It will sound exploitative but a chance of advancement is already something big for the vast majority of the Labourer caste. Moreover, in lore, if you awaken you can condense your chi into shards so you can technically generate some money.
Additionally, most of our clansmen are suckers who lost their homes, barely survived and somehow avoided being enslaved. At this point, joining some random dude that managed to exterminate a bunch of demonic monsters seems like a rather reasonable idea. I can see them taking their share after they start generating some stable income, though.

I am pleased to announce the new update has arrived.
Originally meant to be “chapter 7b”, this chapter ended up being 200,000+ words even without 3 of the 4 mission companion quests. As such, I have remade chapter7a into chapter 7 and have split this until chapter 8. I expect many bugs, but it was playable 3 times, so it’s worth handing over to people to enjoy for the weekend.
Use a NEW save, as always.
The changelogs for Chapter 8 are below:
Ch8 changelog
-Completed Chapter 8 with 204,000 words.
-Completed the Rabbit and Dragon Trials within ch8, as well as Guiren’s companion quest in ch7.
-Gave the Herbalist background all 4 low-grade battle pill recipes when visiting the alchemist in chapter 3.
-Fixed a bug where you couldn’t craft special material weapons in chapter 6 if your currency was in silver or gold.
-Changed weighted clothing to be an outfit instead of an accessory.
-Changed the discount on combat difficulty to be an increase instead.
–Now instead of having -2 difficulty report that the difficulty 11 check is now difficulty 9, it will instead report that you have +2 battle prowess and passed a difficulty 11 check.
–This is because bigger numbers are better.
-Added a Technique Attack system so certain combat rolls will now mention the attack you use and add your element or style’s rating to your battle prowess.
–This will still have some disconnect with the text, which I may work on later. (Nightmare Mode [For Me])
-Fixed Soul Core recovery, as it wasn’t occurring during the timepass events.
-Changed Big Zhu’s advice so he won’t tell you anything helpful if you declared independence.
-Fixed a bug where you could loop into fighting Kagura forever.
-Fixed Mortal Limits where it wasn’t applying the 75% reduction when you get strong enough.
-Fixed the issue of the Kiihakai/Aoyusumu extra ship not applying.
-Changed Wind style element flavor from “Surging” to “Howling” because I use the word surging in other places all the time. It’s a great word. One of the best.
-All feMCs could wear the kunoichi outfit, fixed to now only be for Kurokonton feMCs.
-Fixed a certain dream joined by a woman, where it triggered every night. Now it should only trigger once.
-Increased passive AP gains from certain Techniques.
–Techniques that added +2 AP when winning a fight now add +5.
–Techniques that added +1 AP when suffering a Wound now add +3 AP.
-Fixed Dragon Fist not working. (Probably)
-Changed the Alchemy refiner system entirely.
-Learning Alchemy 3 now grants a free skill point in one other skill.
-Learning Alchemy 5 now grants a permanent boost to one of your Core Surge ratings.
-Thievery now increases Commerce by 1 per rank.
–Using restorative Pills in combat now requires Thievery 1.
–Casting Handseals during combat now requires Thievery 2.
–Thievery 3 now allows you to change your combat gear during combat.
–Thievery 4 now increases your Commerce rating by 5.
–Thievery 5 now allows you to refine elixirs during combat. (we have fun here)
-Nerfed Shard Cycling to only count up to 7 Handseals and to only work up to the Mortal Limits * 1.75 (1400 AP to start, 3k for JDF)
–Removed the “only work up to the Mortal Limits * 1.75” part when reading these notes months later. Limits are lame. Old me had bad taste.
–For non-Oni and non-Kitsune with the Hungry Spirit Ritual, 8 Handseals will give you the same benefit as they receive with their racial bonus at 7 Handseals.
-Buffed Replenisher Pills to restore 2 Chi Points.
-Herbalist’s Earthly Prowess Pill in chapter 3 now increases AP by 100 to show off the increase from the free Core.
–This 100AP is already allocated to the Core that gets increased, but it will help pass AP checks.
-The Lightbringer Soul Treasure is now a guarantee for those who killed it, though the new Alchemy system is not so cheesable.
–The choice that originally gave the Soul Treasure now gives spare Weak Soul Treasures and alchemy reagents.
-The points from the Archon in Harehama are now given to all choices, though the choice that originally gaves them gives +1.
-The Nanhou Foundry’s rough draft is complete. It will initially offer much of what Harehama offered.
–In addition, it will offer enchanting your weapon with Weak Soul Treasures. (Lore)
–As well as crafting specific items from Soul Treasures, starting with the Lightbringer Soul Treasure. (Craft)
