:

Makes sense. You just want domanance.

And from what I can understand. Men are more affected by the rape than women, women are more mentally prepared for the potential of being raped, there are many organisations for female rape victims and they aren’t looked down upon. But male rape victims however, they have to deal with being seen as less of a man, many people don’t even believe men can be raped, and some rape victim organisations won’t help male rape victims.

Very true.

I should imagine that’s ten times worse in the military given the fairly macho man culture.

Off-topic but, how do you write in italics here? I’ve seen people do it.

Not everyone is acting machoman. The Navy is less physical, more logistics. I doubt I will ever be in a physical fight in a war. Save that for the Marines and Army.

Cool.

@ZZZ Thanks! :slight_smile:

@Bikkje I like your picture. El Dorado, right?

Yes but could you really say being in the army doesn’t make you feel tougher than the average man? Every military man I’ve met seems to act like that.

That wasn’t meant to be a insult by the way, there’s nothing wrong with being a macho man.

And your welcome Bikkje :}

@RRR Yes. I really like that film.

@RRR Miguel and Tulio were originally going to be a gay couple in El Dorado. :stuck_out_tongue:

Really? Isnt that a little to intense for a kids film?
@ZZZ I didnt find it offensive. I guess in a way youre right.
