Totally new game.

The more laws you get to pass, the less personal priority matters. When I passed 3 laws the first session, I was ecstatic. But then I got to the second one and there wasn’t anything I really cared about.
Not a major issue, though. I’ll likely just go with Dole to keep conservatives happy.
Shoot, I don’t know then running through the demo myself the effects seem to kick in as soon as I reach the page where it explains the effects of the law. The only thing I can ask is if you can recreate what led you to that result in more detail if you have the time.
It happened again.
Fifth law, second act of congress, VP Baker obviously, stats page says debt/deficit is out of control despite my passing the law to tax the rich and businesses.
Bipartisan/macromanager/man of the people build.
I suggest giving Dole and Anderson an extra 1 law relating to issues they consider most important (e.g. Anderson could allow you to pass 3 laws in the first Congressional session if you pass a law in either inflation or/and debt & deficit). As for Baker, he could help you pass two laws in one field if you set it as an important issue in the beginning; so if you choose to focus on debt in the beginning screen, you could pass 2 laws there, cutting both military spending & finding more efficient ways to use funds delegated to Great Society welfare programs.
I’ve just recopied the whole second congressional session over. Again theirs really no reason that this should be happening as the effects of the law should basically kick in as soon as you see the “The tax hikes pass into law raising the top earner tax rate from 70% back up to the high 90%…” text. If this doesn’t fix it then it must be some rare race condition that I just have no idea how to fix.
Edit: Should clarify that when I say recopied I mean recopied and reuploaded it to the demo.
Just finished a run. It was a tough decision, but I decided to only attempt 3 laws. In the first session, I lowered the deficit by compromising with both sides. I also granted tax cuts and paid for it by cutting military spending. Surprisingly (but logically), these combined laws also helped the inflation issue, which makes sense due to massive cuts in spending. It was a pleasant surprise to see that work, though, so I didn’t address inflation with any legislation, because I didn’t want to mess with a good thing.
I also increased police funding and required training to prevent abuses. This seems to have been a huge success based on the “Law & Order” summary. I thought about passing a fourth law, but that would have risked increasing the deficit or some other unintended consequence.
As for foreign issues, I got the SALT II treaty passed in “polite but firm” negotiations and agreed to mutually remove missiles. As I was planning on cutting military spending anyways, this seemed a no-brainer. On the Arab War, I got an interim treaty between Israel and Egypt along with a buffer, about as much as I could hope for. On Cyprus, I ignored NATO and got a plan between Turkey, Greece, and Cyprus groups, pretty happy with that. Finally, I asked for a large funding from Congress for full withdrawal from Vietnam and got it.
I’m not sure what benefit there was to having Dole as VP. I figured that since I didn’t want extra laws, Baker was a bad choice. I was already doing a lot to heal from Watergate, so didn’t need Anderson (though he was my first choice before learning the affects), and so I figured that since my plans might anger conservatives, having a conservative VP would ensure them not going against me.
All in all, I am thrilled with this playthrough. Can’t wait to see the legacy.
No pressure, really just bumping this to prevent it closing. Would love to see playthroughs of other folks, see what you prioritized and why.
I took the VP that allows passing all the laws.
Highest priority was economic stuff for me, people need food on the table- job creation, a strong dollar, universal healthcare, prison reform so ex-cons can reintegrate and be taxpayers with jobs.
To summarize a bipartisan man of the people who cooperated with the democratic congress to get the left options done.
That will serve you well if you decide to try and pass the equal rights amendment.
Actually I guess as maybe a way to spark discussion and potentially a flame war. A thought that I had been rolling around in my head is if anyone thought that I should potentially change what the conservative social issue legislation should be. Recent events in my native Texas have brought reproductive rights back into the discourse in a pretty serious way and I’m going to admit to being at best a pretty novice writer and amateur historian when dealing with these topics.
So I guess I’m asking if what peoples thoughts would be should I include something like a trigger warning or an option to remove it from the game entirely or even replace the issue with say something related to school busing. Or should I just do my level best and try to deal with the topic with all due respect and not shy away from an issue as this ultimately will be a political game one way or another. Thoughts?
Edit: I would like to clarify really quickly that I don’t want a flame war please be respectful as I know this can be a contentious topic for obvious reasons.
I think you have an interesting, academically-toned government simulator, and if there is something hot-button that you feel you can’t confidently manage the tone on, then you stand more to lose than to gain.
I feel that I can generally keep my tone rational if somewhat snide on issues I disagree with and I’m willing to try and write about it. I’m more curious if being able to do so would be in poor taste as I am personally unaffected by either the heartbeat bill or the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Try to do it from a neutral standpoint.
Played the demo, I really hope this ends up getting completed and published. Fantastic game, COG really needs more political sim games.
Hey, looking at the type of public policies of this Wip, can I suggest you consult some neoliberal policies like those that Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan took, taking the spectrum of free market and privatization as part of the economic agenda. Still this Wip is great. And my term has had good results, but my popularity has not changed at all, will it change later or is it something that you are still coding?
Finally a good political choicescript, Should definitely be interesting.
He did mention earlier that he hasn’t done popularity yet.
Hello to anyone following this I’ve been pretty dead in terms of updates especially in comparison to where I was when I started and the reason why is a bit of a mix of good news and bad news. The good news is that I’ve received a promotion at my work and have transferred to a team that I’ve been wanting to get to for a while where I can really polish my technical skills. The bad news is I’m a lot busy here then I was on my old team where I would maybe have nothing to do in a day except maybe try my hand at writing interactive fiction. As a result of that my work on this project definitely took a hit and honestly so has my motivation to continue working on it.
All of this is basically a way of saying that this project is from my view functionally dead or at the very least I no longer have any further intention of working on it. I’ve updated the last of the work I did on the laws from the poll but they aren’t actually finished so it won’t be long before you run into a big old TBD. I’ll be reaching out to a moderator on closing this thread and thanks to the people who gave me feedback or any amount of support while I worked on this.
