Just a quick update, apologies that the New Order chapter still isn’t out, parts of it are written but in the last couple of weeks a number of important real life things came up that had to take priority. By way of a teaser, the chapter will have the player attending army manoeuvres, having an audience with Prince Georg, mobilising unemployed youths and of course the budget debate.
lots of peoples seem to think communism require a strong leader with a centralised state, no private property and that democracy wouldnt work but didnt you guys know that communism is probably the most maleable ideology on earth? In my opinion true communism work as a federation of communes managed by a local council of citizen working in union with a central government of elected officials. In place the only difference between this system and a regular democratic federation is that workers rights and equality took the place of corporate priviledge, the natural ressources have been taken away from the corporations and syndicates actualy decide how the industry is run on a local level. Heck the elected chairman and vice-chairman wouldnt even hold more power than president and vice president because thats exactly the role they fill. Not all communists follow the flawed russian model. Some of us even support an even more decentralised confederation of communes where the chairman hold praticaly no power and everything is left to the communes to decide. Thats all pretty anti-stalinist to me.
You guys should really look up the history of communism and syndicalism in general because it vary wildly from place to place.
Interesting, I have a few questions regarding this society and was hoping you could answer them, if you don’t mind of course.
In this society you describe what would be the people’s incentive to work hard, other than patriotism? Does everyone get paid equally? because if so, why would you study to become a doctor if you get paid just as much as someone who works at the docks?
Do people even get paid at all?
Wouldn’t the total GDP of the state be lower in comparison to neighbouring capitalist countries because they don’t produce as much, because they focus on workers rights instead of profits? Would 5 year plan-like economic goals be inplaced?
Wouldn’t this cause a massive brain drain because people would leave the country to pursue a higher income? What would the emmigration and immigration policies be like?
What about people who don’t agree with this system and protest, what would the government do to these people?
Are people allowed to practise their religion in public?
I’ve never talked to a communist before, and i’m genuinely querious as to what your answers to these questions would be. I’m sorry for the typo’s and grammatical errors i’ve probably made while writing this, English isn’t my native language.
People would work hard because they are the only responsible for the local economy. If they dont it will stagnate and people who want to work and participate will move to another commune where they will be needed. I know that myself and a lot of other people would be happy to know that the only reason our region is prosperous is ourselves. I live in an area held alive by corporations and every year I see it die a little but I cant move because I’m too poor and I lack a complete secondary education. One day we will either be forced to move and live hell because we cant afford it or live on low welfare with no hope to find a job until we die. In that system every commune know what they need, what they can support and what they can give and the national infrastructure would be supported by free trains maintained by the federal government so peoples who are unemployed could find jobs quickly even if its across the country. Once the original disorganisation is over and everyone found their place I actualy think the GDP would rise since a lot less peoples would be on welfare and instead supporting their local economy. People who are on welfare by choice will have reasonable living conditions but they shouldnt expect any luxuries.
The fact that the state put civil rights first might lower the overall income but it just mean that the state look beyond profit. What good is money when your people is starving and everyone is dying of cancer because the factories keep dumping waste in our water? Didnt you ever hear the saying that once everything is gone you wont be able to eat money?
Not everyone is paid the same but the difference between peoples paycheck wouldnt be so huge. I’m fine with doctors and scientists being paid more than me if I dont have to pay for anything that will keep me alive anyway. Athletes and business managers receiving more cash in a year than some nations? Not cool with that. Once those ridiculously high paying jobs are either erased or taken over by state administrators with reasonable pays I’m pretty sure we will be able to afford to give everyone reasonable living conditions. Luxuries are handled as in any free market where it goes by demand so you wont have to pay for your food but you can save up for that brand new hightech computer or this fancy wine you wanted. That way we still have luxuries and reason to accumulate money without having some crappy millionaire kid spend what would have fed thousands of peoples for years on a yacht.
Instead of following a quota the communes would pay a set percentage to the federal government and in exchange this money would fund the various institutions. This mean that the quality of the federal service are directly dependant on the communes and the communes well being and effectiveness are the most important factor to the federal income. A balance is needed to make it effective or else it will either be too disorganised or too centralised.
The state wouldnt intervene in art because true art come from the people but official artists would have a salary depending on their popularity to make sure its not crowded.
Immigration and emmigration would be like every other free nation on this world. Everyone is free to follow their prosperity wherever they want but its a bit quick to assume that every brilliant person on earth are obsessed with money. In fact I’m pretty sure that once those who are actualy obsessed with money are gone we might instead attract those who cant use their brilliant mind because they are either an oppressed group in their home country or someone who didnt want to participate in a corrupt system. You would be surprised by what people can do when given the chance and the ressources.
People have the right to protest but this do not mean that you are allowed to organised armed manifestations calling for genocides. If you do that expect to be treated like any terrorist group. That go for both side of the political spectrum but that only leave stalinists on the left and those are a threat to democracy and peoples safety in general so maybe dont make armed threats asking for segregation and genocide and you will be allowed to manifest.
Communism does not mean separation from religion. The state is secular but its main values should be equality. This mean that religions are all allowed to be followed but they have no say in how the state is run and no violence or forced conversion is allowed on any side including atheists.

While I am not personally a communist and can see the flaws with a system which is definitely utopian and hard to achieve, despite how skillfully @cyanide has made the case, I would take you up on this particular point though…
I think there are many more motivations to do high skilled jobs than simply money. If you ask kids what they whether they want to be a doctor or a dock worker many more would say doctor, and I don’t think they’re entirely motivated by financial gain. Many people go into certain professions, such as medicine, teaching, science etc because they want to do it or are passionate about it. Also, on the point of studying, if, in a communist society, the cost of studying and qualifications is taken away, people would be less inclined to demand financial recompense for having trained for that job. But I think the biggest point is that people don’t only work for money, especially those in high skill jobs. I would argue that people in low skilled ones are actually the people who are only doing it for the cash.
Exactly! The reason why money is so important to poor peoples are the same reasons why food is important to a starved man. If you never had to starve yourself because you couldnt afford anything while looking at your local supermarket pour bleach on the week unsold vegetables and your only actual meals are canned soup and cheap unhealthy pre made food you might never really understand how much money control peoples lives for no reasons other than greed and desperation.
I think communism could’ve worked in some way, shape, or form if it wasn’t giving bad first impressions from the get go.
Despite all the fundamental flaws Lenin and Stalin have made in its implementation, it’s easy to see why peasants would flock to it: they were essentially slaves in all but name, they were constantly being led into conflicts that they want no part in and die for things they don’t necessarily agree with, and even when they overthrew their oppressors their new rulers still wanted to continue sending off to war to die for no reason.

The way I see it now is that people are so used to seeing the USSR example of communism that they shut themselves out from alternatives. China notably did its own thing later on (though the way I see it nowadays, they’re more like the United States than they realize/care to admit), Yugoslavia was actually pretty stable for much of its communist history under Josep Tito despite nagging economic problems, and Vietnam was more of a nationalist movement than a war of ideology, and they even embraced car companies like Toyota in recent years in order to help out with their workers.
I don’t agree with the above countries’ methods per se, but in a world dominated by capitalist economies, they have to give a little bit of leeway in order to survive.
To be fair with communism, they all had difficulties that capitalist nations never really had. Its hard to expect communist nations not to fall to paranoia and isolation with the persecution they faced. I think communists are those who have been assasinated and attacked by governments the most of any groups.
The first french revolution fell to a soviet like terror despite being a democratic revolution on the sole basis that every other nations wanted their death in a time where all other regimes were monarchists except america. The american revolution on the other hand had access to a big, rich and defendable territory in a time where sea travel was very difficult and they had rather insignificant continental enemies so they didnt have to expect an invasion at all time and developped normally. Any nation forced in isolation will fall to radical nationalism, political abuse and violent tendencies regardless of their ideology. It just happen that all communist regimes had this forced on them. When socialism is allowed to develop peacefully it become a peaceful movement.
Sorta, but thanks. I was referring more to Anarcho-Communism, and the better versions possible. If only Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, and Castro didn’t give it such a bad rep (and the Western media did a fair job in covering them accurately).
I think the big deal with communism is also that its mostly a worker movement you know so its really easy for *ssholes to infiltrate. Stalin was vocal about his hate for communism since 1909 but he still managed to take over and assasinate all the good communists because he came from a worker background and Lenin felt guilty about his own aristocratic origin so he didnt want to look like an elitist and kick stalin out so all we have left is a fascist dictatorship. The methods and ideology encouraged by stalin were all very much fascist but instead of using russian nationalism he created soviet nationalism. The fact that nationalism was a part of that take the movement out of the internationalist part of communism and once you’re there its just national socialism. And we all know what happen with national socialists regimes.
If peoples would instead look at things like the american worker movement instead of the soviet union they would know that true communism is not about destroying religion and the free market but about redistributing the ressources so peoples are not forced to live like hell for a bunch of rich peoples who either inherited their fortune or built it at the expense of others and protecting human life as something sacred.

Might surprise you but look up heart of iron 4 kaisereich mod. Its set in an very detailed alternative universe where germany won ww1 and different strands of socialism took root around the world. Since hitler never created nazism, radical national socialism instead became something called totalist communism. In fact in this universe mussolini is leading the italian totalists.
In this AU France, 1/3 of india, half of italy and the UK fell to communism and developped in their own way under different conditions. All communist nations can follow a different type of communism trough the game and the different types are shown extremely well but pretty much all ideologies are explained extremely well by the team. If you chose the US you can even control almost any ideology during a civil war and you have to manage how the country is re-created once its over and the communists in particular can end up with a bunch of different kind of regime and the radical socialists can take over and install a worker confederation.
A video game mod was not the place I expected to receive a good breakdown and explanation of political ideologies but they did and I dont mind. They worked very hard to be unbiased and represent all political ideologies very well. Only true nazism doesnt exist and I’m fine with that.
