i sincerly hope you would re-write that scene, barbra walking in and saying this is a mourning beard so leave it alone, that would be a little gross
Women had some interesting roles back then and though being in the mafia was not possible, they could attain quite a bit of influence, run rackets, run gangs, etc.
Back in the 40s, my aunt did all of the above and did not do so through a man. She just was a strong, no-nonsense woman with business savvy and knew how to network. The mob is as much about earning $ as keeping it male dominant.
In terms of game mechanics, instead of jobs finding the protagonist, she may have to overhear of a job and take it. Men may not initially think she can do it.
I think the game would be powerful as a re-written female protagonist, not just a Broadsides flip.
@Vendetta Pronoun flipping didn’t work all that well for Choice of Zombies where all your companions had their pronouns flipped to match yours and never quite felt like real people, and it’s pretty obvious that Choice of Romance/Intrigue was initially written for a female protagonist because there are a handful of immersion-breaking moments when male protagonists are made to feel small or effeminate.
Treating men and women as if they are exactly the same makes for androgynous characters, and that can come across as both restrictive and bland. The gender-flipped companions in Choice of Zombies came across as caricatures, not people, so I never got attached to any of them. If you’re going to go the pronoun-flipping route, you’d no doubt also have to do a a lot of the following as well if you want to keep the game’s personality intact:
*if (male)
*gosub mourning_beard
where male is a boolean that is true if the protagonist is male, and false if the protagonist is female. This way the more clearly male-flavored text and choices, like deciding to keep a mourning beard, wouldn’t be seen by female protagonists. Similarly, Choice of Romance/Intrigue would have been a more enjoyable game had they done something like that to keep the female-flavored text from being seen by male protagonists. This is a bit more work than just flipping pronouns, particularly for a game as far along as Vendetta, but it’s necessary I think to maintain the quality of the role-playing experience, and it would still be less work than creating entirely separate paths for a female protagonist.
If you’re seriously motivated to tackle writing distinct female paths that maintain the game’s realism than don’t take my words as discouragement. If you do choose to go that route I’ll definitely play them out, which I wouldn’t bother to do if they were just gender-flipped versions of the male paths. I’m simply cognizant of the serious amount of additional work that would be involved, especially for a game as richly detailed as this one. So I’m not going to push hard for it.
@Vendetta
Why not write “Rise of a Gangster” first (chapters 1-5) for the male protagonist and then write different version of the game for a female protagonist before moving on to “Rise of a Mob Boss”.
Also, @P_Tigras makes an interesting point but it depends which direction the player wants to go in, obviously Ginelli and any other established mobs are out without hiding your gender (however you could prove your worth “Angel” style) but I think you could easily be a lone wolf or run Dino’s gang or Chuck’s(the family connections would help there) as a strong female protagonist like @JimD said.
i was watching the hisory channel a couple months ago and though the name escapes me there where woman bootleging bosses
This reminds me that the game still definitely needs a crazy badass gun toting female gang member.
@JimD There is always a certain slice of the male populace that is highly attracted to the idea of serving a powerful woman (just as the opposite is also true), even in a patriarchal society. Any woman who tries to independently build her own illegal organization in which she’s surrounded by men who live, eat, and breathe physical violence would need a very good eye for picking out such men, making them her lieutenants, and using them against other men who desire to take away the power that she’s gained. Or if she is in a non-violent, but still illegal business, she’d need the patronage of even more powerful men who consider it good business to keep her in place, so that the local two-bit hoods don’t try to muscle her out and take over her piece of the pie. In both cases successful networking would be vitally important.
@Vendetta I was just wondering, was this your idea to do? Or were you asked to do it by certain people? Because i dont really see how you can do this without taking away from the great game you have… Then again, if anyone can, it’d be you (;
@Shoelip
Remember that Angel’s coming back in Chapter 3
Is there a full version out? I love the game and want to go farther than being shot at from behind a veggie stand. [-O<
@AustinPercey no that is as far as you can go but he is working on chapter 5 i think. and he is talking to CoG about specifics like release date and stuff.
No offense meant but I think it’s not such a good idea to start a female career until the male one is done. I believe this will require way more work than it may seem at first and most of us don’t care that much about the gender,we just love the game and want more of it
@TheKing Thanks for the info
I agree with @greygrey gender doesn’t bother me as much as the quality of the game and I think that the female storyline will require a rewrite of several major parts of the game at the very least, though I think that a “completely” knew storyline would certainly ensure that the best quality is delivered and allow for even more replayability than is already in the game(which boggles the mind even to think about)
@Ajax Ok, I meant a badass gun toting woman. Not a girl.
@Shoelip
Fair enough, maybe if the game lasts for a few years you’ll finally get your wish :-bd
@Ajax As she is right now, Angel’s more of a female punk. Hardly a badass. I mean you had to rescue her from being that shit head’s slave. While I couldn’t possibly find fault with that, it’s not what I’m talking about when I ask for a badass character. Maybe she could become that kind of badass, but the fact that you’d be the one ‘raising’ to be that way would make it rather creepy. The whole relationship with her is really kind of creepy actually.
she didnt actully need you to save her if you choose to get her out before killing him she kills you on accident, she was just waiting to ambush the douche bag so its safe to say if you dont show up she probably succeeds in killing him and if you save her and take over the protection racket she wants to personally blow up the butcher shop. i think because she is entirlly willing to kill and if vendetta writes it to be as authentic instead of moving the story around so you can play the same story as either gender maybe she could be an assassin or hit(wo)man athenticly i dont think the enemy would have been on gaurd around a young women back then
and maybe not badass but she is definatly pychotic you dont train her to be homicidal she is like that since before you even meet her
Angel isn’t psychotic. She hasn’t lost contact with reality. She isn’t delusional. She’s just being protective of the man who rescued her from hell when she blows up that butcher shop.
