I think a story with a pre-apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic like TWD flavor would be great.
for me it’s mystery/horror (more sci-fi would be cool too)
Crime stories in the style of Godfather, Goodfellas, Sopranos etc. Is perfect for this medium but no one has made it so far.
Those movies and series deal with the characters’ choices and their consequences all the time, which would fit really well in a Choicescript game
More non Greek Mythology/Folklore (yeah I know I’m not helping much on this count) and commonly seen monsters (like vampires, werewolves, zombies etc.) As much as Greek Mythology is one of my faves, I’d really love to see some of the other stories from around the world getting more love. (I still can’t believe we don’t have anything from Norse Mythology published yet!)
The problem with Norse myth is that you’re basically going to be railroaded into being a punches-fuckers-in-the-face MC, or you can’t get any respect. Even Odin was half-trickster, half-warrior. Greek myth gives you a spectrum of “this person is bangin’”, whether you want to be mighty Hercules or cunning Odysseus.
Fwiw, Choice of the Viking will be released in December this year.
Haven’t seen that one. I’m guessing it’s going to be more viking, less mythology though?
Yeesss, totally get your point. It does depend on how fast and loose you want to play with the source material though. American gods had an interesting take on mythology meets the modern world (including a heavy norse influence.) There’s a webcomic called Loki Lord of Chaos which has done some interesting stuff with Hel, Fenrir and Tyr as well. They’ve definitely mixed some of the backstories and motivations around, but you can always do that if you want to with this sort of thing as long as you justify the changes with a good story that makes sense.
No comment on that I beta tested it, but I’m not sure what CoG’s policy is on discussing games before public release haha. I’ll just link to the demo on Steam and leave it up to you to judge.
Maybe eastern fantasy type of games like the cultivation novels/xianxia etc, I’ve seen a new wip like that recently but no other ones.
Half-trickster half-warrior describes Odysseus pretty well, imo, because he was also pretty damn mighty. He hangs with the Greek warrior elite on his own merits as a fighter, not just because he’s the smart one. Hell, it’s a big plot point that nobody courting his wife was even able to string his bow.
Sure, but that’s not what Odysseus is remembered for. Greek myth lavishes praise on an incredible variety of character archetypes (e.g., the only dude who was ever able to legitimately retrieve a soul from the underworld did it via singing. Well, he ALMOST did it, anyway, but that wasn’t his fault), but Norse myth is basically “better be a kickass fighter or I hope you enjoy Hel”.
It’s true that Greek myths do have a lot more non-warrior heroes, but I also think it’s worth pointing out that there’s plenty of room for an Odysseus figure in a viking story. If I used the sentence “a seafaring warrior-king, respected for his cunning as much as his battle prowess” to describe a viking character, nobody would blink at it.
I think you’ll have a lot of fun with Choice of the Viking. You’ll want to check out Teahouse too - it draws a lot on Chinese mythology.
Story about various sport, writing books or comics, arts like drawing or musics, and foodmaking competition is lacking here.
But tbh, i won’t read those genre because its oftenly end up not that interesting. Unless masterpiece works.
those genre less popular both here or regular books. But those genere actually popular ini mangas and animes.big its depends on how do you present it
Off the top of my head, there’s at least three sports WIPs: tennis, basketball, and cheerleading.
Not enough horror?!? That’s funny because under the “tropes you can’t stand” thread, I almost put down vampires, werewolves, and demons because horror feels overrepresented, if anything.
For me, I’m tempted to say historicals but there are quite a few that are but with some kind of fantastical twist.
I think that I’ll say spy/espionage. There are a few of those too but the genre lends itself to the format very well. I think It’s Killing Time was one of the earlier choicescript games that I played and enjoyed. Diamant Rose was a few years ago now. I know there’s a couple of others and more adjacent ones like Breach, and they tend to be pretty good. I’d love to see more, whether straight up Bond, more slow burn LeCarre, and even a richer character study like a Graham Greene work. The Third Man would have made an excellent game.
These things are not the same. For example, Wayhaven has vampires, but it isn’t horror by any stretch of the imagination.
Horror is stuff like Midnight Saga, The Fog Knows Your Name (I heard the author was working on another project now, anybody got any info on it?), or Prosperity Station, which hasn’t been updated in forrreeeeeevvvvvveeeeeerrrrrrrr.
Funnily enough, I sometimes daydream about writing a horror game at some point in the future based loosely on the Kult: Divinity Lost game I run. Three separate characters you control with three separate stories that all intersect at certain points. Granted, I’d have to absolutely put it in the adult category and tone it down some even then, but still, I think it would be quite interesting.
For me its horror, it’s underrepresented. I really like the creepy vibe and the feeling that something is seriously off about the environment and character’s behavior. Am a fan of subtle horror that creeps up your spine and gives you chills. Like the gray painter and fog knows your name or highlands deep water, the stories were just right to give one a sense of unease.
For me it is most certainly mecha stuff. Mecha Ace was one of the best early games and Ironheart was pretty okay, if a bit lacking in the feeling of piloting a multi-ton machine of death. Whatever happened to that mech arena one, Surge Academy, or something like that?
