I think any fantasy or science fiction creatures that don’t have the traditional humanoid archetype will often be a trickier sell as an MC or RO, and both Snakes and Spiders do intimidate a lot of people. I like the idea of games that allow for interaction with a greater range of fantasy races than just elf, dwarf, Halfling, orc and goblin.
I also agree in the endless array of modern vampire and werewolf romance stuff that some period set paranormal romance would make a change.
Ooh, I’m adding it to my list to check out. I love racing! And when I was a kid, I wanted to be a racecar driver (Indy, not Nascar… I had a crush on Michael Andretti).
If you like pain, misery, and drama, go play the Infamous demo. MC is a singer. Just be aware that there’s no joy or happiness in it at all, lol (but I think there’s a way for the MC to win the competition at the end, so there’s that for happiness–just not sure how easy it is to get that ending, and figure it’s probably hard as hell).
Cannonfire Concerto’s very good, but thoroughly fantasy which may not be what you’re looking for. I loved The Play’s The Thing too, where you’re a playwright.
I think games about artists aren’t all that common because creativity often isn’t very interesting from the outside, so they need an extra grabby hook (spying/magic in Cannonfire Concerto, the curse and revolution in The Play’s the Thing, the reality show in Infamous). I would find it very hard to write about creativity because it’s like… real life creativity plus fictional creativity, and both have to be good
Yes. While reading all that demo, I had impression that the author favored ROs… certain ROs, and MC is a character she doesn’t even like and she presents them as someone pathetic that others make fun of (or they hate them as if MC had done something horrible like murder, lol) and nobody cares about their songs and performances.
I don’t know if the author plans to give readers the opportunity to build better reputation later in the story… but the demo so far has discouraged me from following.
Twisted Scene is quite promising. There is one RO like Seven (they could start a club xd) but all the others seem fine and the story is about building a career at a very early stage, so the environment doesn’t seem as toxic as it was in Infamous.
I’ve seen a lot no-demo IFs with artist MC on Tumblr but I guess they’re all dead Maybe such stories are more difficult to write than medieval fantasy?
I second this recommendation! I love this WIP so much. The setting is so interesting - playing as a band member in the 80s is a dream, tbh. And, Paul/Paula and Seven may have some similarities, but I actually like Paul. My MC jumped and tackled a random person in a bar just to protect him LOL
I think we don’t have a lot of IF’s about it because it’s hard to describe the creative process in a way that feels like you are playing. I mean, you can write any gibberish in the lyrics part and doesn’t affect the story. If I remember correctly, in Twisted Scene you if “match” how the MC is feeling with the songs they are singing when recording the demo (for example, you MC can sing a nostalgic song pretty well if they are feeling that way) you go better in the recording. I think this is an interesting way of turning creativity into a interactive game.
